Cedar Crest Wins Founders Cup in Exciting Tie-Breaker

Wellington, FL – April 11, 2015 – JPMorgan Chase won the 2015 Senators Cup, defeating Gordon W. Ross-RE/MAX 5-3 in Saturday’s final of The 6th Annual International Gay Polo Tournament at the International Polo Club Palm Beach (IPC). Misha Rodizanko, the high-scorer for JPMorgan Chase, was named MVP.

Earlier in the day Cedar Crest clinched the 2015 Founders Cup in a penalty shootout after a tied match, taking McGladrey 9-8. Chip McKenney, who scored the winning goal, was selected as MVP.

The name of the sport is polo, but if you ask the players, the name of this game was fun. With festive tailgating going in theme-decorated booths fieldside – and the goalposts decked out in rainbow colors – The 6th Annual International Gay Polo Tournament was polo with panache.

“It was a great open game, and the field was fabulous,” said French pro Caroline Anier, who was instrumental in JPMorgan Chase’s win. “The weather was beautiful, the organization was great, and we were having a lot of fun. When you have a victory on top of this, it’s like a bonus.”

Gordon W. Ross-RE/MAX took an early lead, with teammates Gordon Ross and Misha Rodizanko each making a goal to close the first chukker with a one-point lead. JPMorgan Chase didn’t let that stand for long, however. The team surged in the second chukker and never looked back, maintaining a tight lead through the rest of the game.

The hottest action came in the second chukker, with Anier making two goals and teammate Tiffany Busch contributing another. A series of smooth plays by the evenly matched teams began with pro Joey Casey in the driver’s seat. He took the ball downfield full-tilt boogie in what looked like a sure run to goal, but then Anier swooped in.

She was all over the ball until Mason Phelps jumped in and broke up the play. With fine-tuned situational awareness, Phelps kept the ball under his wing just long enough for teammate Misha Rodizanko (the team’s high scorer) to get into position. Phelps passed the ball to him, and things were looking good again for Gordon W. Ross-RE/MAX.

But Anier suddenly resurfaced and rewrote the equation. On an assist from Mark Bennett, she took the ball on a breakaway, her lead increasing exponentially like Secretariat in the home stretch. Three seconds before the warning horn, she scored, ending the first half 4-2 for JPMorgan Chase.

The third chukker brought a bit of déjà vu, as Rodizanko also scored in its final seconds à la Anier. In the final period of the four-chukker match, Busch made her second goal of the day, sealing the deal for JPMorgan Chase, 5-3.

“That was probably the fastest game I’ve ever played!” said a jubilant Mark Bennett, who scored in the first chukker. “Caroline and Tiffany were wonderful. They put us where we needed to be, always calling the shots, giving good direction and great leadership. It was an awesome game. I’m happy to win, and I’m happy for JPMorgan.”

Jed Pearsall attributed the team’s victory to his teammates. “It was all them,” he said with a good-natured laugh. “I just tried to hold my own and not hold anyone back.” He added that Anier and Busch “were coaches on the field, as well as teammates. They coached us through everything, and that made it the way it should be – we were all smiling 100 percent of the time.”

Cedar Crest Takes McGladrey 9-8
Wins Founders Cup in Tiebreaker

“When you’re playing and you see all these wonderful people enjoying themselves on the sidelines, there just aren’t words for it!” said Rafik Boughadoui. “What a fun event – you come happy and you leave happy!”

Boughadoui had yet another reason to be happy: His team won the 2015 Founders Cup in the subsidiary match of the 6th Annual International Gay Polo Tournament at the International Polo Club Palm Beach (IPC). He made a crucial assist on the first goal of the match, which was sent into goal by Jean-Marc Herrouin. Their teammate Sunny Hale followed up with another, ending the first chukker 2-0 for Cedar Crest. McGladrey answered both of those goals in the second, with Dwight Tran and Charlie Muldoon each scoring.

Muldoon, who was McGladrey’s high scorer with three goals in the game, earned the moniker “Ramrod” from announcer Gus Whitelaw. The McGladrey contingent on the sidelines adopted it, cheering, “Go, Ramrod!” every time Muldoon ran with the ball. Muldoon mania caught on like wildfire. From tailgate booths on both sides of the field, champagne glasses could be heard clinking and the chant “Rammmm-rod!” echoing when Muldoon scored.

Meanwhile, the players kept their focus. Halftime ended with a 2-2 tie. Hale scored in the third and fourth chukkers. Muldoon answered with two back-to-back goals in the final period of the four-chukker match, bringing the spectators’ cheering to a crescendo as he tied the game 4-all at the end of regulation play.

A penalty shootout went two rounds. Chip McKenney, a deadeye accurate player who was 100 percent on his penalty shots, broke the tie with the winning goal and was named MVP. The match ended 9-8 for Cedar Crest.

What did McKenney think of the game?

“Exciting, exciting!” were the first words out of his mouth. “It was neck-and-neck all the way. I thought we had it in the fourth chukker, and then in the last 30 seconds they scored a tying goal,” he said.

“I think the shootout was a fun way to end it because every time you make a shot and every time you miss a shot, it just adds to the pressure of getting the next shot. So it really builds the tension. It’s a pretty fun way to end a tied game.”

Teammate Jean-Marc Herrouin, who scored in the first chukker and made both his penalty shots in the shootout, attributed his success to Hale. “It was a real honor to play with Sunny Hale, one of the top women polo players in the world,” he said. “Just spending time on the field with her improved my game tremendously.”

Hale, in her first time playing in the tournament, described it as “a nice, flowing, running game – a good, exciting game.” Noting that her team had played together for the first time just the previous day, she said, “Today it was a lot easier to gel because we’re a little more used to each other.”

Win or lose, said Hale, she had another reason for participating in the 6th Annual International Gay Polo Tournament: “I’m here because I support Chip McKenney’s efforts to promote more fun in polo and having a good time with friends, and that’s exactly what this event was.”

Wellington, FL – April 10, 2015 – Teams for JP Morgan Chase and Gordon W. Ross-RE/MAX will face off in Saturday’s final of The 6th Annual International Gay Polo Tournament at the International Polo Club Palm Beach (IPC).

Both teams won their respective matches Friday at IPC. JP Morgan Chase bested Cedar Crest 7-4, and Gordon W. Ross-RE/MAX defeated McGladrey 6-4.

“I have always wanted to play in this tournament. I’m absolutely thrilled!” said Tiffany Busch after her winning game for JP Morgan Chase. “Everyone has such upbeat, great attitudes out here. This is the kind of polo that I personally love to play. Everybody’s smiling – win, lose, it doesn’t matter. We’re all having a good time and looking at the big picture.”

Mason Phelps, who played on the winning Gordon W. Ross-RE/MAX slate, gave thanks to his teammate Joey Casey, Mike Harris and Palm City Polo Club for “putting it together for me in five weeks.” Phelps, a new participant in the GPL tournament, recently began studying and practicing at Casey’s facility.

Casey, a professional player and coach, said he was “really proud of Mason today in his first tournament – he played amazing and stayed in the flow.”

We gave it a good go, and I’m proud of how we played. We’ll be cheering the other team on tomorrow in the finals.”

Herrouin will be playing alongside Chip McKenney, Gordon Ross and Dwight Tran. Photo by Scott Fisher.

WELLINGTON, FL – October 24, 2014 — The Gay Polo League takes center stage Saturday on the opening day of the fourth annual Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships: Horses & Horsepower at WestWorld of Scottsdale, Ariz.

It marks the first time the Wellington-based GPL has been invited to compete in America’s most attended polo event expected to attract 15,000 polo fans to the Omni Scottsdale Polo Field.

The GPL’s all-star team features Dwight Tran, Gordon Ross, Jean-Marc Herrouin and team captain Chip McKenney, GPL founder and president.

The GPL opens the two-day, premier four-match schedule on Saturday at 1:15 p.m. when the Sophisticated Living Gay Polo League team takes on the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia Arizona Polo Club team of Diego Florez, Bill Clark, Bill Stalcup, Dan Urness, Natalie Grancharov and Andres Camacho.

“I am very excited for the opportunity,” said California-based Herrouin, last year’s Most Valuable Player at the 5th Annual International Gay Polo Tournament in Wellington.

“I am looking forward to playing in front of the Arizona fans and hopeful our team will win. The adrenaline and the build-up is definitely intense at the moment. I am looking forward to channeling all of that into a great performance.”

Herrouin, a seven-year veteran player, was a member of last year’s Senator Cup champion RBC Wealth Management team at the 5th Annual International Gay Polo League Tournament. Herrouin has competed in all five GPL tournaments.

Herrouin is impressed by the Scottsdale tournament which has made great strides over the years to attract more fans to the sport and is looking forward to playing in front of the largest crowd he has seen for a polo game.

“It is a great sign for polo,” Herrouin said. “It just goes to show if the promoters of the event plan ahead and do a good job, then you will get this kind of turnout.

“It is incredible that so many people will be there to watch us. It is by far the largest group of polo spectators I have seen and played in front of.”

The exposure is also expected to generate more interest in the GPL and attract potential players.

“It will be a great opportunity for us to play in front of such a large crowd and have the opportunity to attract new members,” Herrouin said. “Hopefully, we will do a good job.

“We have been playing together for six years. I think it will come together once it is on the field. We have a really good shot of kicking some butt.”

The Gay Polo League, created in 2006, is an international organization and only organized gay polo league in the world.

The two-day Scottsdale event, which is promoting a diversity theme, includes four matches with teams from all the world and will feature some of the world’s top players including Julio Arellano, Sunny Hale and France’s top gay player, Caroline Anier.

Cedar Crest Stables Wins Founders Cup at 5th Annual International GPL Tournament

Chip McKenney Named MVP

WELLINGTON, FL – April 6, 2014 — For the third consecutive year, Cedar Crest Stables captured the Founders Cup Saturday at the 5th Annual International Gay Polo League Tournament at Grand Champions Polo Club.

Cedar Crest Stables (Jed Pearsall, Phil Tremo, Chip McKenney, Miguel Novillo Astrada) defeated Gordon W. Ross Team ReMAX (Mark Bennett, Frank Galdon, Gordon W. Ross, Alejandro Novillo Astrada), 3-2, in round-robin play for the subsidiary title.

The Founders Cup is presented in honor of Chip McKenney, the founder of the GPL.

In the championship final, RBC Wealth Management (Rafik Boughadou, Dan Haynia, Jean-Marc Herrouin, Nic Roldan) won the Senator Cup with a 5-3 victory over Phelps Media Group (Gina Padilla, Ezequiel Ortiz Berne, Talbot Logan, Juan Bollini).

In other round-robin games, Cedar Crest Stables defeated JP Morgan (Brad Henry, Liz Ryan, Jack Hoffman, Joey Casey), 5-2, with McKenney scoring all five of his team’s goals. Henry and Hoffman each scored a goal for JP Morgan.

Gordon W. Ross Team ReMAX defeated JP Morgan, 4-3, behind two goals by Galdon. Bennett and Ross each scored one. Ryan led JP Morgan with two goals and Henry added one.

In the Cedar Crest Stables-Gordon W. Ross Team ReMAX final round robin game, Cedar Crest Stables jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Tremo converted a 30-yard penalty shot that hit the goal post but broke the line for a goal.

Ross scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at 1-1 on a neck shot at the 3:08 mark and at 2:48 on another neck shot for a 2-1 advantage.

After McKenney missed a goal attempt early in the second chukker, he scored his first goal of the game on a back shot at the 6:19 mark to tie the game at 2-2.

Ross came up with an outstanding defensive play when he backed another McKenney goal attempt out of the goal mouth area with four minutes left. A minute later, however, McKenney came back to score his second goal of the game to clinch the win for his team.

McKenney was named Most Valuable Player of the Founders Cup. McKenney scored seven goals in round-robin play and played well defensively.

“I am thrilled,” McKenney said. “Yesterday, I played poorly and today I made a comeback. I just felt like I was on from the minute I got onto the field. I think I just felt confident going onto the field. I was determined to really play better and play well.”

McKenney jelled well with his teammates including Jed Pearsall, making his GPL tournament debut, and pro Miguel Novillo Astrada, a 10-goal rated player in Argentina.

“Everything worked out with the team,” McKenney said. “My team jelled. We had never played together as a team before yesterday so we were kind of missing each other, missing that rhythm and today it all came together.”

Cedar Crest Stables was one of a record five teams competing in the two-day tournament that was live-streamed by PoloNow Network.

“I am thrilled Cedar Crest Stables won again because Cat has been supportive of our event since Day 1 and this is the first time I got to play on her team,” McKenney said. “I am very pleased that we won our division and I got the MVP in her honor. This is a big shout out to her.”

McKenney, founder and Executive Director of the Gay Polo League, was competing in his fifth GPL tournament. He was among six players who have played all five tournaments. The others were Dan Haynia and Jean-Marc Herrouin of RBC Wealth Management, Gordon W. Ross, Jack Hoffman of JP Morgan and Talbot Logan of Phelps Media Group.

WELLINGTON, FL – April 5, 2014 – RBC Wealth Management pulled off a stunning upset to advance into Saturday’s Senator Cup championship final against Phelps Media Group in the 5th Annual International Gay Polo League Tournament at windswept Grand Champions Polo Club.

RBC Wealth Management (Rafik Boughadou, Dan Haynia, Jean-Marc Herrouin, Nic Roldan) knocked off defending champion Gordon W. Ross Team ReMAX, 3-2, in the final round-robin game on Friday to clinch a spot in the final.

Rafik Boughadou, making his GPL tournament debut, scored the winning goal on a penalty shot with less than one minute remaining to clinch the win for RBC Wealth Management.

“It feels great to score the winning goal,” Boughadou said. “It’s just being lucky; I was just there. Our strategy was everyone stayed with their man. I have a great team. This is my first tournament. I am thrilled and very happy to be in the final.

“It’s wonderful to be among great people,” Boughadou said. “Everyone is so encouraging. I was a little bit more nervous at the beginning. What helped me a lot was Jean-Marc telling me yesterday I was going to do great. He knew it was my first time. It’s that encouragement and team work that helped.”

Gordon W. Ross Team ReMAX (Mark Bennett, Frank Galdon, Gordon W. Ross, Alejandro Novillo Astrada) won last year’s Senator’s Cup in a rain-abbreviated 2-1 win over Polo Gear/Palm Beach Rox.

RBC Wealth Management overcame a 2-0 (both goals by Ross) deficit late in the game. Dan Haynia, last year’s Most Improved Player, rallied his team with two goals at the 3:10 mark after a big pass from pro Nic Roldan and at 2:28 after a nice run downfield.

“All I wanted to do was play well and I played well; I did everything I wanted to do,” Haynia said. “Now we’re in the finals. Nic is a great player; he’s a great guy. He gives us input on the field and he helps us.
“I am finally comfortable on the horses,” Haynia continued. “They are very fast and very strong so you just have to go with them. You have conversations with them; sometimes you win and sometimes they win.”

Haynia played for Polo Gear/Palm Beach Rox in last year’s final. “Last year I felt denied; we were in the finals and it got rained out after the first chukker. I scored a nice one in the pouring rain and had a little momentum going and wanted to finish but I didn’t get that chance.”

Phelps Media Group (Gina Padilla, Ezequiel Ortiz Berne, Talbot Logan, Juan Bollini) advanced into the final with an impressive 5-2 victory over JP Morgan (Brad Henry, Liz Ryan, Jack Hoffman, Joey Casey) in the opening game.

Berne and Padilla each scored two goals and Logan added another on a 60-yarder. Phelps Media Group had leads of 3-0 in the third chukker and 4-1 in the fourth chukker.

“I did think we would be playing Gordon,” Logan said. “He had a really strong team and just came off a big 8-goal win in the desert. He has been playing at the top of his game. The final is going to be a close, very open game.

“I am glad to be playing with these guys,” Logan said. “We had a lot of fun today. Poor Jack – he’s got to root for either his husband or for me. Everyone played well today. Just to have a chance to play here with the Ganzis and their horses – it’s just a dream come true. This is the closest I will get to heaven in this lifetime.”

Berne, who lives part-time in Miami, is from Argentina and works in public relations for La Dolfina, the Argentine-based team of Adolfo Cambiaso, the world’s greatest player who has been coaching Berne along with Juan Martin Nero and Pablo MacDonough. Berne has made remarkable progress since his GPL debut last year.

Cedar Crest Stables (Jed Pearsall, Phil Tremo, Chip McKenney, Miguel Novillo Astrada), JP Morgan and Gordon W. Ross Team ReMAX will play a round robin to determine the Founder’s Cup champion. In last year’s game, Cedar Crest Stables defeated Wellington Coalition, 6-5, in the subsidiary game.

In other round robin games, Gordon W. Ross Team ReMAX defeated Cedar Crest Stables, 2-1. Galdon and Ross scored for Team ReMAX and McKenney had his team’s only goal. Cedar Crest and RBC Wealth Management tied, 2-2. Haynia scored two goals and Pearsall and Tremo each scored a goal.

“I am pleased with the competitiveness of this tournament because it really reflects the growth of our players as athletes and as polo players,” said McKenney, founder and present of the GPL. “I am also thrilled we introduced five new members to our teams.

“Today the best teams won,” McKenney said. “I think the game will be a heavily-contested match. I am really happy for Dan. Every year he has gotten better and better. I am happy that it means so much to each player when they play well here. Everybody will go home with a prize tomorrow.”

A record five teams competed on the first day of the two-day tournament, the largest single-day sporting event hosted in the history of Grand Champions Polo Club.

Boughadou was one of five new players making their tournament debut. The others were Liz Ryan of Delray Beach, Brad Henry of Lake Worth, Jed Pearsall of Newport, and Frank Galdon, a late addition to the Gordon W. Ross Team ReMAX lineup for injured player Dwight Tran. All played well.

For the second day in a row, the GPL tournament will be live-streamed worldwide by Florida-based PoloNow Network, innovators of the instant replay, team challenges and reviews at Grand Champions, the first polo club to use it in the world.

Haynia and Ross are among six players who are making their fifth consecutive GPL appearance. The others are Jack Hoffman, Jean-Marc Herrouin, Talbot Logan and Chip McKenney, founder and Executive Director of the Gay Polo League.

A sellout crowd is expected to attend Saturday’s full day of activities attracting fans from all over the world. Since its first year, the GPL has grown from 1,500 to more than 5,000 fans.

Known as polo’s version of Woodstock, the tailgate contests play a big role in the event along with music, food, entertainment, vendor tents and week-long list of social festivities.
