Falsterbo (SWE), 12 July 2012 – The host nation will be feeling the heat as the sixth leg of the FEI Nations Cup 2012 gets underway on home soil in Falsterbo, Sweden tomorrow afternoon.  Drawn second-last to go, Sweden also lies seventh of the eight competing nations on the series leaderboard, sharing the same score as the bottom-placed Irish whose aggregate score has them at a slight disadvantage.  For both sides, tomorrow is a crunch clash as they attempt to pull themselves off the wrong end of the league table with only two further legs of the series remaining after tomorrow’s competition.

And today’s draw was not kind to the Irish who will be first into the ring at 14.30 local time.

The order-of-go is as follows:  1, Ireland; 2, Germany; 3, Great Britain; 4, Switzerland; 5, Netherlands; 6, France; 7, Sweden; 8, Belgium.

HANDSOME LEAD

Germany holds a handsome lead in the series after a double of wins, at Rome (ITA) in May and Rotterdam (NED) in June, and consistently good placings including runner-up spot in Aachen (GER) last week where the French came out on top.

Germany Extends Series Lead with Great Olympic Send-Off at Aachen

Lausanne (SUI), 7 July 2012 – Germany scored a morale-boosting win in the fourth leg of the FEI Nations Cup Eventing, held on their home ground at Aachen (GER) and their final selection trial before the London Olympic Games.

The Germans, who also won last month in Strzegom (POL), have now opened up a 20-point lead in the FEI Nations Cup Eventing over the Dutch, with two events to run in this new series. Great Britain, the runners-up in Aachen, are in fourth place but on the same points tally as third-placed France.

Australian Christopher Burton took the individual honours on Under Discussion, but he had elected to ride Haruzac (10th) for the team and the Australian effort disintegrated when Sam Griffiths was eliminated across country on Real Dancer and Clayton Fredericks withdrew Bendigo after Dressage and Jumping.

The defending Olympic champions had left nothing to chance in the team contest, fielding European team gold and individual silver medallists Sandra Auffarth (GER) and Opgun Louvo, who finished fourth, plus reigning world and European champion Michael Jung (GER) on his recent Luhmühlen winner Leopin, eighth, Dirk Schrade (GER) on Hop And Skip, seventh, and Ingrid Klimke (GER) with her 2008 Olympic gold medallist Butts Abraxxas, 18th.

Fabulous French Fly to Victory in Aachen

Aachen (GER), 5 July 2012 – In a super-tough clash that tested character to the limit, it was the French who came out on top at the fifth leg of the FEI Nations Cup 2012 series at Aachen, Germany tonight.

Henk Nooren’s team displayed grit and determination as they pipped the much-fancied host country whose deep pool of riding talent has been somewhat diminished in recent days.  An extraordinarily poor performance from the anchor partnership of Marco Kutscher and the stallion Cornet Obolensky has left even more questions hanging in the air ahead of Germany’s final Olympic selection next Sunday night.

The Irish battled hard to finish a creditable third ahead of Switzerland in fourth and Great Britain in fifth, while the 2011 winners from The Netherlands had to settle for sixth this time around.  The Swedish team was reduced to just three after a fall for Peder Fredricson and H&M Arctic Aurora Borealis in the first round, and they slotted into seventh ahead of the Belgians whose big score of 40 faults saw them tail the rest of the field.

Sweden to Show the Way at Aachen

Aachen (GER), 4 July 2012 – The Swedish team will be pathfinders around Frank Rothenberger’s daunting course as the fifth leg of the FEI Nations Cup 2012 gets underway at the prestigious Soers Arena in Aachen, Germany tomorrow night.

The draw took place this afternoon, and the order-of-go is as follows:  1, Sweden; 2, Switzerland; 3, Germany; 4, France; 5, Belgium; 6, Netherlands; 7, Great Britain; 8, Ireland.

With mounting tension ahead of the London Olympic Games which are now only a few short weeks away, some team managers will be fine-tuning their Olympic decision-making over the next few days, so there is little room for error on the part of riders.

And as the 2012 series moves past the halfway stage, the countries lying at the bottom of the league table are acutely aware of the need for improvement.

KEEN

Ireland is lying last, in eighth place, so Chef d’Equipe, Robert Splaine, is keen to register a good result this time out.  “We were quite good here last year, but we could do with a good score at this stage as we haven’t excelled ourselves so far in this year’s series!” he said.

Germans Rule in Rotterdam

Rotterdam (NED), 22 June 2012 – With pre-Olympic tension reaching boiling point, Germany grabbed maximum points in the fourth leg of the FEI Nations Cup 2012 series at Rotterdam, The Netherlands today.  But the eventual winners were pushed all the way to the finish line by the super-cool Swedes who piled on the pressure with four clear performances in the second round.

The French, at last, provided Chef d’Equipe Henk Nooren with an encouraging third-place result, while the Irish slotted into fourth ahead of Switzerland in fifth.  The British were hampered by a difficult day for pathfinder, Tim Stockdale, to take sixth, while the Dutch finished a disappointing seventh ahead of Belgium in eighth place.

It was like a pressure-cooker in the Rotterdam ring, with Olympic selection hanging in the balance for so many of the horses and riders.  And as German team-member, Ludger Beerbaum, pointed out, “It was a really exciting competition because until the last rider went in it wasn’t clear who would be the winner!” Olympic hopes were raised and dashed throughout the afternoon, but for German Chef d’Equipe, Otto Becker, there was simply confirmation that he has a wealth of talent to choose from ahead of London 2012.

Rotterdam (NED), 21 June 2012 – The Swiss team will be first to test the track set by Louis Konickx when the fourth leg of the FEI Nations Cup 2012 gets underway at the Kralingsbos in Rotterdam, The Netherlands tomorrow afternoon.  The Dutch course designer is recognised for his innovation and style, and the eight competing nations can expect a strong challenge as the eight-leg series moves to the halfway stage.

The order-of-go for the competition which begins at 16.00 local time is as follows:

1, Switzerland; 2, The Netherlands; 3, France; 4, Great Britain; 5, Germany; 6, Belgium; 7, Sweden; 8, Ireland.

The British hold the record for most wins in the Dutch Nations Cup – 14 in total since it was first held in 1948.  But the Germans are close behind, with 13 victories including their latest success in 2011, and they could well draw level with the British tomorrow afternoon.

Auffarth Takes Control for Germany in Strzegom

Left to right: Hans Melzer, Chef d’Equipe for the German Eventing Team with Frank Ostholt, Sandra Auffarth, Andreas Dibowski and Elmar Lesch being presented with their trophy by the Mayor of Strzegom Zbigniew Suchyta.

Lausanne (SUI), 5 June 2012 – Germany is proving the nation to beat this year, after European silver medallist Sandra Auffarth opened the 2012 FEI World Cup Eventing with a convincing victory at Strzegom (POL) at the weekend and led her team to a second win in the FEI Nations Cup Eventing series.

Germany, which won the inaugural competition at Fontainebleau (FRA) in March, now has a commanding lead of 13 points over Spain at the halfway mark in the FEI’s brand new team Eventing series.

Auffarth made her team début in the winning German quartet at last year’s HSBC FEI European Eventing Championships in Luhmühlen (GER), and had won an HSBC Training Bursary for her outstanding performance at the HSBC FEI Classics in Luhmühlen – her first 4* event – only six weeks previously. She stamped her Olympic credentials at the weekend by leading from the start in the CICO3*-W on the 10-year-old chestnut Opgun Louvo and, adding nothing to her excellent Dressage score of 36.7, set an unmatchable target. The 26-year-old was also eighth on Parancs.

Dutch Do It Again at St Gallen

St Gallen (SUI), 1 June 2012 – A nail-biting last-to-go round from Gerco Schroder and Eurocommerce New Orleans clinched victory for The Netherlands at the FEI Nations Cup in St Gallen, Switzerland today.

Germany came into this third leg of the 2012 series as clear favourites following their emphatic success in Rome (ITA) last Friday.  But, just as it did 12 months ago, the Swiss venue provided a classic example of what makes the sport of Nations Cup Jumping so appealing – its utter unpredictability.  And in a repeat of last year’s exciting event, it was the Dutch who out on top once again.

The host nation enjoyed another great day when sharing second place with Great Britain, while team Germany finished fourth ahead of Belgium in fifth and Ireland in sixth, France in seventh and Sweden in eighth place.

Eleven Nations Line Up for Eventing “Double” in Poland

Lausanne (SUI), 1 June 2012 – A total of 44 starters from 11 nations will be competing in the FEI World Cup Eventing 2012 series at this weekend’s Strzegom Horse Trials (POL), which doubles as the third leg of the FEI Nations Cup Eventing 2012, the FEI’s first team Eventing series.

Some high-profile combinations will be aiming to take an early lead at the first of the four-leg FEI World Cup Eventing series, which this year celebrates its 10th birthday. These include Kenki Sato, who helped secure Japan’s team qualification for Eventing at the London 2012 Olympic Games and will be going all out on Chippieh and Toy Boy.

Six nations will also be taking the opportunity to secure valuable points for the FEI Nations Cup Eventing at Strzegom.

Germany, top of the FEI Nations Cup Eventing leaderboard since the first leg of this exciting trial series in Fontainebleau (FRA), has nominated a strong team in a bid to build on its current five-point lead over France, which has not sent a team to Strzegom.

Irish Get Best of the Draw at St Gallen

St Gallen (SUI), 31 May 2012 – The luck of the Irish may be about to change as they have the advantage of being drawn last to go in tomorrow’s third leg of the FEI Nations Cup 2012 at St Gallen, Switzerland.  Their last-place finish in Rome (ITA) a week ago has plunged them to the bottom of the series leaderboard, but Chef d’Equipe, Robert Splaine, will be hoping to do something about that when tomorrow’s competition gets underway.

The order of go is as follows:  1, The Netherlands; 2, Germany; 3, Switzerland; 4, Belgium; 5, France; 6, Great Britain; 7, Sweden; 8, Ireland.

The team managers will select their sides later today after the warm-up competition.  There is a new format for CSIO St Gallen this year, with the show running over three days instead of four, and of course the centre-piece of tomorrow’s first-day action will be the FEI Nations Cup.  The records show that, since it was first staged in Lucerne in 1927, Germany has won the Swiss Nations Cup more times than any other country – on 20 occasions over the last 85 years.

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS

It is the Dutch, however, who return as defending champions, having won at St Gallen in 2011.  And they will be first into the ring tomorrow, after Rob Ehrens has selected his side from Gert-Jan Bruggink, Jeroen Dubbeldam, Marc Houtzager, Gerco Schroder and Leon Thijssen.  Schroder and Houtzager both competed in Rome (ITA) last Friday where the team finished equal sixth with Great Britain.
