FEI Constitutional Task Force to Identify Optimal Governance Structure

Lausanne (SUI), 13 April 2011 – The FEI Bureau has approved the mandate for a Constitutional Task Force to oversee the establishment of an optimal governance structure for the FEI. The Task Force will present its findings and proposals on restructuring to the 2011 General Assembly in Rio de Janeiro (BRA) in November.

The National Federation-led Task Force will be headed by Akaash Maharaj, Secretary General and CEO of Equine Canada. The four members are César Camargo, President of the Colombian Equestrian Federation; Paul Cargill, President of Equestrian Australia; Kim Gueho, Secretary General of the Mauritian Equestrian Sports Federation and Ulf Helgstrand, President of the Danish Equestrian Federation.

The mandate for the Constitutional Task Force is to seek input from all members of the FEI to drive the effort and dialogue towards an optimal governance structure for the International Federation, with a view to maximising input and buy-in based on the needs of National Federations and stakeholders today and in the future.

The Rolex One to Watch – March 2011

13 April 2011 – The Rolex One to Watch for March 2011 is the American rider, Kirsten Coe. Based in Johnston, South Carolina, USA, the 30-year-old jumped from number 366 to 229 during March – a move up the Rolex Rankings of 137 places.

The Rolex One to Watch is a new initiative which identifies the rider who has made the biggest jump within or into the Top 250 of the Rolex Rankings the previous month.

Kirsten Coe, who grew up on the West Coast, spent much of her childhood in the saddle and her skills were honed from an early age on the Desert Circuit in California.

Coe has had a great start to 2011 and was placed fourth with Vernon G in the Green Cove Springs Welcome CSI in January. During the first week in March, Coe and Tristan teamed up to win the $31,000 HITS Welcome Classic presented by Pfizer Animal Health at Thermal, and the following week, riding Kilkenny Randall Z, she was second in the $200,000 Lamborghini Grand Prix.

FEI Updates Prohibited Substance List for Horses Competing in FEI Disciplines

Lexington, KY – Approved at the FEI General Assembly in Taipei last November, the 2011 FEI Equine Prohibited Substance List for horses competing in FEI classes became effective April 4, 2011.  It is important for all who compete in the FEI disciplines to become familiar with the parameters laid out by the FEI Clean Sport Initiative.

The lists of Controlled and Banned substances are available at www.feicleansport.org. Additionally, the Athlete’s Guide can be found here. The searchable FEI Equine Prohibited Substances Database can be found here. Until June 4, 2011, the 2011 list will show all Prohibited Substances that have been added or removed from the 2010 List and Database.

The FEI has also created applications for the iPhone and other smart phones, designed to show the latest changes to the rules as well as offer updates when any substances are added or removed.

Caroline Roffman Lives Up to FEI Prediction While Competing at International Horse Sport Champions Cup CDI3*

Loxahatchee, FL (April 7, 2011) – When the International Equestrian Federation awarded dressage rider Caroline Roffman with the 2010 FEI Rising Star Award they said Roffman was “one of the brightest hopes of the U.S. Dressage community.” Roffman lived up to their prediction at the International Horse Sport Champions Cup CDI3* at Equestrian Estates in Loxahatchee, riding into the winner’s circle again and again and taking home high scores on several of her horses.

“I could not have imagined a show going much better for my horses than the Champions Cup. All of my horses made good progress from the last show and really showed me they are on track for success in their prospective levels,” Roffman said. “I showed three horses in two classes each and finished first in all six classes with qualifying scores.”

Roffman rode into the winner’s circle on Pie in the FEI Test of Choice class with a score of 69.412 and in the USEF Developing Horse class with a score of 71.618. “Pie did his first two Developing Horse classes and showed me he is very capable of doing this level quite well. He continues to gain confidence inside the show arena and I am excited for his future,” Roffman said.

USEF Names Riders for 2011 Reem Acra FEI World Cup Dressage Final

Lexington, KY – The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) will be represented by three American dressage riders at the 2011 Reem Acra FEI World Cup Dressage Final to be held in Leipzig, Germany, April 27 – May 1.

The United States will be represented by two combinations from the North American League and one from the Western European League. The following horse/rider combinations qualified during World Cup Qualifying Events held throughout the 2010-2011 season:

Blenheim to Host London 2012 Olympic Eventing Team Qualifier

Lausanne (SUI), 7 April 2011 – The FEI has announced that the Fidelity Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials (8-11 September 2011) will be hosting the London 2012 team Eventing qualifier for Africa, Middle East, South East Asia and Oceania (FEI Olympic Groups F and G).

Blenheim, which began in 1990, is firmly established in the Eventing calendar attracting international champions and over 60,000 spectators every year.

The venue is also synonymous with Olympic qualification. In 2003, Blenheim hosted the Asia-Pacific Championships as a qualifier for the 2004 Athens Olympics and a second Olympic qualifier in 2007 for the 2008 Beijing Games.

With Canada, New Zealand, USA, Germany and Belgium teams already through to London 2012 with host nation Great Britain following the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2010 in Kentucky, the likes of Australia, Japan and South Africa will be going all out at Blenheim to clinch Olympic qualification.

The team competition will run as part of the CCI 3* class, with just one nation from Groups F and G earning a qualifying spot for London 2012.

FEI World Cup Eventing 2011 Series Opens at Kihikihi (NZL)

Lausanne (SUI), 6 April 2011 – The FEI World Cup Eventing 2011 series kicks off at Kihikihi in New Zealand tomorrow (7-10 April).

Australia’s Shane Rose, silver medallist at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, and Chris Burton, member of the Australia Eventing team at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2010, have confirmed they will be competing along with the cream of New Zealand-based Eventing riders.

Strong Entries in Principle Inaugural FEI Reining World Final

Malmö, Sweden – The Organizing Committee of the FEI Reining World Final announced today that Entries in Principle for the 2011 event will be the strongest in the sport’s history. With intended participation from 20 nations, the WRF will be held at the renowned equestrian facility of Bökeberg, just outside of Malmö, Sweden, offering several days of FEI Reining classes and the $100,000 FEI World Reining Final on May 21, 2011.

The FEI Reining World Final is a reinvention of the old FEI World Reining Masters. Each National Federation may send athletes to compete on behalf of their country in the annual championship with national pride, prize money and the individual title of World Reining Champion at stake. “Malmö 2011” will represent the first time that the annual individual final has been held outside North America since 2005.

Riders4Helmets Campaign to Be Promoted at IOC International Federations’ Medical Commission Chairpersons Meeting

Lexington, KY – U.S. Equestrian Team Physician and Chair of the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) Medical Council, Craig Ferrell M.D, will be attending the International Olympic Committee International Federations’ Medical Commission Chairpersons Meeting in Monaco April 6, 2011. The meeting is for international sport federation national chairmen, and is sponsored by the IOC.

Dr. Ferrell intends to provide updates during the meeting on the recent United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) helmet rule changes and progress of the riders4helmets campaign in educating equestrians on the benefits of wearing helmets. Dr Ferrell was the co-host of the Riders4Helmets Helmet Safety Symposium held January 8th, 2011 in Wellington, FL. “I think that one of the responsibilities of International Federation medical committees is to advocate for changes that make sports safer. I appreciate the website campaign of riders4helmets in the efforts to promote safety awareness. Wearing a helmet just makes good horse sense,” said Ferrell.

The IOC International Federations’ Medical Commission Chairpersons Meeting is being held in conjunction with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) World Conference On Prevention Of Injury & Illness In Sport (April 7-9th) which will bring together scientists and practitioners to investigate and develop new concepts to enhance safety in sport through a beneficial cooperation.
