Horse Haven ‘Coming Soon’ Pickens Still Seeking BLM Partnership

ELKO – Wild horse activist Madeleine Pickens said her Saving America’s Mustangs organization is applying to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to operate an eco-sanctuary on her land in Elko County.

The BLM is accepting proposals for two types of eco-sanctuaries that would be public-private partnerships with the agency. One of them is for a horse sanctuary on private land only and the other is for a combination of private and public land.

“We just filled them both in and will see what happens,” Pickens said.

The deadline for applications for the private-land eco-sanctuaries is May 14, and the deadline for the public-private combination is May 24, BLM spokesman Tom Gorey said Wednesday from Washington.

He said he doesn’t know yet how many have submitted proposals.

“We’re just in the process of receiving solicitations,” Gorey said. “Certainly, I can say there has been quite a bit of interest. We’ve received at least 20 phone calls. We’re looking for the best proposals for the good of the animals and taxpayers.”

Wild Horse Advocates Ask Obama to Stop the Roundups

New wave of protests begins with San Francisco

San Francisco, CA (April 20, 2011) — The Cloud Foundation and Americans who value wild horses roaming free in the West are gathering on the steps of Grace Cathedral (1110 California Street) at 3:30 p.m. to march to the Masonic Auditorium at 4:00 p.m. where President Obama is speaking during a campaign fundraiser. The Foundation and members of the public ask President Obama to Stop the Roundups and Stop the Cruelty.

“With the country in the throes of budget cut-backs for essentials like education — tax dollars used to unnecessarily remove and warehouse wild horses is wrong,”  states Bay Area resident, Anne Novak, spokesperson for The Cloud Foundation. “We ask the President to stop the roundups now and use that money to help Americans in their time of need.”

“Current government policy is breaking up our public lands for exploitive development and resource extraction — one colossal land grab,” says Lise Stampfli, Bay Area environmentalist and open space advocate. “We want the President to bring true balance and sustainability back onto our public lands as well as into the Wild Horse and Burro Program.”

New Young Adult Novel Features Maryland, Unwanted Horse Challenge

Bowie, MD author tells the story of a young girl motivated to save horses

BOWIE, MD – (Mythic Landing) – A new young adult novel by Valerie Ormond highlights the Maryland equestrian community, military family life, and the plight of unwanted horses. Through the story of Sadie, a 12-year-old horse lover, and her tri-color Pinto, Lucky, Ormond takes readers through a tale of heartbreak, determination and love.

“Believing in Horses,” from J. B. Max Publishing, is Ormond’s debut novel. A career Naval Intelligence Officer, she decided to combine her love of horses and writing with her first book. Ormond and her family live in Maryland, which serves as the backdrop for Sadie’s story. The story begins with Sadie’s move to Bowie and her dad’s deployment to Afghanistan.

Throughout “Believing in Horses,” Ormond draws on first-hand knowledge of Maryland horse rescues. Freedom Hill Horse Rescue in Calvert County and Thoroughbred Placement and Rescue in Prince George’s County worked with Ormond to give the book a realistic feel.

Urge Congress Not to Cut Animal Welfare Budget!

Dear Animal Advocates,
As Congress focuses on reducing spending, we need your help to make sure it doesn’t slash funding for enforcement of vital federal animal-protection laws. While the amounts required to support these laws are quite modest, all programs — whatever their focus — are vulnerable.

Two members of Congress, Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), are asking their colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives to co-sign a letter of support to protect the ongoing funding of important humane laws like the Animal Welfare Act. The letter will soon be submitted to the House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee. It’s an uphill struggle, particularly this year with so much budget tension.

We don’t have much time: Legislators must sign the Smith-Blumenauer letter by Wednesday, April 13.

What You Can Do
Visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center right now to email your representative in the U.S. House and request that he or she sign the Smith-Blumenauer letter.

The Animal Welfare Act, the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act, the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act and the Horse Protection Act are among the most important pillars of animal protection that our nation has, and we must make sure their enforcement is properly funded.

Healthy Horse Tip – Be Proactive against Radioactive Fallout and Environmental Toxicity

We don’t know if we will be physically affected by the after effects of the tsunami that hit Japan.  But let’s face it; the world is talking about radiation.  Radioactive fallout is a buzz phrase these days.  Hopefully, it won’t be something we ever have to worry about but there are steps that can be taken to help protect our horses.  It’s called KAM DTX-Formula, a new product recently created by KAM Animal Services.

Even before the radioactive fallout buzz began, KAM Animal Services was often approached by clients asking if the company could create a product that would protect horses against environmental toxins.  The combination of man-made pollutants, contaminated feeds and water, and natural stress, such as storms or draught, result in their bodies becoming toxic.  So, it’s not just radiation that can create toxicity in horses but so many other environmental situations.

KAM felt there was some merit to those requests and so the staff began research to find the right combination of ingredients to detoxify toxic horses.  As important as that product was, it kept taking a back seat to other projects until now.   Since KAM has been inundated with emails and phone calls recently asking if it has such a product, KAM DTX-Formula became the priority.

The End of Winter: An Update on the Pryors

Dear Friends of Cloud, his family and herd;
Lauryn Wachs and Catherine Stokes, our Cloud Foundation interns, accompanied me on their second journey to the Pryor Mountains. It’s always an adventure and last week was no exception.

According to people who live in the area, this winter has been the worst in 50 years — not only lots of snow but sub zero temperatures for extended periods. It’s a hard fact that winter often selects out the youngest and the oldest in all wild species. This is nature’s way of keeping populations in check and allowing only the fittest to survive and reproduce. So, we really didn’t know who among the wild horses might have died during this stretch of unusually challenging weather. Yet, some things never change and we were thrilled to witness the mating behavior of sandhill cranes on our drive out to the horse range. The male leaped in the air and danced around the female, paying no attention to our car and cameras eavesdropping on his display.

Extremist Horse Slaughter Group Encourages Horse Cruelty in Nevada

March 21, 2011 – Chicago (EWA) – United Horsemen (UH), a 501c3 non-profit organization that promotes horse slaughter, is taking its fight against the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to a new extreme. Not only does this group oppose every piece of legislation that benefits the welfare of horses but tries to garner support with bogus scare tactics.

The latest attack, made under the guise of a property rights issue, is against a proposed ban on “horse tripping” in Nevada. Horse tripping is a deadly and sadistic event which has found its way into the US from third world “Charro” rodeos and involves roping the legs of a running horse. The event commonly causes fatal injuries or permanent lameness to the animal.

“They are misleading the public with false information and trying to scare people into opposing the legislation. This is not an attack on rodeos or a first step to anything. It is a bill designed to end the cruel, dangerous treatment of horses as was the ban on horse soring,” stated Vicki Tobin of the Equine Welfare Alliance (EWA).

In its latest email to its supporters, UH provides a list of invalid talking points that are an insult to the public’s intelligence and a disservice to American rodeos. The group claims that the Charro Rodeo Association voluntary banned horse tripping in 1995 when in fact, they were forced to do so by a 1994 law, AB 49x – a law that was not spearheaded by the HSUS.

Country Music Legend Covers Stones Classic to Help Animal Welfare Institute Protect America’s Horses

March 22, 2011 (Washington, D.C.) – The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) is honored to announce the exclusive release of the Rolling Stones’ classic “Wild Horses” – performed and produced by the legendary Willie Nelson and his family members.  Willie & The Nelson Family are donating the proceeds from the sale of the song to AWI’s campaigns on behalf of wild and domestic horses.  Willie and the entire Nelson family are long-time supporters of AWI and its efforts to end horse slaughter and preserve the right of wild horses to roam free.

“The BLM has been rounding them up at an alarming rate, supposedly for their own good. Sadly, there are more wild horses in holding pens than in the wild. Something is wrong with that, so we must act now before the BLM has managed these magnificent animals into extinction,” said Willie Nelson. “It’s time for the cowboys to stand up for the horses.”

The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act was enacted in 1971 to halt the disappearance of these iconic animals from public lands in the American West.  Since then, however, over 20 million acres of land set aside by Congress for wild horses have been removed from their range, even as the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) — the very agency charged with their protection — claims there is not enough land to support existing herds.  The BLM is unnecessarily removing horses based on spurious claims of damage to range and other adverse impacts.  The BLM’s mismanagement of America’s wild horses is largely designed to benefit a livestock industry that has for decades, exploited western public lands while profiting from massive subsidies funded by taxpayer dollars.  Willie & The Nelson Family and AWI are calling on the BLM and the Obama administration to immediately halt all wild horse round-ups, restore the land provided by law to wild horses and to stop warehousing horses on private lands at even greater expense to the taxpayer.

Wild Horse Lawsuit Update

Our lawsuit against the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) continues! We won’t give up, and you’re invited to attend the next hearing in Sacramento. We want the Judges to know that there is a large contingent of people who really care about protecting wild horses and burros. And we need you to balance out the BLM people who will be in the gallery, silently willing the Court to rule in their favor.

When: March 24, 2011, 2 p.m. (Note: you should check the Court’s website listed below on March 23, or check with IDA, to confirm the hearing hasn’t been postponed, which does happen occasionally.)
