Dressage at Devon and Thorncroft, Therapeutic Horseback Riding, Inc. Celebrate 20 Years

Devon, PA (August 24, 2011) – 2011 marks the 20th anniversary of the selection of Thorncroft Therapeutic Riding Inc. as the beneficiary of Dressage at Devon.  Since 1991, Thorncroft has received more than $1,000,000 from Dressage at Devon.  These funds have been used to support students with disabilities who have shown a dedication to the sport and the horses.

Steven Reed (left) is one such student.  In 2004, when Steven Reed was 8 years old, his mom Linda, wanted to find an activity for her son that would help him grow and reach his goals.  Knowing that Steven was an animal lover, Linda thought riding might appeal to him.  Steven was hooked after just one visit.

For the next several years, Steven took weekly, then twice weekly lessons – first on a pony (Blossom), working his way up to the horses he rides (and jumps!) today.  Steven’s dedication to the sport and the animals continues to grow.  He volunteers in the barn in exchange for one of his lessons, a job he took on at age 13.  Sundays, Steve can often be found cleaning stalls and doing other necessary barn work.

“Thorncroft is an amazing place. From the moment he started riding, Steven has not only learned horsemanship but has made many friends,” said Linda Reed.

Steven received his first scholarship just one year after he began riding.  And, among other honors, this year Steven was the recipient of the Grace Levin Scholarship Award.  His weekly lessons include individual training as well as practice sessions with the Thorncroft Mainstreamers.

Dressage at Devon: From Horse Ballet and Horse Whisperer to Food, Foals, Fancy Hats and More

Devon, PA (August 3, 2011) – Each year as fall approaches, preparation intensifies for the annual International Dressage at Devon Horse Show (www.dressageatdevon.org). The show combines world-class dressage competition and the largest dressage/sport horse breed show outside of Europe with international Fall Festival shops, an array of food and the Ladies’ Day Hat Contest.  Dressage at Devon will take place from September 27 – October 2, 2011 at the Devon Horse Show Grounds, located on US Route 30, in Devon, PA.

The Performance Division, which rounds out the week from September 29 to October 2, offers spectators the opportunity to see top riders from North and South America and Europe.  The horses and riders are judged on their mastery of dressage training and the classes help qualify riders for events like the Olympics, Pan American Games and the World Championships.  One of the crowd pleasers is the Musical Freestyle which is an excellent demonstration of why dressage is often called “horse ballet.”  Riders direct their horses with precise, almost imperceptible aids, including body weight, legs and hands, to move gracefully in time to the music.

Locals will have the opportunity to cheer on breeders from Philadelphia and surrounding areas.  For example, Shilhouette, a filly bred by Maurine (Mo) Swanson from Rolling Stone Farm in Slatington, PA, will compete in the breed show which runs from September 27-29.  Her sire, home-bred Shakespeare RSF, is winner of the 70-day Stallion test in 2009.   Shakespeare RSF is approved for breeding with the American Hanoverian Society and the Oldenburg Horse Breeders Society.  Her mother, Fhlora, is a Hanoverian mare in the studbook of the American Hanoverian Society and the Oldenburg Horse Breeders Society.  Translation: Shilhouette is well bred.  She’s now getting ready to face the international competition at Dressage at Devon by gracing the grounds of a couple of smaller local shows.

For riders (and their horses) new footing has been added to the Gold Ring, matching it to the high standards set last year in the Dixon Oval.

And this year, Dressage with the Experts, a favorite among exhibitors and spectators alike will include commentary from Sara Schmitt, Kem Barbosa, Natalie Lamping, Kathy Connelly, and Johanna Gwinn as well as interviews with dressage professionals.  This list promises to grow between now and the show dates.  This is, of course, in addition to the educational forums that have always been a mainstay of the show.
