Cow Horse Extravaganza Series Wraps Up with Fun Finale

Jupiter, FL – October 30, 2014 – Steed Training’s goal for their Cow Horse Extravaganza series was to put on family friendly events that brought the community out to experience the excitement of reined cow horse competition, and their success was evident at the final event of the season. Spectators, sponsors and supporters gathered on Saturday, Oct. 25, to watch the ranch horse exhibition, listen to live music and enjoy a barbeque dinner.

The exhibition was held alongside a cow horse play day, which drew riders of all experience levels out to Golden L Ranch in Jupiter, Florida, to run through reining patterns and work cows in a laidback environment. Zeus the zebra, who has been trained by Rick Steed, greeted visitors to the ranch as they arrived.

Reverend Marcia MacNeal, a non-denominational minister from the Center for Spiritual Living of the Palm Beaches, was on hand for the Blessing of the Animals. Visitors brought their horses and pets for the touching ceremony.

Erin O’Brien, a former international trick rider, barrel racer and team roper, carried the American flag out for the singing of the national anthem. She was dressed in a beautiful red, white and blue outfit.

“I think this is the greatest family event,” O’Brien said. “I was thrilled to come out and carry Old Glory. There’s so much camaraderie, and it’s so all-American. You don’t get this anymore. Rick Steed and his wife Toni are the most gracious hosts, and Rick has the patience of a saint with children.”

The series finale showed plenty of Halloween spirit, with young riders dressing in costume to perform reining freestyles. Spectators cheered on Batman and the others as they showed off spins and sliding stops.

Rick and Trevor Steed led the way in demonstrating ranch horse competition. Debbie Hall provided commentary, giving the spectators insight into the sport as she explained what the riders’ goals were in each phase and what the judge would be looking for. Hall has been involved with Horse Show by Appointment since the organization began, and she judged several of the summer exhibitions.

“These events have been really great for opening up the Western world to those who aren’t traditionally part of it,” Hall said. “They’re great family events.”

Announcer Bubba Dunn agreed.

“We had a kid today who has only been riding since March, and he did great,” Dunn said. “What makes events are the people, and the people here are wonderful. They enjoy coming out and spending time together.”

Liz Olszewski, Director and Founder of Horses Healing Hearts, was on hand to represent the charitable organization, which helps children in families suffering from substance abuse by connecting them with horses. Olszewski, a dressage rider, also had a chance to try her hand at riding a cowhorse.

“Our goal here today was just to spread the word and get exposure,” Olszewski said. “We have been in existence for five years, and we are serving 49 kids now.”

“From a rider’s perspective, this was so cool,” she added. “I was telling people, ‘Thank God I don’t have money; I’d be buying one of these horses!’ I’ve had it on my bucket list, and to be able to come out and have this experience locally was a real treat.”

Singer and guitarist Tom Blake provided musical entertainment throughout the afternoon, performing classic country tunes as well as original songs. He said he was happy to be part of the event.

“It’s nice to be a part of real Western riding, being a country music singer and loving country music,” Blake said. “It’s great to play in front of my peers. Rick is awesome – I had a polo pony in training with him, and we became friends.”

Andres Sanchez, who competes in HSBA events alongside his two young daughters, generously provided food for the exhibition series.

“My daughters are 7 and 10 and have been riding for about two years now, and my wife helps out with the cow return,” Sanchez said. “The girls love it. There are a lot of children getting involved now, and they’re having a ball.”

Sanchez’ wife, Tracy, said the family friendly atmosphere at every event put on by Steed Training and HSBA is a big draw. She feels that her daughters have learned respect and commitment from their involvement with horses, and she does her best to spread the word and introduce others to Rick Steed’s events.

“This is life for us, but our daughters’ friends know nothing about it,” she said. “So for each show, we try to bring one of their friends along so they can get a taste of it. What’s really great is the excitement of the next generation that’s coming up.”

The Cow Horse Extravaganza series has drawn a great deal of sponsorship support, and Steed Training and HSBA are grateful to all those who have stepped up and contributed to the events.

While the Cow Horse Extravaganza summer series is coming to an end, things are just heating up for Steed Training as they prepare to open an additional facility in Loxahatchee Groves, FL, less than 10 miles from the center of Wellington. Once complete, it will be a top-notch venue for reined cow horse competitors and other Western riders. The new facility, including a state-of-the-art arena complete with lighting, will open in January and allow Steed Training to build on their commitment to bringing Western riding to the Wellington area.

Steed Training’s Cow Horse Extravaganza Showcases Herd Work and Team Sorting

The HSBA Cow Horse Extravaganza featured herd work and team sorting. Photos by Carrie Wirth.

Jupiter, FL – October 3, 2014 – On Saturday, Sept. 27, some of the best cow horses in South Florida converged at Golden L Ranch for another edition of the Cow Horse Extravaganza, produced by Steed Training and Horse Show by Appointment (HSBA). The crowd was treated to a spectacular demonstration of herd work and team sorting, a barbeque and the music of Tom Blake.

Steed Training and HSBA are grateful for the strong support their events have received from sponsors, who have enjoyed getting in on the excitement and supporting the family-friendly exhibitions.

“It’s a fun thing for families on the weekend,” said Joe O’Bannon, a sponsor of the event through his J&R Outfitters and a skilled participant with two mounts in the herd work exhibition. “The more people get into riding, the more they enjoy it. It’s just good clean fun.”

The day kicked off with a reined cow horse play day at 8 a.m., giving riders a chance to practice for competitions in a relaxed setting. Then at 3 p.m., Rev. Marcia L. McLean led the group in a blessing of the animals.

“This is an opportunity to acknowledge them and give thanks for the animals,” said Rev. McLean.  “Also, to pledge to take care of them – to hold up our end of the bargain in the relationship and to do the same for their wild counterparts by protecting the environment. Also, to allow them to teach us and be wonderful models of how to be present, how to listen, how to care no matter what - and not hold back.”

Next, brothers Rick and Trevor Steed of Steed Training wowed the crowd with herd work. In herd work, a small herd stays in the arena. The horse and rider have three opportunities to separate a single cow and drive him across the arena, keeping him away from the herd. The round with each cow ends when the cow turns his back to the rider. A great cow horse anticipates the moves of the cow and has a desire to work with the cow. The riders remain very still and cue their horses with extreme subtlety.

“The herd work itself is actually the stem of all of the cow horses, and it was developed from the old days where someone had to sort a cow out of a herd to doctor them, to part them or sell them,” Rick Steed explained. “A horse that can hold a cow out, pull a cow out and hold it, and not let it back in the herd was very desirable. We’ve turned it into a sport now where the horses are actually really fancy.”

Trevor Steed
Trevor Steed

He noted that the competition reined cow horse of today has an easier life. Because the competition horse doesn’t work all day on the range, they can put their energy into each category of competition. A number of horse and rider combinations of all ages had the opportunity to demonstrate their skills at herd work, with an engaged crowd to cheer them on.

Steed introduced Mike Grier from Palm City, FL, who announced the team sorting exhibition. Grier is a former world champion in team sorting. He explained that in this event, a small herd of numbered cows is led into a round pen. The announcer calls out the number of the first cow to be moved. Paired horse-and-rider teams attempt to remove that cow from the pen. Then, they try to remove as many as possible one by one in numerical order against the clock. One rider remains at the pen opening, and the other rider attempts to separate the cow and cut him out.

Spectators appreciated the opportunity to socialize and kick back while watching demonstrations of these two challenging events. Steed Training’s Cow Horse Extravaganza will return for its series finale, Ranch Horse, on Oct. 25 in Jupiter at Golden L Ranch. The Cow Horse Extravaganza is supported by many generous sponsors whose contributions are key to the events’ success – contact Susan Shelly at (561) 305-1432 to learn about sponsorship opportunities.

In January, Steed Training will open an additional facility in Loxahatchee Groves, FL, less than 10 miles from the center of Wellington. Once complete, it will be a top-notch venue for reined cow horse and other Western disciplines with ample seating for spectators and the capability to host arena polo as well.

Rick Steed Ropes In Crowd at the Cow Horse Extravaganza in Jupiter

Jupiter, Florida – September 3, 2014 – Steed Training and Horse Shows by Appointment kicked off another fabulous event at the Golden L Ranch in Jupiter, Florida last Saturday, August 30. Steed Training introduced the first leg of the Cow Horse Extravaganza Series to Golden L Ranch, allowing western riders of all levels to test their skills at the Open Reined Cowhorse Play Day. Spectators viewed a special presentation of reined cowhorses while exhibitors ran through reining patterns and practiced boxing, a discipline in which riders maneuver their horses to keep a cow at the short end of the arena.

From 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., riders tested their horses in a fun, relaxed environment while receiving individualized training tips from Rick Steed. After a delicious BBQ break, exhibitions from Rick Steed, Trevor Steed and John Ingram wowed the crowd. The Steed brothers showed off their reining patterns and boxing skills, and topped it off by a ride ‘Down the Hairy Fence’, working a cow at top speed down the long side of the arena, but keeping within markers. After a flawless run on High Dollar, Rick dismounted and untacked his horse to perform without a bridle, and then, without a saddle.

The highlight of the family fun event was Rick Steed’s exhibition of boxing a young buffalo. “There probably have been buffalo that have been worked but that’s probably the first one we’ve taken down the fence,” said Steed of his surprise exhibition.

The wild-eyed buffalo was brought out as the grand finale of the Cow Horse Extravaganza. Rick Steed did an exceptional job of working the buffalo, igniting cheers from the crowd.

“A buffalo is probably 30 percent faster and if you give them any advantage, you can’t stay with them,” Steed said. “It is a riot. Cowhorse is the steroid drug and working a buffalo is like steroids on top of steroids. It is as good as it gets.”

Professional polo player and guitarist Tom Blake performed country and rock favorites throughout the day and performed the National Anthem while Miss Palm Beach County Rodeo, Alexandra Ortiz carried the American flag. The event also featured a Blessing of the Animals at 3 p.m. and a raffle to support Omega Equine Rescue.

“I really appreciate the support we’re getting from South Florida,” Steed said. “We are moving to a new facility in Loxahatchee Groves. In January, it should be completed. We’ll be down in the heart of everything for the season. We’ll have cow horse experiences there, as well as cowhorse lessons and horse shows. All three events!”

The Reined Cowhorse segment of the Cow Horse Extravaganza Series was a great success at the Golden L Ranch, their current home base until their new Loxahatchee Groves location – just 10 miles from Wellington – is completed. Once completed, it will be a first-rate venue for reined cow horse and other Western disciplines with ample seating for spectators and the ability to host arena polo as well. The front of the property will be set up to provide a relaxing park environment with a lake view, picnic tables and fire pits.

Steed Training’s Cow Horse Extravaganza continues Sept. 27 with Herd Work & Team Sorting. The series finale, Ranch Horse, is Oct. 25. Both events will be held at Golden L Ranch in Jupiter. The Cow Horse Extravaganza is supported by many generous sponsors whose contributions are key to the success of the events. About Horse Show by Appointment

Horse Show by Appointment’s fresh approach to reined cow horse competition was an unprecedented success in its first season, and now HSBA is back for a second year. HSBA aims to make showing “Fun, Fair, and Affordable” for competitors. To accommodate those traveling long distances to show and help busy riders fit showing in at their convenience, HSBA allows riders to reserve their own ride times in advance. This cuts down on usual travel expenses such as stall rentals and hotels and encourages competitors to make the trip and join in the fun.

Each HSBA series includes four shows. Riders who compete at three out of the four shows earn a place in the annual Championship Finals, which offer over $100,000 in cash and prizes. Competitors may also qualify for the Finals in absentia by simply sending in entries and payment to each of the four shows.

Visit www.showbyappointment.com for information and updates on HSBA shows. Check out HSBA on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ShowByAppointment.
