Caset Named MVP

WELLINGTON, FL – March 24, 2013 — Piaget captured the Butler Handicap for the second consecutive year on Sunday with a thrilling 9-8 victory over ERG at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

Grand Champions Polo Club-based Piaget, led by 10-goalers Sapo Caset and Miguel Astrada, has put together impressive back-to-back wins and will begin this week’s 109th Maserati U.S. Open on Saturday against Lechuza Caracas brimming with confidence.

“Our team went really well today,” said a jubilant Piaget team captain Melissa Ganzi. “There was a natural flow. Sapo, Miguel and Nacho all made crucial plays.

“It was an excellent win for us. They have great players on that team. Our fourth chukker was unbelievable. We’re getting more confidence. We have momentum going and hope to bring that to the U.S. Open.”

After a close first half, Piaget came up big in the fourth chukker behind Caset’s five goals including three on penalty goals, to shut out ERG, 5-0.

Caset was named Most Valuable Player after finishing with a game-high eight goals. Caset’s fourth-chukker horse, 10-year-old Viparita, was named Best Playing Pony and called “amazing” by Caset.

“We changed our attitude,” Caset said. “We wanted to play hard and the horses were doing good. But it was on us. We had to change our attitude, take a man and hit the ball and play the way we do. I think today we did that. In the first two chukkers we played really well, in the third we went down a little and in the fourth I think we killed them.”

Astrada, Caset, 23-year-old Nacho Badiola and Ganzi turned in another outstanding performance playing well as a team while getting more comfortable with its lineup adjustment Piaget coach Joey Casey and player-coach Juan Bollini instituted before its semifinal win against Orchard Hill.

Caset said he was fully recovered from the flu that forced him to miss last Sunday’s stadium game against ERG. With a makeshift lineup of two 5-goalers, Piaget nearly knocked off ERG, losing 7-6. Piaget avenged the loss in style on Sunday.

“We are really, really happy; we wanted to win this to be able to get focused on the Open,” Caset said. “The team played the best so far. We played our best today but I think we can get better and improve.

“With the Open starting this week, it gives us a lot of confidence,” Caset said.

After trailing 5-3 at the half, Piaget dominated the second half and built an 8-5 lead in the fourth chukker with its big 5-0 scoring burst.

“We did very well in the beginning,” said Astrada, who won the battle of the brothers competing against one of his brothers, Eduardo. “Then it happened the same as the other game. In the third chukker we played badly but we were able to come back in the fourth really strong.

“We played organized in the fifth chukker and tried to keep our defense in control,” Astrada said. “Now we have started to know each other and we know what each other is going to do. That’s what makes the team play so well.”

Badiola, making his IPC 26-goal debut this season at age 23, had another confidence-building game playing at his new back position for the second straight game.

Badiola ended up scoring what turned out to be the winning goal in the sixth chukker with 4:43 left to give Piaget a 9-6 lead. ERG scored two quick goals before Piaget’s defense shut them down behind Badiola’s open back shot to stall Tincho Merlos’ scoring attempt in the final minute.

ERG team captain Scott Wood left the game at the start of the fifth chukker and was replaced by 16-year-old Wesley Bryan of Aiken, S.C. It was Bryan’s first 26-goal game.

Last year Piaget, then rated 23 goals with Melissa Ganzi, Alejandro Astrada, Nic Roldan and Rodrigo Andrade, won the Butler Handicap with a 14-10 victory over Las Monjitas. Roldan was named Most Valuable Player after scoring eight goals and Roldan’s gray mare, Dona, was named Best Playing Pony.

In Sunday’s USPA Piaget Gold Cup final, defending champion Valiente defeated Zacara, 13-9. Santi Torres was named MVP and Pelon Stirling’s horse Silk won Best Playing Pony.

Piaget Ready to Defend Title in Sunday’s Butler Handicap Final after Thrilling 11-10 Win over Orchard Hill

WELLINGTON, FL – March 23, 2013 — Piaget rallied from a four-goal deficit to defeat Orchard Hill, 11-10, in the final seconds of the semifinals to advance into Sunday’s Butler Handicap final at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

Grand Champions Polo Club-based Piaget, the 2012 Butler Handicap champion, will meet ERG, 12-7 winners over Audi in Thursday’s other semifinal, at 12 noon for the title.

Piaget’s 10-goalers Miguel Astrada and Sapo Caset, 23-year-old Nacho Badiola and team captain Melissa Ganzi turned in their finest performance of the 26 high-goal season and the timing couldn’t be more perfect.

“The timing is amazing because we really want to go into the U.S. Open playing our best polo and we want to do well,” Ganzi said. “When we put the team together we thought we were one of the stronger teams so it’s nice to be playing up to our potential.

With a few lineup adjustments, Piaget looked like the team they have always looked like on paper.

“Changing the lineup was a strategic structural plan,” Ganzi said.

After Caset scored the tying goal on a penalty shot with 1:41 left, Caset scored the winning goal on a breakaway and very fast pony with 30 seconds remaining in regulation time to give Piaget a thrilling victory.

“I was thinking I have to score,” Caset said. “I remember the one I missed against Lechuza on the first day of the Gold Cup. It was more or less the same. So today I said I am making this one.”

Piaget had a balanced scoring attack. Caset led the team with five goals. Astrada and Badiola each had three goals. Orchard Hill’s Matias MacDonough scored a game-high seven goals.

“We’re very happy; the team finally played well today,” Piaget coach Joey Casey said. “That is the best game we have had. Finally, we hit the ball. We had one bad chukker and fixed it at halftime. They all played well today. The team’s horses went well which is really good. It was a good win.”

Caset returned to the lineup after missing Sunday’s stadium game against ERG with the flu. With a makeshift lineup of two 5-goalers, Piaget nearly knocked off ERG, losing a one-goal decision, 7-6.

Caset was still feeling the after-effects of the flu in the first two chukkers but it didn’t seem to hamper his playing ability.

“We wanted to play good,” Caset said. “We changed the positions. I played more in front and I was more open. I felt more free. I think this change is good for the team.

“I am still a little bit sick,” Caset said. “I didn’t have air the first two chukkers; I couldn’t breathe. I got a little tired early in the first two chukkers because it was a tough game.”

Badiola, making his IPC 26-goal debut this season, had a confidence-building MVP performance playing at the back with lightning quickness and some outstanding defensive plays keeping Orchard Hill out of several scoring opportunities.

“He played great today; he was awesome; the whole team played well,” Casey said. “Melissa played good, Sapo played his best game today and Miguel played awesome. If we stay with this game plan I think we will do really well.”

Casey said the biggest adjustment was moving Badiola at back giving Astrada confidence to go forward with Sapo running.

“I feel much better playing back,” Badiola said. “From the back I can see a little bit more of what goes on. It’s easier for me to look from outside. Today we played much better; we were organized and playing a better system. Today was a good day for our confidence. It was a good game because we won and played better.”

Piaget came up big in the final two chukkers, outscoring Orchard Hill, 4-2 and 3-1.

“This game was very important for us to play well to get the team going,” Astrada said. “We tried the changes and they worked very well.

“I watched Sapo take the ball and I was keeping my fingers crossed until the ball went in,” Astrada said. “Sapo did play well sick. We are trying to keep the virus in his system.”

WELLINGTON, FL – March 21, 2013 — Audi, leading after the opening chukker, fell behind at the half and was unable to regain its composure, dropping a 12-7 decision to ERG in the Butler Handicap semifinals on Thursday at Everglades Polo Club.

It was Audi’s third consecutive loss after opening the USPA Piaget Gold Cup with impressive wins over Zorzal and C. V. Whitney champion Alegria.

In its three losses to Valiente, Zacara and ERG, Audi has been outscored, 38-24.

Grand Champions Polo Club-based Audi will now have a week to regroup and fine tune for the 109th Maserati U.S. Open which opens next week. Audi opens up against Coca-Cola on Thursday at 2 p.m.

“We hope to put this behind us and think about the U.S. Open,” said Audi 10-goaler Gonzalito Pieres. “If we think about this game we’re going to get in trouble.

“This one we have to forget, see how we do in the Open draw and play good polo. We can play good polo. We need to get it right. We are a good team; we have good players. It’s just not working at the moment, but we know we can do it.”

Pieres’ younger brother Nico led Audi scoring with five goals including three on penalty shots. Gonzalito Pieres added two goals. ERG’s Tincho Merlos had a game-high seven goals.

Audi took an early 2-1 lead on two Nico Pieres goals. The game remained close in the second chukker with ERG taking a 4-3 lead.

In the third chukker, Audi squandered away scoring opportunities and let up on defense allowing ERG to outscore them, 5-1, for a 9-4 halftime lead.

Audi came within three goals in the fifth chukker (10-7) but could not overcome its bad passing, unforced errors and miscommunication.

The game was delayed with 2:43 left in the final chukker when some of the field’s sprinklers came on. Play resumed ten minutes later.

“I think the last two games we had a few good chukkers,” Gonzalito Pieres said. “Today we did not score goals; our passes were really bad. At the moment, everything fell apart.”

Grand Champions Polo Club-based Piaget, led by team captain Melissa Ganzi and 10-goalers Miguel Astrada and Sapo Caset, fully recovered from the flu that sidelined him for a game, plays Orchard Hill, in the other Butler Handicap semifinal on Friday at 10 a.m. on Field 4 at International Polo Club Palm Beach.

The winners advance to the championship final on Sunday at noon.

Last year Piaget, then rated 23 goals with Melissa Ganzi, Alejandro Astrada, Nic Roldan and Rodrigo Andrade, won the Butler Handicap with a 14-10 victory over Las Monjitas.

Roldan, a Cardinal Newman alum, was named Most Valuable Player after scoring eight goals. Roldan’s gray mare, Dona, was named Best Playing Pony.
