Atlanta Spring Classic Closes Out Another Successful Two Weeks

Amateur rider Melissa Rudershausen of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania and her own Gunner won their first grand prix Saturday when they emerged the victors in the $25,000 EMO Grand Prix, besting a field of fourteen horse and rider teams.

Rudershausen purchased the Holsteiner-Thoroughbred cross from Aaron Vale about three years ago and has been showing him in the high amateurs until last year and just this year, started their grand prix competitions.  While they have placed in three of their last four grand prix, their win in the $25,000 EMO Grand Prix proved that the fifth grand prix was their lucky number.

The weather forecast looked ominous and the Classic Company management team made the executive decision to move the grand prix to the covered arena. “Paul Jewell did a great job,” commented Rudershausen.  “The lines were technical but straight-forward.  Sure, they came up on you a bit being under the covered arena, but it was a very inviting course overall,” she said.  “The crowd didn’t seem to mind,” said Classic Company President, Bob Bell. “The VIP was sold out and everyone was there ringside.  It was a great class for everyone!” he added.

Last week’s $25,000 CWD Grand Prix winner, Glenn Hartigan of Canton, Georgia, was the first clear round to go in the class riding Ace of Spies, owned by Phyllis Hines, and turned in a first round effort in 76.610 seconds, well within the 79 seconds to beat.  Their jump off round was also clean and the pair set the time to beat at 41.641 seconds, within the time allowed of 45 seconds.  However, with thirteen more to go, it was still anyone’s class.

Rudershausen and Gunner was the next horse and rider team to turn in a clean first round effort.  Her jump off round in 36.998 seconds set the new time to beat, making it clear for anyone in the class that she and Gunner were going to be a force to contend with.

Amanda Flint of Long Valley, New Jersey was next to go clean in the irons of the Coverboy Group’s Newlight VDL and posted a time of 77.973 seconds.  However, their subsequent clean second round in a time of 40.507 was not going to beat Rudershausen and Gunner and Flint and Newlight VDL finished in second place overall.

The last to go in the class was Thomas John Russell of Columbus, North Carolina in the irons of Lillian Hahn’s Karenina.  The pair turned in a clean first round effort in 75.769 seconds.  Despite the fact that the two sat in the enviable last to go spot, their jump off round resulted in four jump faults and a time of 38.274 seconds. The pair would finish in fourth place overall and secure the win for Rudershausen and Gunner.  Second place would rest with Flint and Newlight VDL, third place would remain with Hartigan and Ace of Spies, and fourth place was won by Thomas John Russell and Karenina.

Fifth place was awarded to Daniel Geitner of Aiken, South Carolina and Friller, owned by Catherine Stumberg, after the pair turned in a first round effort with four jump faults and 75.519 seconds.

Sixth place was awarded to Francois Lamontagne of St. Eustache, Quebec, Canada and Ferme Lamontagne’s Usefull who turned in a first round effort with four jump faults and one time fault in a time of 79.048 seconds.  Devin Ryan of Long Valley, New Jersey and Sima Morgello’s Chantilly placed seventh after a first round effort in eight jump faults with a time of 72.956 seconds.  Geitner returned for an eighth place ribbon, this time riding the Kenwood Syndicate’s Kenwood after posting a first round time in 73.889 seconds and eight jump faults.  Anne Bingler of Winter Garden, Florida and her own Tanimara finished in ninth, Flint and the Coverboy Group’s VDL Zedaldine wrapped up tenth place, Hartigan and Phyllis Hines’ Johny Bravo captured eleventh, and Flint and the Coverboy Group’s Child Z finished in twelfth place overall.

Rudershausen started riding on the family farm in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania with her mother and was one of the cute little riders in the Devon lead line.  She started showing when she was six and rode in the local shows until about the age of nine.  “I discovered jumpers at the age of fourteen and never looked back,” she said.  “Some key trainers for me along the way have been Don Stewart, Sergio Campos, Emil Spadone, Chrissie Kear and most recently Paulo Miranda,” said Rudershausen.

“I had a great winter and showing and winning at the Atlanta Spring Classic with Gunner was great.  But I’m also really happy because my six year old horse, Undelie de Roset, won the six year old class here too,” she added.

Rudershausen splits her time between Ocala, Florida at her Barren’s Edge Farm and the Kennett Square area in Pennsylvania.  Besides a busy show and training schedule, the ambitious amateur rider is also active in finding homes for horses she has rescued and specifically, providing second careers for off the track Thoroughbreds.

“We had a very good turnout for our Atlanta Spring Classic and would like to thank all of the competitors, their trainers, family and friends for making this such a tremendous success,” said Bob Bell, President of Classic Company.

“We especially appreciate the support of our sponsors, and would like to thank them for their contribution to Classic Company show jumping events as well as the sport as a whole,” he added.

“We wish everyone a happy Spring and Easter and bid you safe travels wherever your truck and trailer may lead you,” he said. “We hope that your horse show road heads back to see us this June in Atlanta.”

Atlanta Spring Classic Week 2 Update

Devin Ryan and Chantilly soar over the CWD jump on their way to the win in the $5,000 Open Jumper Welcome Class. Flashpoint Photography.

The second week of the Atlanta Spring Classic is underway and attendance confirms the fact that the great migration is underway.  Riders are making the Georgia International Horse Park and the Atlanta Spring Classic a stop on their way home after a long winter of showing.

The $5,000 Open Jumper Welcome class Thursday saw Jersey boy Devin Ryan of Long Valley in the irons of Sima Morgello’s Chantilly win the class after turning in a first round effort in 61.124 seconds and a second clear round in a time of 36.690 seconds.  Ryan and Chantilly also won the Welcome the first week of the Atlanta Spring Classic. “I thought it was a nice course,” said Ryan. “There was nothing over-challenging and it was pretty straightforward,” he added.

Melissa Rudershausen of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania and her own Gunner were the first to go in the class and turned in a clear first round effort in 65.870 seconds, well within the 76 seconds time allowed. Their clear second round in a time of 39.283 seconds set the time to beat, but with the entire class yet to go, it was still anybody’s call who would win.

Francois Lamontagne of Saint-Eustache, Quebec, Canada and Nature des Pierres, owned by Christina Macdougall, turned in a first round time of 60.229 seconds.  Their second round was also clean and their time of 38.102 seconds set the new time to beat.

Ryan was the next to go clean and his second round time set the lead which would inevitably win the class.

Daniel Geitner and the Kenwood Syndicate’s Kenwood were the next clear round in 63.514 seconds, but their second round effort in a time of 40.369 seconds resulted in four jump faults and would see the pair finishing in fourth place overall.

Haley Lubow of Nashville, Tennessee and Krisley Hill Equine Investments’ Calligraphy followed Geitner and turned in the next clean effort in 66.170 seconds.   However, their second round time of 49.257 seconds would result in four jump faults and see them finish in fifth place overall.

Amanda Flint of Long Valley, New Jersey and the Coverboy Group’s VDL Zedaldine followed Lubow and turned in a clean first round in a time of 67.863 seconds.  However, eight jump faults in their second round effort in 42.557 seconds would see them finish in sixth place overall.

Ann Horrell Glaus of Ocala, Florida and Troy Glaus’ Boujis was next to go and turned in the fastest four fault first round effort in a time of 59.687 seconds.  The pair would finish in eighth place overall.

Flint returned for a final round this time in the irons of Child Z, owned by the Coverboy Group, and turned in a first round effort in 66.600 seconds. In the enviable last to go spot, the pair tackled the second round, but four jump faults and thirty one time faults saw them finish in seventh place overall.

The top three finished with Ryan holding the lead with Chantilly, followed by Lamontagne and Nature des Pierres, and the third place was awarded to Rudershausen and Gunner.

“Chantilly is a great horse,” said Ryan. “She has tremendous scope and talent,” he added.  “I have been in the top six of every grand prix we have done together and I just started riding her before Gulfport.”

Ryan has been on the road for the past three months and just finished with the six weeks at the Gulf and the two Atlanta Spring Classic shows. “We are heading back to Jersey after this week,” he said.

“All of my horses have been great this winter,” said Ryan.  “I have a talented group of young horses and a very supportive group of owners and sponsors.  I appreciate all of them!” he said.

Atlanta Spring Classic Week 1 Update

Glen Hartigan and Ace of Spies clear an oxer on their way to the win in Saturday’s $25,000 CWD Grand Prix. Flashpoint Photography.

The official first day of spring coincided with the second day of the Atlanta Spring Classic at the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers, Georgia.  The Classic Company just finished up at the Mississippi Gulf Coast before it trekked to Georgia to kick off two weeks of AA show jumping competition last week.

Equestrians love riding at the famous 1996 Olympic Stadium.  For many with dreams of Olympic fame, there is no other venue where riders can capture that feeling of excellence and fuel their passion.

“The Atlanta Spring Classic is a rite of spring for many of us,” commented Bob Bell, President of the Classic Company.  “We love the Gulf,” said Bell, “but this is just the perfect location for many riders heading back north to catch another week or two of competition en route to their northern bases after a long winter of showing,” he added.

Atlanta Is Jumpin’!

The $5,000 Open Jumper Welcome Class took place Thursday and it was Devin Ryan of Long Valley, New Jersey who not only won the class, in the irons of Sima Morgello’s Chantilly, but also took a fourth and fifth place ribbons with Don Stewart’s Cavansto and Eagle Valley Partners LLC’s Quandorette Z, respectively.

Francois Lamontagne of Saint-Eustache, Quebec, Canada rode Christina Macdougall’s Nature des Pierres to second place, while Haley Lebow of Nashville, Tennessee rode Krisley Hill Equine Investments’ Calligraphy to a third place finish.  Sixth place was awarded to Glen Hartigan of Canton, Georgia and Phyllis Hines’ Ace of Spies.

Obviously the Thursday Welcome was a good warm-up for Hartigan and Ace of Spies as the team went on to win the $25,000 CWD Grand Prix Saturday after they turned in the only fault-free first round in 79.921 seconds, well within the 87 seconds time allowed.

“The course was definitely challenging,” commented course designer Paul Jewel of Lambertville, New Jersey.

Hartigan agreed: “The course was pretty hard. But it’s a grand prix and set at the national standard,” he said.

The first to go in the class was Francois Lamontagne, riding Christina Macdougall’s Nature Des Pierres.  The pair looked to go clean, but a heartbreak rail at the last fence gave them four jump faults and a time of 82.943 seconds, which put them in third place overall. Hartigan took to the course with Phyllis Hines’ Johny Bravo and turned in a first round effort with twelve jump faults and a time of 82.656 seconds, landing them in fifth place overall.

Haley Lubow was next up in the irons of Krisley Hill Equine Investments’ Calligraphy.  But with twelve jump faults and a time of 83.665 seconds, the pair would settle for sixth place overall.

Daniel Geitner of Aiken, South Carolina and the Kenwood Syndicate’s Kenwood looked like they were on their way to the win, but a rail down at fence 11 gave them four jump faults, which combined with their time of 81.261 seconds, would see them finish in second place overall.

It was still anyone’s class by the time Hartigan and his next mount, Phyllis Hines’ Ace of Spies, entered the ring.  “It was a tough track starting out with a triple combination, but it was fair.  There were some excellent horses in there and you had Francois [Lamontagne] who rode for the Team [Canada] and Devin’s [Ryan] horses are very talented too,” he added.

Thursday’s Open Jumper Welcome winner, Devin Ryan, was one of the last to go in the irons of Simma Morgello’s Chantilly, but with a eight jump faults and a time of 79.079 seconds, the pair would finish in fourth place overall, leaving Hartigan and Ace of Spies with their first place finish.

Ace of Spies goes by the nickname Reilly and his name is based on a series of novels called, ‘Reilly, the Ace of Spies’.  “This is Reilly’s third grand prix with me. He is a fabulous horse and a very good jumper,” said Hartigan.  “Phyllis usually rides him in the AO division.  But once in a while I get to ride him and he is really fun,” he said.  “Reilly has this great personality, kind of like a pony.  But he is really sweet.  Phyllis has been such a great supporter of ours and she is such a pleasure to work with,” he added. “We’re so happy she is part of our barn.”

Originally from Novia Scotia, Canada, Hartigan spent most of his professional life in Germany where he met his wife Stephanie, a dressage rider and trainer.  The couple moved to Georgia about four years ago and together they raise their five year old son, Connor.

“I’m having a great time here and will have nine horses showing with me this week,” Hartigan said.

Hunters Were Hopping

Yvetta Newman of Southampton, New York and the Topping Riding Club made the trip to Conyers, Georgia so she could ride in the Atlanta Spring Classic.  “We really needed a break from the winter and we love to support Bob and his shows,” she said.

The Classic Company’s new Atlanta Classic Official Veterinarian, Dr. James Hassinger, riding his own Sandro, was champion in the 3’3″ Amateur Owner Hunter over 36 Division Sunday.

Sitting Pretty!  Equitation Winners

Courtney Osborne won the ASPCA Maclay and Liddy Strickland won the Junior Southeast Medal.

A full schedule kicks off this week and will feature the $2,500 Second Chance Thoroughbred Division as well as the $25,000 EMO Grand Prix on Saturday.  The $5,000 Open Jumper Welcome is slated for Thursday and a wealth of hunter, equitation, amateur, pony and even walk trot divisions will fill the rings all week.  There’s always something for everyone at the Classic Company.  So if you haven’t reserved a stall yet, make sure to email jonathan@classicccompany.com today.

New Faces at the Atlanta Spring Classic

Dr. James Hassinger shows in the pre-green hunter division. Flashpoint Photography.

Spring is in the air and so is the Atlanta Spring Classic, set to take place at the Georgia International Horse Park on March 19 through 30 for two weeks of AA show jumping excitement!

The Classic Company is pleased to announce two additions to its official roster.  Dr. James Hassinger, Veterinarian of Hassinger Equine Sports Medicine, will be the Official Veterinarian of the Atlanta Spring Classic, and Tim Patrick, Certified Journeyman Farrier, will be the Official Farrier for the shows.

Dr. Hassinger is a graduate of North Carolina State University and Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine. He has been actively practicing veterinary medicine for 31 years. In 2003, Dr. Hassinger narrowed his focus and opened Hassinger Equine Service in Aberdeen, North Carolina as a sports medicine and performance centered practice dedicated to equine lameness, performance management, rehabilitation and imaging. Dr. Hassinger is also an active rider both at Hassinger Farm and at shows along the East Coast, including the Classic Company shows.

Hassinger Equine Sports Medicine is one of the only clinics in the United States to have a cutting-edge, mobile veterinary hospital. The mobile clinic is a state of the art facility in which they are able to complete all the same services as in their home location in a surgically sound environment, such as intra-articular joint injections. The clinic provides a climate controlled, horse-friendly environment while traveling to horse shows around the nation and private facilities.

“Many of our clients show at the Classic Company and we’re very much looking forward to being on-site so we can provide the vet care they may require,” commented Dr. Hassinger.

“While our focus is sports medicine, we also handle all colics, lacerations and any other problems your horses may have,” said Dr. Hassinger.

According to Dr. Hassinger, his wife Amy is the “boss” of the operation and is equally available during the events as are a number of staff.  “We’ll have Dylan Thomas, Dr. Alison Roth and our office manager Krystal Gray with us too. And most important, our groom Reuben who has been with us for thirteen years,” said Dr. Hassinger.  “In 2013 we were on the road for 32 weeks at horse shows and we’re looking forward to adding the Atlanta Classic shows to our list of events,” he added.

“We like the people at the Classic Company-they are all so nice.  They are serious about their work, but also like to have fun.  It’s the perfect combination,” he commented.

Emily Hertz, Assistant Trainer who works with David Pelligrini at Spring Mill Farm in Memphis, Tennessee, said, “I think Dr. Hassinger did a great job for us.  He is very thorough, provides excellent care, tied up all the loose ends and made it really easy for us.  His team is very professional and they have a great way with the horses,” she said.  “We’re definitely excited to have him in Atlanta,” she added.

Besides traveling to shows and caring for horses, in the Hassinger’s spare time they like to sail and spend time with their two grandchildren.  They travel to the shows with their full staff, three dogs (two Jacks and a Heeler) as well as their three horses.  Amy competes in the Adult Amateurs and Dr. Hassinger shows in the pre-green hunters.  This video they made of their life on the horse show road acts as a nice introduction to the Hassinger team!

Tim Patrick, CJF [Certified Journeyman Farrier] will also be joining the Classic Company as its new Official Farrier for the Atlanta Classic shows.  “Troy Van Heusen has been with us for years and is a very well-loved and well-respected farrier,” commented Bob Bell, President of Classic Company. “However, he told us he needed some time off and we respect his request,” he said.  “We are thrilled that Tim readjusted his schedule so he could join us in Atlanta,” commented Bell.  “Tim came to us three years ago as our Official Farrier for Pensacola from a recommendation from Patty Foster.  Tim Patrick is a committed farrier who often travels to the Classic Company shows in order to take care of several of his clients, including Patty Foster and Marylisa Leffler’s Rolling Acres Farm from Brookville, Maryland,” he added.

Tim Patrick brings over 30 years of experience to the Classic Company.  He has shod pony champions to grand prix champions and provides all shoeing services directed to the specific needs of the horse. “I am excited to be there in Atlanta because Classic Company does great shows and I work hard to be exhibitor friendly too,” he said.  “I am there for the horses and riders and I’m looking forward to it!” he added.

The Georgia International Horse Park is a favorite destination among horsemen and women.  “We love the rings, the permanent stalls with mats and the class offerings,” said David Jennings of Full Circle Farm in Nashville, Tennessee.

Anyone who has shown with the Classic Company knows what sets them apart from the rest:  Classic Shows are FUN!  After the Gulf Coast Winter Classic Circuit, the fun will move to the Georgia International Horse Park for the Atlanta Spring Classic Shows. Weekly grand prix, complimentary ringside Saturday pizza, and VIP seating – all with the exhibitor in mind! And remember, Classic Company does not charge extra office fees for credit card transactions nor is there a scratch or add fee!  Classic Company wants to make your showing experience the best ever!

Devin Ryan and No Worries Win the $25,000 EMO Grand Prix

March 30, 2013 – Conyers, Georgia – It was a sold out scene in yesterday’s VIP as spectators watched Devin Ryan from Long Valley, New Jersey make his way to the winner’s circle in the irons of Barbara Rowand’s No Worries to win the $25,000 EMO Grand Prix!  This was Ryan’s first time to the Georgia International Horse Park and the Atlanta Spring Classic and the first grand prix win for No Worries!

Frances Land of Alpharetta, Georgia, in the irons on her own Merlin, was first to go in the prix, but after a first round time of 83.230 seconds and eight time faults, the pair would settle for seventh place.  Next to go was The Coverboy Group’s VDL Zedaldine ridden by Amanda Flint of Long Valley, New Jersey. With a first round time of 91.142 seconds, one time fault and twenty jumping faults, the pair would not place.  Third in the line-up was Collin, owned by Positive-ism, Inc. and ridden by Amanda Wise of Fairfield, Connecticut.  The pair jumped the first round in a time of 89.579 seconds and accumulated eight jump faults which would see them finish in eleventh place.

There was still no jump-off in site, until Joe Fargis of Middleburg, Virginia entered the ring in the irons aboard Sandron’s Lariat.  The pair went clean with a time of 90.416 seconds and would sit in the first position for the upcoming jump-off order of go.

Next to go was Davenport, owned by Hartmut Gutzmann and ridden by Benjamin Rosichan of Tryon, North Carolina.  The pair turned in a first round time of 90.338 seconds with twenty jumping faults and would finish in twelfth place.  Robert Lee, aboard Brook Run Farm, LLC’s El Grecco, was next to enter the ring and finished their first round clean in a time of 85.325 seconds, giving them a second to go spot in the upcoming jump-off. Ryan entered the ring next with Barbara Rowland’s No Worries, and after turning in a clear first round time of 83.948 seconds, let the others know there was actually plenty to worry about with them in the running for the jump-off.

Flint and VDL Theresa Lady, whom Flint co-owns with The Coverboy Group, entered the ring next and after turning in a first-round effort of 85.772 seconds and eight jump faults, would settle for ninth place.  Adam Cramer of Pittstown, New Jersey and Equi Sport LLC’s Luke 54 were next to go and turned in a first round effort in 89.108 seconds with eight jump faults which would see the pair finish in tenth place overall.

Frances Land of Alpharetta, Georgia and her own Vieanne were next to go, and after a first-round clean effort in 81.560 seconds would see themselves in the jump-off line up.  MaryLisa Leffler of Brookeville, Maryland riding Paulexi LLC’s Quastor Van De Helle Z added themselves to the jump-off order after turning in a clean first-round effort in 87.156 seconds.  Devin Ryan returned to the ring, this time aboard Eagle Valley Partner’s Zosja, winner of the $5,000 Open Jumper Welcome class on Wednesday, and turned in an eight fault effort in 85.143 seconds which would seat the duo in eighth place overall.  As the last to go in the first round, Flint entered the ring again, this time aboard Superbad, whom she co-owns with the Coverboy Group, and after a four fault first-round effort in 85.601 seconds, would finish in sixth place overall.

Fargis led the jump-off round with Sandron’s Lariat, but with four jump faults at the final fence and a time of 35.021 seconds, would finish in fifth place overall.  Lee and Brook Run Farm LLC’s El Grecco were next to go and went clean, setting the time to beat at 35.811 seconds.  Ryan and Barbara Rowland’s No Worries were next to go and quickly took the lead away from El Grecco after turning in a clean jump-off round in 33.286 seconds.  Land and her own Vieanne were next to go and despite their clear round, their time of 34.991 wouldn’t take the lead and the pair ended in second place.  Leffler was last to go aboard Paulexi LLC’s Quastor Van De Helle Z and although also clean, their time of 35.848 seconds would land them in fourth place overall.

“He is such a fast horse,” commented Ryan.  “I started out conservatively with him, but felt like he was ready to go. So we picked it up and well, there you go!” he smiled.  This was the first grand prix win for “Sydney”.  “We’ve been in the ribbons all winter, won some Welcomes, but this is his first grand prix win.  What a great way to end the winter season together!” said Ryan.  “I also want to thank Sydney’s owner, Barbara Rowland, CWD and all of our sponsors for their support,” he added.

“This was a great show to hit on our way back to New Jersey.  It gave the horses a break, the show facility is amazing — really nice — and the competition was good.  And the Classic staff just makes all of their shows so nice,” he added.  “I really appreciate them finishing up the shows so we can all be home for Easter. That was really considerate of them and I know many of us appreciate that!” he added.

Atlanta Spring Classic I – Cherry Blossom Week

We finished our first week of Atlanta today with great weather and lots of entries.  We were very lucky this week when the giant storms made their way east; they split and went north and south of the show grounds and we had only minutes of rain instead of hours.

At the top of the Grand Prix ring, the city of Conyers hosts the Cherry Blossom Festival.  This year, I was told, the crowds were heading towards the record books.  It’s been great to share our week with the city and the festival.

The winner of the Cherry Blossom $25,000 Grand Prix was Robert Lee aboard his mount El Grecco. Robert was also second on his other horse Acrobat.  I also have to add that Robert shows in the Amateur Owner Hunters and was Reserve Champion on his horse Shock Top. A man for all seasons.  Congrats Robert – glad you are showing at our shows this spring.
