American Saddlebred Five-Gaited Swap Premieres at Alltech National Horse Show

Lexington, KY – October 29, 2013 – Tomorrow evening, there will be a game-changing event at the Alltech National Horse Show, 130th edition. It will be a night to remember, as four World’s Champion American Saddlebred trainers will team up with the top-tier hunter and showjumping professionals to compete in the Five-Gaited Swap Wednesday evening in the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

It will be a spectacle to watch the stars of each discipline swap places, and tackle a new feat in their riding careers. American Saddlebred trainers Clark Clouse, Melinda Moore, Melissa Moore and Stephanie Sedlacko will ride over a hunter course set with 3-foot obstacles, as Grand Prix Show Jumpers McLain Ward and Laura Kraut along with professional hunter riders Jennifer Alfano and Hunt Tosh ride to a new rhythm: the five-gaited stride.

The Five-Gaited Swap is new to the Alltech National Horse Show this year, but two of the hunter/jumper competitors are not new to being pushed outside of their comfort zone. In fact, McLain Ward won the Five-Gaited Special Class at the Devon Horse Show in May of this year, and Alfano ranked close behind to take the third place. The class brings the disciplines together, promoting the horses and sportsmanship in tandem.

“I thought it was great,” Alfano reminisced. “It was so much fun, and I appreciate them letting us do it. I look forward to giving it another shot during Wednesday’s event. It is a very unusual class, but it is definitely a highlight, and something I am thrilled they brought to the Alltech National Horse Show.”

The Five-Gaited Swap will commence immediately after the Hackney Pony Amateur Stake comes to a conclusion. Each American Saddlebred trainer will be paired with one of the show jumping riders and together, the team with the best-combined score will take not only the bragging rights, but also the winning share of the prize money.

The Alltech National Horse Show, for the second year in a row, received a top ranking from NARG, the North American Riders Group and was named the Show Hunter Hall of Fame Horse Show of the Year in back to back years.

The Alltech National Horse Show returns to the Alltech Arena in Lexington, Kentucky, on October 29 through November 3, 2013.

Make sure to join JustWorld International on October 31 as the doors to the Alltech National Horse Show open at 7 a.m. and 50% of any walk-in General Admission tickets will benefit the GIVE 4 GOOD Campaign. The JustWorld International Horseless Horse Show has become a staple for some of the world’s largest equestrian events, and the 130th edition of the Alltech National Horse Show is no exception, as children of all ages will take their turn over fences in its JustWorld International Horseless Horse Show Saturday afternoon, November 2 in the Kids Area adjacent to the Alltech Arena. The Kids Area will be packed with children soaring over fences as they dream of the day they may one day compete on the international scale alongside their role models. Many of those very same role models are JustWorld Professional Rider Ambassadors, and they are advocating for their causes across the world, and at the Alltech National Horse Show.

New Entertainment Joins Alltech National Horse Show with Production Manager Brian Lookabill

Trevor de Groot of American Parkour.

Lexington, KY – October 14, 2013 – The 2013 Alltech National Horse Show is preparing to take horse show entertainment to a whole new level this year during the international competition, running October 29 through November 3, 2013 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. Led by production manager Brian Lookabill, the show will feature both traditional entertainment, as well as new additions such as “Dueling DJs” and Parkour demonstrations by American Parkour.

“There are lot of really cool things happening this year,” explained Lookabill. “Just like we did last year, we’re going to bring back the Saddlebreds, which were a major part of the National Horse Show’s long history. But we’re also going to offer a new spin by adding a Pro/Am Style Saddlebred/Show Jumping event, where the professional Saddlebred riders will actually show over fences, and professional show jumping riders will compete on Saddlebreds. And the great part is that they’ll be scored as a team for ribbons.”

New performances will also be added to the competition’s evening sessions to keep the crowd entertained throughout the night. “We’re going to make sure we have high energy, and feel good music throughout the week,” stated Lookabill. “We’ll have Dueling DJs, which means at certain times a couple of DJs will perform at once and they’ll play off of each other so to offer music and a visual entertainment during the night events.”

The next addition to the Alltech National Horse Show will be Parkour demonstrations by American Parkour. “Parkour is actually a sport where athletes are able to overcome any obstacle that they come across: whether it be scaling a wall, jumping off of a tall wall, or building, or even over a fence, or horse jump.” noted Lookabill. “They flip, roll, and do acrobatic maneuvers. These guys have performed in music videos, commercials, and at major events around the world. They’ll definitely amaze, because they do things that you don’t think people have the ability to do. It’s very high energy and very exciting to watch.”

Lookabill concluded, “On top of all of that I’m excited as always to have the best horses and riders in the world coming out. That is of course the centerpiece of it all, and I think it will all come together for a really fun horse show that builds on a 130 year tradition, while getting better every year.”

With over $850,000 in prize money offered, this year’s show has been designated a CSI-W 5* show by the FEI. The International Open Jumpers will compete for $530,000 in prize money, while the top rated hunter sections have a total purse of $205,000. Meanwhile, $100,000 is offered to the Amateur/Owner and Junior Jumpers and the American Saddlebreds will compete for over $20,000.

The Alltech National Horse Show, for the second year in a row, received a top ranking from NARG, the North American Riders Group and was named the Show Hunter Hall of Fame Horse Show of the Year in back to back years.

2013 Alltech National Horse Show Welcomes Harry deLeyer

Lexington, KY – October 11, 2013 – Harry deLeyer rose to stardom on the back of Snowman, an $80 horse bound for slaughter, in whom deLeyer recognized incredible potential. From a Pennsylvania horse auction to Madison Square Garden, the talented pair made history, winning many of show jumping’s top accolades. Now, the Alltech National Horse Show is thrilled to welcome deLeyer to the Kentucky Horse Park for the 2013 Alltech National Horse Show, to be held Oct. 29 – Nov. 3.

DeLeyer will be present at the show from Thurs., Oct. 29 until Sat., Nov. 2. Throughout his visit, deLeyer will take time to chat with tour groups, including groups from local equestrian programs, schools and Future Farmers of America who will all be touring the Alltech National Horse Show. He will also be available for autographs at a designated time during the show.

On Friday afternoon, DeLeyer will be present at the show’s cocktail reception, to be held at the USHJA building as part of The Kentucky Experience, which gives participants an exciting behind-the-scenes glimpse at the Alltech National Horse Show and the equestrian-rich area surrounding the Kentucky Horse Park.

DeLeyer and Snowman’s “Cinderella story” has been immortalized in countless articles and the acclaimed book, The Eighty-Dollar Champion, and now a movie on DeLeyer’s life is in the works. DeLeyer and the grey gelding claimed their spot in the history books when Snowman was inducted into the Show Jumping Hall of Fame in 1992, so on the afternoon of Sat., Nov. 2, deLeyer will present the awards to the winners of the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Junior/Amateur Grand Prix.

deLeyer011230DeLeyer, known affectionately as “the Galloping Grandfather,” will also be honored prior to the start of the Alltech $250,000 Grand Prix on Saturday evening.

Kentucky Kids Imagine Horse Tales for the Alltech National Horse Show Mascot Naming Contest

[LEXINGTON, Ky.] – It’s a horse, of course, suitably dressed for the show ring in a top hat, buttoned vest and jacket pinned with a winning show ribbon. But before making a debut at this fall’s Alltech National Horse Show, this flashy equine mascot needs a name and a story to tell.

Alltech is counting on Kentucky’s creative kids to come up with a name and a story for the new mascot of the Alltech National Horse Show, Oct. 29 – Nov.3, in the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park. Throughout September, Kentucky’s kids can send Alltech a name and a short story describing the mascot for a chance to win a family prize package with tickets to the Alltech National Horse Show and have their mascot featured in the Lexington Herald-Leader.

Kids are encouraged to exercise their imaginations as they describe how this mascot rose to fame at the Alltech National Horse Show. Did this horse retire from a successful career in show jumping? Or did this horse compete in one of eight official disciplines during the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2010 in Lexington, Ky.? Perhaps the horse was a speedster coming off the track at Keeneland Racecourse, or a trotting champion at the Red Mile. Three prizes will be awarded for the best coloring of the mascot, the most creative name for the mascot and most imaginative overall story for the mascot. Entries will be judged for originality, creativity and an awareness of the role horses play in Kentucky’s heritage.

The official entry form, which also serves as a coloring sheet of the mascot, will appear in the Lexington Herald-Leader on Sept. 4, Sept. 6, Sept. 15, Sept. 18, Sept. 20, Sept. 22 and Sept. 24. The entry form is also available as a PDF online at www.Kentucky.com and www.AlltechNationalHorseShow.com/mascot. The deadline to enter the contest is Oct. 4. Stories and illustrations of the mascot will be accepted on separate sheets of paper. Entries should be sent to:

3031 Catnip Hill Pike
Nicholasville, KY 40356

Throughout September, interesting, creative and funny submissions for the contest will be posted to the Alltech National Horse Show’s Facebook page. The winning coloring sheet, name and story will be featured in a special October edition of the Wednesday Life and Neighbors Section of the Lexington Herald-Leader. Kids and families can come see their coloring sheets and stories on display in the kids’ play area at the Alltech National Horse Show on Saturday, Nov. 2.

Alltech’s equine mascot will be visiting local elementary schools in the weeks leading up to the Alltech National Horse Show. If your youth organization or school would like to request an October visit from the soon-to-be-named mascot, contact Chelsea Magee at cmagee@alltech.com by Sept. 23.

Kentuckians will gather this fall to celebrate three proud traditions deeply rooted in Kentucky – horses, heritage and hops. Alltech will host the first-ever Kentucky Gathering, Oct. 29 – Nov. 3, at the Alltech Arena on the grounds of the Kentucky Horse Park. The week-long festival includes the world-class equestrian sport of the Alltech National Horse Show, the Biggest Loser 5k RunWalk, a showcase of locally crafted brews and artisan foods called Savor Kentucky, and many other fun-filled activities for the entire family.

An American equestrian tradition, the Alltech National Horse Show, Oct. 29 – Nov.3, has reached its stride in the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park. Reserved for the year’s top talent on the North American show circuit, the Alltech National Horse Show opens the ring to a variety of equestrian classes and disciplines, with events including the $250,000 Alltech Grand Prix, the $50,000 LIFEFORCE Elite Puissance and the ASPCA Alfred B. Maclay Finals for youth competitors. For more information, visit www.alltechnationalhorseshow.com.

Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation Part of Kentucky Experience during Alltech National Horse Show

Lexington, KY – September 20, 2013 – Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation is proud to join with Phelps Media Group, Rood & Riddle Hospital, and the United States Hunter Jumper Association as a co-sponsor of the first “Kentucky Experience.” This program is a unique combination of Kentucky horse farm tours, seminars, and social events, all linked with the spectacular Alltech National Horse Show at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation is an organization that funds veterinary research aimed at promoting the health and soundness of all horses and distributes information to further that cause.

In the last 30 years, the Foundation has provided $19.9 million to fund 299 specific projects at 40 universities.

“The Alltech National and the Kentucky Experience combination is a perfect showcase to demonstrate how Grayson-funded research is the friend of all horses, and therefore all horse owners and trainers,” commented Edward L. Bowen, president of the Foundation. “We are associated with The Jockey Club of the Thoroughbred industry, but the research we have funded has created progress on a large range of problems which can afflict any breed or equine activity.”

These include the development of tests for common diseases such as EHV, influenza, botulism, and EPM; increased knowledge of the musculoskeletal system; the use of cryotherapy as a tool against laminitis; the virus abortion vaccine process; and better understanding of placentitis.

“Any horse, especially an athletic competitor, is subject to tendon, ligament, joint, and bone problems,” noted Dr. Johnny Mac Smith, veterinary consultant to the Foundation.  “Likewise, laminitis and most diseases make no discrimination among the breed of their victims. We annually fund projects which address these issues.”  For additional information on the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, click here: http://www.grayson-jockeyclub.org/.

Grayson-Jockey Club is a 501 (c)(3) organization funded primarily by membership dues, other donations, and special fund raising events.

“We welcome as members anyone who cares about the horse and is willing to write a modest check,” said Bowen. Membership levels begin at $100, but the Foundation also welcomes contributions of lesser amounts.

The Kentucky Experience will include free tours of famous Bluegrass area horse farms, a free tour of the world renowned Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, free admission to all sessions of the Alltech National Horse Show, a free reception at the USHJA Museum, including an opportunity to meet some of the star riders of the hunter jumper world before the ring events on Friday night and an opportunity to meet Harry De Leyer, former trainer of Hall of Fame Showjumper Snowman!

This exciting experience will give anyone who signs up at roodandriddle.com/kyexperience free general admission tickets to the Alltech National Horse Show for the duration of the show.

“Our hope is that by opening the doors of the horse show to everyone who signs up for the Kentucky Experience, people will get to experience the pinnacle of equine sport and the Horse Capital of the World,” said Dr. Tom Riddle of Rood & Riddle, the official Equine Hospital and Veterinary Pharmacy of the Alltech National Horse Show.

On the morning of Friday, November 1, 2013, the Kentucky Experience will open the gates of some of the Bluegrass region’s most famous horse farms to all participants as a part of the Kentucky Experience Bus Tours. All Kentucky Experience participants will board buses at the Kentucky Horse Park and then be taken to some of Kentucky’s most famous horse farms where they will be shown around the barns and grounds to see world famous Thoroughbred and Warmblood stallions.

Following the farm tours, participants will be walked through the world famous Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital to see the outstanding care given to horses of all breeds and disciplines. Participants will then be taken back to the Kentucky Horse Park where they will able to watch the horse show or visit the world class shops and restaurants that accompany it at their leisure.

The Rood & Riddle Sport Horse Symposium will be held on Friday afternoon at the Horse Park and Kentucky Experience participants will be given tickets to attend this always sold out event.

Friday night the United States Hunter Jumper Association will open the doors of its museum to host all Kentucky Experience participants for a light cocktail reception preceding a night of world-class showjumping in the Alltech Arena. During this reception, participants will have a chance to meet star riders from both the hunter and jumper world!

ASPCA Maclay Regionals Features Top Young Juniors Riders across the Country

Region 2 Winner Michael Hughes.

Lexington, KY – September 20, 2013 – It was an exciting weekend for the top equitation riders as they competed in numerous ASPCA Maclay Regionals to vie for a spot in the coveted Finals at the Alltech National Horse Show.  The competition was stiff as the top junior riders went head-to-head in a battle of the best and the chance to take it all. In Region 2 the winning honors went to Michael Hughes, while Hunter Holloway took the Region 5 title. Kelli Cruciotti was presented with the Region 6 Championship, while Haley Stradling piloted her mount to the Region 7 top honors. Olivia Champ rode to the top of the ranks for Region 8.

The ASPCA Maclay Horsemanship class has been held since 1933, and it is one of the most prestigious competitions for junior riders in the United States. Its winners are some of the biggest names in the equestrian sport. Previous winners include: William Steinkraus in 1941, Frank Chapot (1948), George Morris (1952), Leslie Burr Howard (1972), and Nicole Shahinian Simpson in 1992. The 2011 ASPCA winner was Sarah Milliren and Jacob Pope took the title during last year’s 2012 Alltech National Horse Show.

The top 61 competitors from Region 2 gathered at Old Salem Farm during the at 2013 American Gold Cup CSI4*-W to showcase their skills and qualify for the ASPCA Maclay Championships at the Alltech National Horse Show. After an over fences phase, a flat phase, and a test of the top four, it was Michael Hughes of Allendale, NJ, earning the win. Lillie Keenan was awarded the second place honors, while Victoria Colvin captured the third place position.

Region 5 Winner Hunter Holloway
Region 5 Winner Hunter Holloway

The Region 5 Maclay Regionals were held last weekend during the St. Louis National Charity Horse Show in Lake Saint Louis, MO. It was Hunter Holloway who rode to the top of the class, earning the top score, and catching the judges’ scrutinizing eye for the second year in a row. Caroline Mcleese took the second place honors, while Taylor Sutton rode to the third place award.

The Colorado Spring Fall Classic welcomed competitors to Colorado Springs, CO, with a challenging equitation course and a contest that proved fierce for Region 6.  Kelli Cruciotti came out on top, rising to the challenge and leaving nothing to chance. Ruth Foley was awarded the red ribbon, while Alessandra Sozzi finished in third.

Haley Stradling piloted her mount to the Region 7 Championship during the Northwest Autumn Classic in Monroe, WA. She posted a fantastic round, securing the top spot. Kendall Pedigo was presented with the second place ribbon for her efforts, while last year’s victor Sara Nordstrom took the third place honors.

The West Coast 2013 ASPCA Maclay Regionals for Region 8 took center stage in the Blenheim Indoor at the Oaks Fall Classic held in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Thirty-four riders qualified for the event, but it was Olivia Champ who rode to the top of the ranks. Morgan Dickerson took the reserve championship, while third place was awarded to Shelby Drazan for her beautiful efforts throughout the class.

It was a fantastic start to the ASPCA Maclay Regionals. This upcoming weekend will see Regions 1, 3 and 4 getting underway. Region 1 will compete on Sunday, September 22, at the Fairfield Hunt Club and the Southeast Medal Finals will host Region 3. On Saturday, September 21, the Kentucky National tests the nation’s best from Region 4. The top qualified riders from each region will travel to the 130th Alltech National Horse Show held at the picturesque Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY, for the ASPCA Maclay National Championships in November. The anticipation is high as the riders and their talented mounts compete for the coveted title.
