Wellington, FL (March 20, 2015) – Katherine Bateson-Chandler snared the blue ribbon in the Grand Prix Special at the recent Adequan Global Dressage Festival 10 CDI-W against a strong field of competitors. She her longtime partner Alcazar, Jane Forbes Clark’s ten-year-old KWPN gelding (Cantango-Polin, Ferro), earned a 71.255 percent as the sun set on the international dressage series’ show grounds.

The victory was their first in the 2015 CDI season — following several Grand Prix wins in the national division — and she was thrilled with their results.

“I just can’t believe we won the Grand Prix Special!” Bateson-Chandler exclaimed. “I’m so, so proud of baby ‘Lonzie’ all grown up. He was brave under the lights and trusted me. I’m thankful to all our amazing supporters. For sure we couldn’t have done close to this without you.”

Bateson-Chandler explains that the gelding is a tricky horse, and his show anxiety causes him to appear lazy instead of nervous. She and her coach in the U.S., Debbie McDonald, have been working on improving his confidence — and as he showed in the Grand Prix Special, he is truly coming to trust his rider as they head down centerline.

“I’m overwhelmingly happy with my win,” Bateson-Chandler smiled. “My goal had been to go in and give my horse some confidence under the lights and he so beyond exceeded my expectations. I still can’t quite believe it! It’s so special to me that he could go in at night and pull off that test. It shows me how far we’ve come.”

The 39-year-old rider was born in the U.K., and moved to the U.S. in 1986 to be Robert Dover’s groom and assistant trainer. In 2008, she struck out on her own to begin her own training business.

In 2010, Bateson-Chandler represented the U.S. at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Kentucky, aboard Nartan, also owned by Clark. As part of Team USA, the pair earned a fourth-place team finish and individually qualified for the Grand Prix Special. After Nartan’s retirement, she took over Alcazar’s ride from Dover. In 2014, they claimed the 2014 Adequan USDF Horse of the Year title for the Intermediaire II.

The horse and rider began their big tour this winter show season. The pair will be heading to the U.K. in April to work with Carl Hester and to compete in Europe.

Bateson-Chandler owns KBC Dressage in Wellington, where she offers training, coaching, lessons and clinics for horses and riders from the United States and Europe. She also offers scouting and prospect selection for clients seeking exceptional horses. Her experience at the international Grand Prix level offers riders a competitive edge — whether through coaching as an eye on the ground, bringing young horses up the levels, or campaigning seasoned FEI competitors. Tina Irwin and Fancy That Finish AGDF 10 with a Win in the FEI Intermediaire 1 Freestyle

Wellington, FL – March 15, 2015 – Competition for AGDF 10 concluded on Sunday with the 2015 Florida International Dressage Youth Championships (FIDYC) as well as the FEI Intermediaire 1 Freestyle CDI-W 1*. The FIDYC, sponsored by Hampton Green Farm, Pana Cavallo and the Davis Family, and Dressage4Kids, showcased the talent of 35 upcoming riders from around the world. The Overall division winners included: Chase Hickok (USA) for U-25, Dana van Lierop (NED) in the Young Rider division, Juan Matute, Jr. (ESP) in the Juniors, and Amanda Mcauliffe (USA) in the Pony division. AGDF 12, with CDIO3*/CDI3*/CDI1* competition is the final week of the circuit, held March 24-27.

Chase Hickok of Wellington, FL had a spectacular week aboard Hyperion Stud LLC’s Sagacious HF. Hickok, who is a full time resident in Wellington, has been able to compete at several CDIs this season. “We took last week off to go back to training before the championships and I think it was overall much better than previous weeks, so I’m really happy with that,” she said. “It’s a great feeling to be a part of a championship weekend and it’s a great sense of camaraderie and a great opportunity to compete with so many great riders.”

With an incredible performance in the Young Rider Freestyle this morning, receiving a 77.925%, and an 80.500% from the Judge at M, it is clear that van Lierop is an incredible talent for the Dutch in dressage. “I’m thrilled and proud of everything that we accomplished this week. It’s amazing to see all of the other riders here and be able to compete in a new environment. I have to truly thank the owner, Jochen Arl. He made this all happen, and I am so incredibly thankful for him giving us the opportunity to compete here,” she expressed.

Juan Matute, Jr., a familiar face around Wellington this circuit, has continued to improve this season and had great rides with both horses competing in FIDYC this week. He mentioned, “I think this show was a big success, and it’s a great experience. I was very pleased with all of my tests and it gives me a better idea of areas to keep working in and improving on. All across the board (it was) very positive.”

This was the first CDI competition for Amanda Mcauliffe and the duo gained much needed experience in the international arena for them to continue exceling in the Pony divisions. “This was my first winter in Florida and my first CDI, and I’m really happy to be riding him and to have been able to compete here. It was really fun, and we have learned so much.”

Antonia Arl (BEL) and Equestricons Ziggy placed first in the FEI Junior Freestyle receiving a 74.325%. Alexandra Meghji (CAN) and Iliado II followed in second with a 70.075% and Ashleigh Conroy-Zugel (USA) and Ungaro in third earning a 66.650%.

Dana van Lierop (NED) and Equestricons Walküre finished atop the leaderboard in the FEI Young Rider Freestyle with a 77.925%, followed by Vivien Niemann (GER) and Don Vertino in second on a 73.450%, and Rosalie Bos (NED) and Equestricons Bolita rounding out the top three receiving a 72.725%.

Tina Irwin (CAN) and Fancy That have been knocking on the door of the winner’s circle the entire season at the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival and today the pair got it done with a mistake free test in the FEI Intermediaire 1 Freestyle CDI-W1*, presented by Michael & Roz Collins. The duo edged out Charlotte Jorst (USA) and Kastels Adventure with a 74.375% to take the win. Jorst finished in second with a 74.350% and Silva Martin (USA) came in third aboard Aesthete receiving a 72.550%.

Irwin and Fancy That have had an incredible season thus far at the mare’s first consistent year at Small Tour, and she has continued to impress. “This is our first CDI season and she’s green to the level, so we started our way building her up,” she said. “I felt that with every show she had been getting better and better and this is really just the icing on the cake.”

Irwin, who was selected to Canada’s second team for the Stillpoint Farm FEI Nations Cup CDIO3* aboard Fancy That, is looking forward to representing Canada as she pursues her ultimate goal of competing on home soil in Toronto at the Pan American Games. “That is really the long term goal for us right now. I don’t ever look at the lists because I don’t want to know where we stand, but we continue to get better with each competition and I’m confident that we can make that happen,” she remarked.

The duo have been together for quite some time, as “Fancy” was originally brought to Irwin as a sale project who ended up staying through the ownership of client Christine Faux, who also rides the horse but does not compete. “It’s a really cool relationship and partnership we have. I can’t ever give enough thank yous to Christine who has been a huge supporter of our career together, making sure that we get the best of everything. This wouldn’t be possible without her,” smiled Irwin.

Today served as an emotional first win for the pair at the CDI level as several of Irwin’s clients, including Faux, were on hand to witness the victory. “We’ve worked so hard with her, and she has so many incredible highlights. Her pirouettes are unbelievable and keep getting better,” said Irwin. “The support I have received down here is incredible, and I know there is a lot to come from her in the future.”

Charlotte Jorst (USA) capped an incredible final week at AGDF 10 for Kastel Denmark, as the team prepares to fly home to the West Coast this week. Jorst and “Adventure” nearly swept the Small Tour this week and she was delighted with their second place finish today in the Freestyle. “This whole season has been a dream. I can’t believe that we actually did it. I have learned so much and have made so many incredible new friends,” she said. “What is this sport about if you can’t say you’ve become friends with a whole new group of people who support you!”

The duo’s test today was beautiful with lovely expression and fluidity, which has helped them continue to earn marks well into the 70s. “I was so pleased with him today. I know he was tired from the past few days of competition and the heat, but he really gave me everything I asked for, which is why he’s so amazing.” With three top finishes this week in the Small Tour to end their competition season here at AGDF, Jorst is an inspiration to Adult Amateurs everywhere working to compete at the top levels of the sport.

Jorst and her string of talented mounts will head back to Reno, NV, and compete at several West Coast CDIs in the coming months before Pan American Games selections, for which she hopes to be a contender with “Adventure.” “That is the goal and I know that he needs a break from showing,” she said. “We’ve had so much great experience here and now he’s confident and consistent, which was the goal going into this season.”

Bateson Chandler and Alcazar Capture Their First Win of AGDF Season in FEI Grand Prix Special

Wellington, FL – March 14, 2015 – Katherine Bateson Chandler (USA) and Alcazar performed a lovely test to win the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival (AGDF) FEI Grand Prix Special CDI-W3*, presented by Today’s Equestrian and Diane & George Fellows, on a score of 71.255%. It was determined that Cesar Parra (USA) and Van the Man placed second after tying with Sweden’s Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven aboard Divertimento on a score of 70.569%. The final day of competition at AGDF 10 concludes tomorrow with Florida International Dressage Youth Championship classes along with the FEI Intermediaire 1 Freestyle CDI-W1*, presented by Michael and Roz Collins.

Bateson Chandler was elated with Alcazar tonight, and it seems the two have truly hit their stride with great performances in both the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Special this week. “He was great. He’s been a tricky horse in a lot of ways, and it has taken him a while to get over his own show nerves and let go,” she explained. “It has always been a tension thing with him, and he’s a very hot horse. He has his own show nerves, and I’ve had to work through that and this seems like finally it all came together. The relief is overwhelming.”

Alcazar, who is still very green at the Grand Prix level, has showed Bateson Chandler that he has all of the talent in the world, which is why she has chosen to be careful and not push him out of his comfort zone too quickly. “I think he’s a very complete horse and is going to have a lot of highlight movements in the future. His passage and piaffe are going to be quite special,” she commented. “He’s changed so much over the past few months and I think he also has a great hind end and his changes are ultimately going to be very good too.”

The pair continues to bond and Bateson Chandler noted that Alcazar is a mentally very sharp; she always has to stay one step ahead of the game with him. The pair has booked a flight back across the Atlantic to England where Bateson Chandler summers at Carl Hester’s training facility. “We really try to make decisions about his future as a team, and I have to give a huge thank you to (owner) Jane (Clark) for sticking by us. We had a lot of rough patches. She’s given me so many opportunities, we call it ‘Team Clark,’ and having that much support is really incredible,” she said.

Cesar Parra had two solid tests with Van the Man this week, placing sixth in a very large Grand Prix class this past Thursday and taking home a second in the Special today. The pair, who has been training diligently at home, was rewarded for their dedication this week. “He has been such a challenging ride for me, probably the most challenging in my life. He’s really become a different horse and we’ve seen a huge transformation in him, which is why we waited until the end of the season to bring him out,” remarked Parra. “He’s been great and I decided to stay home and do my homework because he knows the movements, but he was very insecure and it seemed to be too challenging, so we decided to take a step back.”

Parra continued to work on a routine with “Van” to help the horse relax and not become too over stimulated by different atmospheres. “The main thing we did was work in a routine each day. We gave him exposure to other things and tried to keep him as happy and healthy as you can. He gets a lot of time out of the stall, and he’s really changed. I really need to thank my groom, Jennifer Mandracia. She’s dedicated so much time to him in the past year to help him come out of his shell,” he expressed.

Both pairs will compete at the final week of AGDF competition in two weeks in the CDI 3* that will accompany the CDIO 3*.

Along with the FEI Grand Prix Special, several classes contributing towards the Florida International Dressage Youth Championships took place today, giving youth riders from around the world a chance to compete against each other in Wellington. Amanda Mcaullife (USA) and Da Kiekste won the FEI Pony Individual class, sponsored by The Axel Johnson Group, with a 65.683%. Antonia Arl (BEL) and Equestricons Ziggy placed first in the FEI Junior Individual, sponsored by Equisafe, receiving a 72.711%. Dana van Lierop (NED) and Equestricons Walküre scored an incredible 74.868% in the FEI Young Rider Individual class, sponsored by Yeguada de Ymas, for the win. All four of the divisions for the Florida International Dressage Youth Championships will have their presentations on Sunday morning to honor the winner and top riders in this year’s edition.

Laura Graves and Verdades Impress with Another Win in AGDF 10 FEI Grand Prix Freestyle

Wellington, FL – March 13, 2015 – It was another spectacular evening for Laura Graves (USA) and Verdades, as the duo won the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival’s “Friday Night Stars” FEI World Cup Qualifier Grand Prix Freestyle CDI-W3* presented by Today’s Equestrian and Diane & George Fellows. Lisa Wilcox (USA) aboard Pikko del Cerro HU placed second with a 76.075%, and Lars Petersen (DEN) and Mariett finished in third receiving a 74.550%. Competition will continue tomorrow at AGDF with several classes in the Florida International Dressage Youth Championships as well as the FEI Grand Prix Special CDI-W3*.

The crowd went wild for Graves and Verdades after they finished their performance and the best is yet to come from this duo. Working closely with Robert Dover and Debbie McDonald, Graves has fine-tuned several areas of her routine that she feels she could still improve upon. She explained, “We’ve tweaked some things a bit in the past few days as a group, like getting that piaffe right on the spot, and I felt really confident in there today and it was amazingly fun to ride.”

Watch the winning ride for Laura and Verdades! Video courtesy of Campfield Videos.

Wilcox and Pikko del Cerro HU have had somewhat of a roller-coaster season here at AGDF, but when the pair is on they’re successful. Wilcox though, has remained patient throughout and is elated with the consistent performances the duo put in at both AGDF9 and AGDF10 Grand Prix Freestyles. “It’s the second time we’ve ridden that choreography, and he absolutely loves it. He’s so engaged in it, and there’s not a minute he has free. It really shined through this weekend. He had no mistakes and everything will continue to get more crisp and more powerful,” she commented.

Petersen and Mariett concluded their 2015 AGDF run with a third place finish tonight in the Grand Prix Freestyle. Mariett and Petersen amassed an incredible amount of wins and top finishes this season and the mare has earned a great break before hopefully gearing up to attend FEI World Cup Finals in Las Vegas in April. “I’m happy for Mariett with how she did. It’s a lot of shows and it’s a long season for her, but I’m so happy with all of our performances this season.”

All three riders will now look towards World Cup Finals, except Graves who was also selected to represent the United States on one of two teams in the Large Tour at the Stillpoint Farm FEI Nation’s Cup at AGDF 12. The duo will continue to iron out pieces of their routine and expect an ever better ride in two weeks. “We’re working on the quality in the passage half-passes. It was something we snuck into the routine before the World Equestrian Games,” she revealed. “It happened a little bit then and now it’s happening more, so hopefully by Nations Cup it will be a more of a real passage half-pass and by World Cup Finals it will hopefully be very exciting to watch.”

Gary Rockwell, Judge at C from the United States, was pleased with the number of consistently smooth rides throughout the night. He noted, “The judging gets better when the rides are good and usually we all agree if the rides are smooth and accurate tests. Everyone tonight had a good ride and the quality was very high, truly just an overall enjoyable evening.”

The sponsors for the AGDF 10 Large Tour, Ashley Holzer of Today’s Equestrian and Diane Fellows, were both on hand at the press conference, delighted that the night was such a success. Holzer and Dressed in Black placed fourth in the class. “Sponsoring something so wonderful as this venue and these events brings together horses and riders from around the world and makes them available for the public to see,” said Holzer. “I think it is so important that we support our own sport and that we all, as riders, do our part and sponsor events like this, if we can, to make it an even better event. I’m so glad to be a part of it and to be able to support it.”

Fellows, a longtime supporter of Holzer, agreed with the sentiment and is so proud of where the event has come. “We are so excited to say that we’re a part of this and to see how AGDF has grown over the years,” she said. “Sponsorship is a joy; owning a horse and watching a talented rider bring your horse to this level is so exciting, and I would tell anyone who is able to: ‘Sponsor a horse, a rider, a venue and come watch and enjoy.’ It really enhances your life.”

Allyn Mann of Adequan®, title sponsor for the entire AGDF series, continues to be impressed with the atmosphere and competition at each Friday night event and gave his utmost respect to the riders and sponsors. “It’s people like Ashley and Diane that make an event like this happen and to all of the owners who make this sport what it is; they’re really the backbone and without them none of us would be sitting here,” he commented. “It’s a blessing to be involved in the sport and to watch beautiful animals and riders, and we’re so glad that we can help to continue making this event even better.”

Numerous awards were given out throughout the night as Charlotte Jorst received the “Winner of the Prix St. George Owner’s Award” presented by Jill Irving for her win aboard Kastels Adventure. Adrienne Lyle accepted the “Best Horse Owner for Overall Highest Score” presented by Jill Irving, on behalf of Pam Jones. The Best Horse Owner Award for the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle presented by Wellington Equestrian Realty was given to Laura Graves for her win aboard Verdades. The pair also picked up the Adequan® High Score Award for the Grand Prix Freestyle presented by Allyn Mann.

Charlotte Jorst (USA) and Kastels Adventure continued their fairytale run at AGDF 10 with a win today in the FEI Intermediaire 1, presented by Michael & Roz Collins. The pair, who has steadily improved throughout circuit, continues to add to their remarkable 2015 season at AGDF, and Jorst’s infectious smile brightens the day for everyone on the grounds. The pair won the class on a 72.868% followed by Shelly Francis (USA) and Rubinio at 71.395%, with Brittany Fraser (CAN) and All In finishing third with a 71.132%.

AGDF 10 continues to play host to the Florida International Dressage Youth Championships this week, and the competition is heating up as both Team and Individual classes are underway at the AGDF grounds. Juan Matute, Jr. (ESP) took home the win in yesterday’s FEI Junior Team competition aboard Dhannie Ymas with a 71.297%. Chase Hickok (USA) and Sagacious HF took first in the FEI U-25 Intermediaire II on a 70.421% as well as the FEI Young Rider Grand Prix receiving a 69.767%. Amanda Mcauliffe (USA) and Da Kiekste won the FEI Pony Team class today receiving a 63.590%. Rising European star Dana van Lierop (NED) captured the win in the large FEI Young Rider Team class with Equestricons Walküre.

Competition will continue at AGDF tomorrow with several classes contributing to the Florida International Dressage Youth Championships, sponsored by Pana Cavallo, Hampton Green Farm, and Dressage4Kids, as well as the FEI Grand Prix Special CDI-W3*, presented by Today’s Equestrian and Diane and George Fellows. A Lucky Winner Will “Dress for Success” at America’s Equestrians Got Talent Finale

At the “America’s Equestrians Got Talent” Finale at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival, The Horse of Course will auction off this “Dress for Success” outfit, worth approximately $4,000 (Photo courtesy of JRPR)

Wellington, FL (March 12, 2015) – “I live my life for dressage,” said Beth Haist, the CEO of The Horse of Course. “I can’t imagine a better cause than to get our riders to the Olympics, to the Pan American games, and to everywhere else where they can compete for the U.S.” The Horse of Course’s next endeavor to help its beloved dressage riders succeed is to provide a generous donation — worth approximately $4,000 — to “America’s Equestrians Got Talent,” a competition presented by the United States Equestrian Team Foundation (USET Foundation). The unique, exciting competition serves as a fundraiser to send riders to the world’s prestigious show rings. The finale of America’s Equestrians Got Talent will take place at the Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida at the VIP tent and in the international arena, on March 15. This marks the event’s third year.

The Horse of Course’s donation to America’s Equestrians Got Talent takes the form of a “Dress for Success” package that will be available for auction. The package includes a helmet, a shadbelly, a show shirt, britches, an Otto Schumacker belt, boots, and a stock tie. “It’s the perfect outfit from head to toe,” said Haist. This fabulous prize package will help the USET Foundation support dressage riders, as well as provide one lucky rider with an incredible show outfit. “The money raised will benefit the High Performance riders and teams for the upcoming International events, the World Cup, and the Pan American Games,” explains Anne Cizadlo from the USET Foundation. “If the winner of the Talent show is from a discipline other than dressage, then 10% of the money raised will go to that performers sport. Additionally, a percentage of the proceeds from this event will be distributed among the eight International disciplines sponsored by USET.”

The “America’s Equestrians Got Talent” competition is a fun, interactive event that allows the audience to get in on the action by voting for their favorite talented performer. “Everyone on site will be able to vote from their phones for a $5 donation to help pick the winner of the night,” said Cizadlo. “General admission tickets are available in the bleachers and for standing room so that everyone can attend and watch the show from the sidelines. It will also be live streamed so that folks can watch at home.” The Wellington community may be accustomed to seeing these top riders competing on horseback in the winter show series, but this is a unique opportunity to see them competing with a song and a microphone, instead! Everyone is encouraged to get a ticket to watch these equestrian superstars become stars of the stage, as well.

The Horse of Course is a full-service tack shop located in the historic downtown of Claremore, Oklahoma. The shop carries tack and show clothing for the English rider, creating a one-stop location for tack and apparel for both dressage and hunter/jumper equestrians. The Horse of Course also has an online shop so that even more riders can benefit from the quality items and attentive customer service that the store has to offer. Currently, the store’s mobile tack shop is at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival to show its continued support of dressage and provide equestrians with everything they could need before entering the show ring. Graves and Verdades Amaze with a Top Score in AGDF 10 FEI Grand Prix

Laura Graves and Verdades. Photo copyright SusanJStickle.com.

Wellington, FL – March 12, 2015 – Laura Graves (USA) and Verdades will clearly be a force to be reckoned with this season, as the duo continues to improve and impress. In just their second show back since the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) this past August, the pair scored a remarkable 76.680% in the FEI Grand Prix CDI-W 3*, presented by Today’s Equestrian and Diane and George Fellows, to start competition in the Large Tour off with a bang at Week 10 of the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival. Lars Petersen (DEN) and Mariett placed second with a 72.500%, and Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven (SWE) and Benetton Dream captured third, receiving a 70.760%. The highlight class, “Friday Night Stars” FEI Grand Prix Freestyle, will begin tomorrow night at 7pm at The Stadium at Palm Beach International Equestrian Center.

The test was a big step in the right direction for Graves and Verdades, as they knocked their competition rust off last week at AGDF 9. “This was much better for us tonight than it was last week. I think we kind of felt like we were rookies last week, even with our experience last year,” commented Graves. “Tonight I felt like we are actually headed where we want to be, and I’m hopeful that at Nations Cup we will see a Grand Prix test that is even a little bit tighter.”

The pair took home the win in the FEI Grand Prix Freestyle last week but still felt there was more to improve upon in the ring. “We went back home to our farm in Orlando and I, just all by myself, said, ‘Where do we get this feeling?’ I figured it out over those two days. They were necessary for me,” she explained. “I think when you know you’re confident in your own mind then you can take the advice of your trainers. When it is coming from so many different places and you’re on so many different pages, you get caught up and forget to ride.”

The pair’s test was the highest scored ride in an FEI Grand Prix this season at AGDF, and Graves hopes that consistency will continue with them for the rest of the season. “He was really with me through the half-halts today and I know that we still leave a good 5-10% in the warm-up, so there will come a day when we bring it all,” she smiled.

Lars Petersen and Mariett are veterans on the circuit this season, and the mare will get a long vacation after this weekend’s competition. “This is a long circuit, and I’m really happy with how she’s been. I’ve done a lot of shows and she is not as fresh as she was in February and she has really earned her time off,” he said. “With her getting older I need to be careful of what I do with her and make sure that we don’t do too much. You always get smarter by the end.”

Vilhelmson-Silfven had a beautiful ride aboard Benetton Dream in just the young stallion’s fourth FEI Grand Prix test to date. As she continues to work through the test, it improves and he is clearly becoming more comfortable in the ring. “I am extremely happy with him today. He’s continued to get better and better with each show. With this short week in between the two competitions I was a bit worried, but he handled it well,” she commented. “He lost a little bit of power towards the end, but that’s because he still isn’t strong enough. I couldn’t ask for anything more from him, and I don’t want to ask for anything more right now.” Vilhelmson-Silfven and her team will head back to Sweden next Wednesday and will continue to compete in Europe this summer.

Competition at the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival continues with the Florida International Dressage Youth Championships throughout the week and the highlight “Friday Night Stars” FEI Grand Prix Freestyle, presented by Today’s Equestrian and Diane and George Fellows, tomorrow night at 7 pm. Charlotte Jorst Fulfills Life-Long Dream aboard Kastels Adventure with First CDI Win at AGDF

Florida International Dressage Youth Championships Begin This Week

Wellington, FL – March 11, 2015 – Charlotte Jorst (USA) and Kastels Adventure achieved something most Adult Amateurs only dream of, when the duo placed first in the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival’s (AGDF) Week 10 FEI Prix St. Georges CDI-W 1* class presented by Mike and Roz Collins, a class that boasted more than 40 entries. Jorst and Kastels Adventure won the class on a 71.842%, followed by Shelly Francis (USA) and Rubinio with a 71.605% and Tina Irwin (CAN) aboard Fancy That in third receiving a 70.553%. Competition at AGDF continues tomorrow with a very large FEI Grand Prix CDI-W 3* class presented by Today’s Equestrian and Diane and George Fellows beginning at 2:45 pm.

Jorst and “Adventure” have been paired for three years now, as Jorst found the 2005 Dutch Warmblood gelding on a small farm in The Netherlands and decided to add him to her growing string of horses. “Adventure” has steadily improved under Jorst this season and has been incredibly consistent in the Small Tour classes. “Over the weeks, he’s just gotten better and better and he has gained so much confidence and he’s been so fun to ride,” she smiled. “I put my hands down and let him do his job and he’s doing it. He just dances now and every movement seems effortless.”

Strength has been a major component in the pair’s success so far this season, as “Adventure” was coming off of a lengthy rest period due to injury. “When we got here, we focused on getting his strength and confidence back in the ring and now I think he has it. He knows he’s a super star. You want their eyes to light up when you go in the ring, and that’s how he is now,” she commented.

Confidence has not only played a factor in the success of “Adventure” in the ring, but has positively influenced Jorst’s riding. “The repetition of it all has really helped me, and doing something every week has been so valuable,” she smiled. “This has been amazing, and it is truly indescribable to me. I’ve worked for something like this my entire life and then it happens, and it is so special. I feel so much more confident, and you can tell in the way that I am riding.”

Jorst, who has always dreamed big, consistently works towards being competitive in CDI classes as an Adult Amateur and continues to set goals for her impressive group of horses. As for the future, remaining competitive at the highest levels is the ultimate goal. “I would love to do the Pan-American Games with him if he continues to do better and better like he did today, then that is something that I think is within reach,” said Jorst. “Otherwise I will take him and some of the other horses to Europe to compete them there in the summer. I’ve never done that either and it is something I would love to do.”

The 2015 Florida International Dressage Youth Championships will begin this week at AGDF, highlighting some of the best rising talent in the world, giving them a unique competition experience against their peers. The event, sponsored by Hampton Green Farm, Pana Cavallo, and Dressage4Kids, has welcomed competitors from around the country and the globe to compete in FEI Pony, Junior, Young Rider, and U-25 classes on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, with the awards presentations on Sunday morning.

“In the three years we’ve been running this show, it has gotten bigger and bigger,” said Lendon Gray, President of Dressage4Kids. “This was a group effort, and we are so thankful to have Kim Boyer of Hampton Green Farm and the Davis family of Pana Cavallo behind it with us.”

Four of the riders in this year’s Championships spoke at a press conference and rider informational meeting about their experiences competing and what they look forward to this week.

Nicolette von Leuwen, trainer of the two Dutch riders competing in the championships this week, Rosalie Bos and Dana van Lierop, said that opportunities like these continue to help grow the sport and the quality of riders pursuing the upper levels. “The show here is amazing. It’s a dream come true for these riders to have this experience in the U.S., and this competition is so well organized. It has been great for the girls to meet new riders, and it’s great to see how open everyone is here to learning.”

Vivian Niemann (GER) plans to take advantage of the opportunity to compete against the best in the U.S., but also enjoy her time in Wellington. “It’s amazing to ride here because there are so many different shows and riders, but I can say that we never have weather like this,” she smiled. “These rings are beautiful, and it’s really important to have fun while you’re competing because that is what is beautiful about the sport.”

In a unique situation, Asia Ondaatje-Rupert (USA) will ride in the Pony division for the third year in a row, but will also be competing in the Junior division with a new horse. “I got my Junior horse last winter, and I’ve always had a little bit of difficulty with my pony because he is very tough to ride,” said Ondaatje-Rupert. “Competing in the Pony classes has really helped me prepare for moving up to Juniors. I’ve become a better rider for doing the Pony classes, and I found that it was easier riding my horse because I was able to handle situations more quickly from my experience with my pony.”

Ashley Conroy Zugel (USA) switched from the jumper ring to the dressage arena and has pursued the sport ever since. Competing last year on her jumper-turned-dressage horse, Conroy Zugel feels confident for the 2015 competition, competing as a Junior. “The first time I competed here it was on my jumper horse who I trained into a dressage horse, and now I’m riding an actual dressage horse. I have a better understanding of the test, and my goal is to be accurate and keep him in front of my leg,” she explained. “I think this is a great experience for all of the riders and most shows you don’t have the chance to have all four divisions together at one time.”

Reigning Overall Champion from 2014, Tanya Strasser-Shostak (CAN), will be competing two horses this week, with her Young Rider horse and her more experienced U-25 mount. Strasser-Shostak, who is aiming at the Adequan FEI North American Junior Young Rider Championships (NAJYRC) in Lexington, KY this July, will be using this week as preparation for making a run at NAJYRC. “You won’t get an atmosphere like this anywhere else, and it’s really important to take advantage of an opportunity like this. I also think that having the European riders here really helps you to ride better and gives you something to work towards,” she commented.

Chris Von Martels Takes FEI Intermediaire 1 Freestyle

Wellington, FL – March 8, 2015 – Today was an exciting day at the Adequan® Global Dressage Festival (AGDF), host of the Week 9 Palm Beach Dressage Derby’s final day of competition. For the first time at AGDF, a Derby Exhibition class was organized, providing a unique opportunity for spectators and fans to further appreciate the sport of dressage. Adrienne Lyle (USA) ultimately won the class, followed by Christoph Koschel (GER), Karen Pavicic (CAN), and Lars Petersen (DEN) respectively.

The class, formatted like a true Derby, paired riders to compete on the same horse in back-to-back tests (Koschel/Pavicic and Lyle/Petersen), with the rider receiving the highest score moving forward to the second round. Riders were given a five-minute familiarization period with the horses before performing an FEI Prix St. Georges level test. “Last year when I heard the Palm Beach Dressage Derby would be held at our venue, I had been told about the history of the show and I thought that a Derby needs a Derby (class). That’s why I set this up this year to test out how it would work,” said Thomas Baur, Director of Sport at AGDF. “It was great that we had four top riders join us, and we will work on something for next year to make the Derby class a larger part of the week.”

Christoph Koschel received the highest overall score of the class, with a 71.421% aboard Kelly Layne’s Von Primaire, which ultimately moved him to the second round to compete against Adrienne Lyle, who received a 66.579% aboard Melody Jackson’s Fortune and Fame, pushing her into the final round of competition. Lyle won the final round of the Derby, scoring a 66.816% aboard Leah Wilson’s Zango with Koschel finishing just behind on a 64.053%.

“I think that this is something for a Saturday night. It would be really fun,” said Baur. Koschel added that these competitions are fun for spectators, and there are several ways to make the class more difficult for riders. “These competitions are great because you get to see horses being ridden by different riders and like Thomas said, a derby needs a derby. They’re very popular in Germany. It would be great to add some sort of Freestyle element to the class as the final round. It would be something really nice for the crowd and make it more challenging for the riders.”

Lyle, who entered the International Ring at AGDF for the first time this season to participate in the class, was thrilled with her win and expressed the most sincere gratitude to the owners who volunteered their horses for the competition. “I was very excited when I received the invitation to compete, and it’s great fun. Thank you so much to the owners for giving us this opportunity. It was incredibly generous of them, and they put a huge amount of trust in our hands to make sure their horses had a positive experience in the ring.”

Lyle and Koschel both started the first round on large warmblood geldings, proceeding to ride the smaller Zango, a feisty P.R.E. stallion, who made both riders work for their scores. “I rode two completely different horses today. We had one bigger mover and then one little firecracker of a horse, so it was really interesting. You get a couple of minutes to warm-up and figure them out, and then you have to go in there and ride to the best of your ability. It’s a great challenge,” remarked Lyle.

The planning for next year’s event has already begun and the extra preparation time will allow Thomas Baur and his team to create a truly spectacular event. “With more time I think we can really make this class an important piece of this competition,” he stated. Karen Pavicic agreed and said the event was well received considering its inaugural year. She noted, “A lot of people were asking about it and I think there was a lot of interest, which will continue to grow as people understand what it is and the format. People were asking about live-stream and wanting to watch, which is a great thing to know for next year.”

Chris Von Martels (CAN) and Zilverstar added another FEI Intermediaire 1 Freestyle to their list of wins this year at AGDF. The pair scored a 74.950% to take home the win. Fellow Canadian Christilot Boylen and Donatella 79 finished behind Von Martels in second with a 72.050% and Silva Martin (USA) and Aesthete followed in third receiving a 71.950%. The FEI Intermediaire 1 Freestyle class was presented by Peacock Ridge.

Von Martels and “Zilver” have made a tremendous statement this circuit with their ability to perform consistently. The duo placed second this week in the large FEI Prix St. Georges class and also won the AGDF 5 I-1 Freestyle as well. “It was another fantastic week for us. He had a great result in the Prix St. Georges and actually yesterday in the I1 he was very good; we just had a big costly error, which we lost points for, but that happens. He’s been so consistent, and I’m thrilled,” he said.

The pair is steadily working towards their goal of representing Canada at the 2015 Pan American Games to be held in Toronto later this summer and will compete for Team Canada at the AGDF 12 Stillpoint Farm FEI Nation’s Cup in a few short weeks. “For myself and all of my horses, we know the areas we need to focus on in terms of training but with Zilver in particular, he’s developed a lot more strength and confidence. Now his real potential is showing, and his quality is shining,” said Von Martels.

Something Special C, 2000 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Ferro x Gicara II x Beaujolais) who placed 6th in yesterday’s FEI Grand Prix Special, ridden by Adrienne Pots, is owned by James & Elizabeth Bramsen.

AGDF 10 will host the Florida International Dressage Youth Championships beginning this week, highlighting the riding of young dressage riders from around the world, alongside FEI CDI 1*/3* competition. Classes will begin on Wednesday, March 11, and continue through Sunday, March 15. For more information on AGDF, please visit www.globaldressagefestival.com.
