Sutherlin, OR — You’ve devoted your resources – financial and energetic – to producing quality sport horses with hopes that they will compete at the highest levels of dressage, jumping, eventing or driving. One of the best tools for breeders, whether you have one mare or a herd, is the keuring, or inspection of breeding stock. You can receive invaluable advice and feedback on your breeding and training decisions from respected authorities. Perhaps your horse will be rewarded with high scores or a predicate, potentially increasing his or her value. There are also the networking and marketing opportunities that can only occur when like minded horse people get together. The 2011 KWPN of North America (Royal Dutch Warmblood Studbook) keuring tour kicks off next month and has 11 locations throughout North America. Breeders, owners and spectators are welcome at all events.
The KWPN-NA keurings offer inspections for both young and mature horses. Foals are examined for correct movement, conformation and type. The jury comments on each foal, making the process educational for all who attend. Mature horses are evaluated on conformation, movement and jumping (if applicable for their type) and are assessed in-hand and moving freely. Horses are able to advance to the studbook, earn predicates and compete in the DG Bar Cup (dressage 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old) or Iron Spring Farm Cup (jumping 4-, 5-, and 6-year-old) Championships.

“We always present our horses to the KWPN-NA,” says Gwyneth McPherson of Pineland Farms. “The feedback is the reason we present them. While we want to be successful, we realize it can only happen through education. Every keuring we have been to gives us a better idea of how to accomplish our goals.” Pineland Farms bred the 2010 Rabobank Breeder’s Award winning mare Cadence (Idocus crown x Vera by Don Primaire). The mare has also successfully competed in dressage and received the 2010 USDF Materiale Horse of the Year award for three-year-old fillies.
Jacqueline van den Bosch, of Bosch Farms in Red Deer, Alberta, is another breeder who believes in the importance of the keuring process. “The best part of the KWPN-NA keuring is the riding test because it shows the capability of the horse,” she explains. Their mare, Blossom keur (Lupicor x Vanilla Shake by Larino keur), also received many accolades in the past year, including winning the KWPN-NA Top Five Award for 3- to 7-year-old jumper mares.
The 2011 jury includes luminaries from the Netherlands — Bart Henstra and Toine Hoefs — as well as North America’s preeminent KWPN horse experts: Faith Fessenden, Deborah P. Harrison DVM, and Lana Sneddon.
Bart has been a KWPN jury member since 2003. His Stal Hentstra is a breeding and training facility, which produces foals for both dressage and jumping each year. Bart is also an active dressage competitor at the ZZ (Grand Prix) level. His duties include serving as the KWPN studbook inspector for Friesland and judging the mare shows and Paardendagen (horse days). He recently was part of a delegation to promote KWPN horses in Russia.
Toine Hoefs is an internationally recognized sport horse expert and breeder. He has been a licensed KWPN breed judge and inspector for more than 15 years. He has judged at some of the world’s most prestigious shows, including the Pavo Cup and Dressage at Devon. Toine has extraordinary talent for spotting gifted foals and youngsters, such as the approved stallions Juventus, Uptown, Washington and Adamo, as well as competition horses, including Sagacious.
Faith Fessenden has bred sport horses for 30 years in both Europe and the USA. She was a founding member of the North American Department of the WPN, now the KWPN-NA. She has produced top keuring horses, as well as sport horses for dressage and eventing. Faith is a USEF Dressage Sport Horse Breeding judge and a member of the U.S. Eventing Association’s Future Event Horse task force.
Deborah P. Harrison, DVM is not only a veterinarian, but she has competed in dressage, hunter/jumper and eventing. She’s been a breeder of KWPN horses for more than 30 years, and was also a founding member of the KWPN-NA. She is a licensed breeding class judge in the Netherlands and is a USEF dressage and sporthorse breeding class-licensed judge. Her breeding program has produced nationally and internationally ranked jumpers and dressage horses.
Lana Sneddon is a KWPN-NA jury member that has produced horses that have received numerous awards from both the KWPN and USDF. Sneddon has been involved with horses for more than 35 years and is a dressage trainer. She recently received accolades for breeding, training and riding her own DG Bar Cup Champion.
Explains Willy Arts, chairman of the KWPN-NA: “Keurings create a dynamic opportunity for breeders to receive advice on the selection of mares and stallions that are likely to produce horses that meet the standards for the Grand Prix or highest level in each of the breeding directions.”
