Tamra Smith stormed to victory with Mar de Amor by nearly 14 points in the CIC3* at the Twin Rivers Ranch in California. The pair won the dressage and never looked back, adding just a few time faults on both the cross country and the show jumping. Their final score was 53.6. Barbara Crabo and Eveready II were second on a score of 67.3 after picking up 13.6 time faults on the cross country, and Pam Fisher and Sea Lion rounded out the top three on the strength of a clear show jumping round.

Jolie Wentworth and Governess scored a win in the CIC1*, capitalizing on a clear show jumping round to win by three-tenths of a point over Olympic Silver medalist Gina Miles, who was second on her dressage mark of 50.9 with Sunspite Patronus. Erin Kellerhouse and Parfait were third with a score of 52.4 after one rail in the final phase kept them from the top spot.

In the Revere CCI2*, the Gold medalist from the 2009 Adequan FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships presented by Gotham North won another close division  on the colorful paint, Project Runway. Their final score of 54.4 gave them a narrow lead over Anna Collier and Uppercrust D, who finished on a score of 54.9. Dressage winner Lauren Billys on Ballingowan Ginger were third after picking up time faults on the cross country.

THE Double HH Ranch Celebrates Ten Years of Barrel Racing with Great Incentives

“Thank you so much to all of the dedicated barrel racers who have continued to support our jackpot year after year,” says owner and producer John Hagaman. The Double HH Ranch in Kings Mountain, NC begins the 2011 Season in celebration of 10 years of weekly barrel racing April through October.

Hagaman has dedicated much of his life to offering quality barrel racing events to the west Charlotte, NC community. “It has always been important to run a fair show, with consistent ground, professional staff and great food,” says Hagaman, “We do everything we can to ensure a night of quality family entertainment and competition.”

THE Double HH Ranch Series (DHHR Series) celebrates their 10th Year of Barrel Racing by adding some new incentives to keep the shows running quickly and to help the barrel racers to continue to show in this tough economy. Number one in Hagaman’s mind each week is running the show quickly and getting the youth riders home at a decent hour. This year he is offering a Weekly $25 Fuel Card Drawing to the first 25 exhibition entries each week.

Equestrian Sport Productions Spring 6 Horse Show: April 19-23, 2011

Wellington, FL – April 26, 2011 – The Equestrian Sport Productions (ESP) Spring Circuit held its sixth show on April 19-23 with a full schedule of hunter/jumper competition. The popular circuit featured three classes in the Spring 6 show: the $10,000 Pennfield Feeds Open Jumper Welcome Stake, the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Classic, and the $25,000 ESP Spring 6 Grand Prix.

Up and coming jumper stars ruled the International Arena this past week. In the $25,000 Spring 6 Grand Prix, 13-year-old Victoria Colvin of Loxahatchee, FL, scored her first grand prix win with Monsieur Reverdy, owned by Rivers Edge. She beat a field of 32 entries with a double clear finish in 36.755 seconds. Quentin Judge (24) and HH Sandor were second in 37.143 seconds, while 16-year-old Christina Kelly and Camirage, owned by Diamond Edge Farm, were third in 37.261 seconds.

Electrolytes: Why Optimal Horse Health Hangs in the Balance, Not the Quantity

Recent research suggests a cure for equine anhidrosis, tying-up and more, based on findings that such negative effects on horse health result when electrolytes don’t always perform as they’re supposed to.

Mesa, AZ (Apr. 26, 2011) – Electrolytes are involved in every physiological process in the horse’s body including hydration, blood pH and maintaining normal muscle function. The typical equine diet of hay and grain usually provides all the electrolytes a horse needs but good health depends on how those electrolytes are balanced.

Researchers are now focusing more attention on electrolyte activity, rather than just level. When comparing healthy horses to unhealthy ones, they’ve found that simply providing electrolytes does not guarantee they’ll work properly. Abnormalities in electrolyte activity have been linked to tying-up and equine anhidrosis.

In Veterinary Dermatology [1], researchers from Glasgow Caledonian University and Michigan State University published findings that anhidrotic horses secrete chloride ions differently than normal, healthy horses do. Defective electrolyte transport mechanisms in the gland are likely responsible.

Triumphant Todd Flies to Kentucky in Hunt for Further HSBC FEI Classics Points

Lexington, KY (USA), 27 April 2011 – Mark Todd (NZL) has flown to the US for this weekend’s Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event (April 28 – May 1) in a bid to keep up momentum in the HSBC FEI Classics.

Todd interrupted celebrations for his magnificent win at Badminton last weekend and within 24 hours was on a plane en route to Kentucky, where today he will trot up NZB Grass Valley, a horse that knows its way around the Kentucky Horse Park having been a key member of New Zealand’s bronze medal team at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games last year.

Both Todd and fellow traveller Mary King (GBR), third at Badminton, have said that the lure of the generous prize-money on offer in the HSBC FEI Classics is making them plan their CCI4* seasons carefully.

King, a member of Britain’s triumphant gold medal team last year, is making a two-pronged attack: she rides her home-bred mare Kings Temptress, seventh at Burghley last year, and the exciting prospect Fernhill Urco, a horse that had clocked up useful CCI3* results before spending most of last year on the sidelines.

Other overseas visitors in the 53-strong field are former (2006) Kentucky winner Clayton Fredericks (AUS) with the German-bred mare Be My Guest, third at Burghley last year, and William Fox-Pitt (GBR) and Oliver Townend (GBR) who have three HSBC FEI Classics titles between them.

It’s a touchy subject. It’s one I’ve avoided for a long time, because it’s going to hit some nerves. But I overheard someone tearfully share that a trainer had told her she’d become too fat to ride, so I figured it was time to break the silence.

Weight. There, I said it. Human society is incredibly obsessed with body size. How many people don’t ride or stopped riding because they think they are too fat? How many people hide their talents and abilities behind a wall of shame because of their BMI (Body Mass Index)?

When I hear people talking about weight issues, it makes me so glad I’m a horse! We are expected to have a big, round “hip” and be well fleshed. Unless you’re a racehorse, it’s perfectly okay to be plump. In fact, we are “fattened up” for halter classes and viewed as healthier when we have some meat on our bones.

Why aren’t people like that?

I hear it’s mostly because of movies, TV, and magazines. Back when food was scarce and only the rich were plump, “Rubenesque” women were all the rage. But now that food is abundant for almost all people, you’re expected to be waif thin and wrinkle free if you want to be “in.” The media perpetuates this ideal simply by glorifying the skinny and the young.

Aachen Symposium to Support Growth of National and Regional Jumping Competitions

Lausanne (SUI), 26 April 2011 – The FEI, CHIO Aachen and Aachen School of Course Design (ASCD) are collaborating for the first time on a two-day Symposium, where vital expertise and knowledge will be shared to support the growth and success of national, regional, FEI 1* and 2* competitions around the world.

The Symposium – entitled “How to develop, organise and sustain national and regional Jumping Events” – will be held at Hotel Novotel in Aachen (GER) on 18-19 July 2011.

The event represents a unique opportunity to engage with leading figures in event organisation from around the world.
