Old Salem Farm Spring Welcome Day Features Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program Competition

North Salem, NY – March 19, 2014 – The Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Shows are pleased to announce that Welcome Day for the spring competitions will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2014. The Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Shows return for their 32nd year in 2014 with two weeks of exceptional equestrian sport on May 6-11 and May 13-18 at Old Salem Farm in North Salem, NY.

The Old Salem Farm Welcome Day horse show is proud to offer The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.) $2,000 Low Thoroughbred Hunter Division with prize money and ribbons from first place to sixth place. The Division will be held at a height of three feet and will consist of two over fences classes and one under saddle class.

The Champion of the Low Thoroughbred Hunter Division will be presented with the First Annual Debby Malloy Winkler Memorial Trophy, donated by the Malloy Family. The winner will have their name inscribed on this perpetual trophy, and it will remain at Old Salem Farm with winners added each year at this event. A reception will be held to celebrate this inaugural event at 12 p.m. on May 4 on the Pavilion Patio.

T.I.P. classes are offered at this year’s OSF Spring Horse Shows thanks to the support of Vivien G. Malloy. Malloy owns Edition Farm, a Thoroughbred breeding farm in Dutchess County, NY. Malloy presents the division in honor of her daughter, Debby Malloy Winkler, who showed at Old Salem Farm as a junior and passed away following a tragic fall from her horse at her home in Germany in 2011.

“When Debby was riding as a junior in the United States, we always had ex-racehorses,” Malloy explained. “It wasn’t everyone importing warmbloods like they do now. I breed Thoroughbreds, and I am constantly looking for homes for the horses that didn’t race well or that are a little injured, but are sound enough to be riding horses. I have found wonderful homes for horses in show jumping, hunters, three-day eventing, dressage, and of course trail riding. It is very important that people realize that after racing, there are a lot of other careers for Thoroughbreds.”

“I know about it because my children and I rode ex-racehorses, but it’s not in the general public’s knowledge,” Malloy continued, “So I had this idea to have a division in memory of Debby, who enjoyed them so much and knew the qualities that they have. We wanted to offer some decent prize money and try to fill a nice division at Old Salem Farm, which is where she rode a lot and competed.”

Malloy will be in attendance for the Welcome Day competition and looks forward to presenting the awards, as well as the First Annual Debby Malloy Winkler Memorial Trophy, with the help of her granddaughter Caitlin Malloy Brennan. The trophy is one that Debby won herself while competing in Europe as an international show jumper.

“Caitlin spent some summers in Germany with Debby and rode there and went to horse shows with her,” Malloy noted. “She will be at the show, and she plans to ride one of my ex-racehorses in the division. She will help me hand out ribbons and the trophy, and I am very excited to have her there with me. Hopefully we will have a nice turnout.”

Old Salem Farm welcomes the wonderful Thoroughbred placement organizations throughout the region to join us for the competition as well as the reception at 12 p.m. on May 4. It will be a fantastic opportunity to help spread the word about the many promising careers options for ‘Off the Track Thoroughbreds.’ Please contact Old Salem Farm at 914 669-5610 if you would like to participate.

To encourage the retraining of Thoroughbreds into other disciplines upon completion of careers in racing or breeding, The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.) is offering sponsorship for High Point Thoroughbred awards. You must compete in two of the three events to be eligible for the series award.

Only Thoroughbreds that have been registered with The Jockey Club or a foreign Thoroughbred studbook recognized by The Jockey Club are eligible to participate in T.I.P. classes and awards. Riders and owners must obtain a T.I.P. number for all horse/rider combinations. T.I.P. number applications are done online at www.tjctip.com. T.I.P. numbers must be provided to the horse show secretary and listed on entry blank, with the horse to be referenced by its official racing name and pedigree.

In addition to the T.I.P. competition, Welcome Day will feature a great schedule of hunter, jumper and equitation competition. The Marshall & Sterling Adult Medal, Sore No More Medal, and Bit O’ Straw Children’s and Adult Hunter Classics will be held. A Marshall & Sterling Child/Adult Jumper Classic will also be featured.

The Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Shows feature over 130 hunter and jumper classes each week, bringing together top competitors, including Olympic show jumpers, from across the country.

The show’s USEF 6* rated jumper section includes world-class competition in open, junior and amateur-owner jumpers. Each week the show will host two grand prix classes.
