WHINNY Awards to Honor Horsewoman Elizabeth Shatner

Nashville, TN – The Women’s Horse Industry Network has announced that Elizabeth Shatner has been selected as a recipient of a WHINNY award for her efforts in the horse industry.

The WHINNY awards are designed to shine the light on people who are using their high visibility to save and protect horses and to promote the horse industry through charitable efforts. Elizabeth Shatner, wife of actor William Shatner, does just that.

Born with a love of horses, Elizabeth started riding at the age of five. At the tender age of eight, she got her first horse, a Galiceno pony. By 14, she was teaching horseback riding and participating in young judging competitions with the Indiana Arabian Club, winning several national honors and a scholarship. As a part of the scholarship, she was able to attend a USEF judging clinic. It was during her time as a youth judge that she began to see the beauty of art in nature. She attended Purdue University studying equine and animal science and Butler University in Telecommunications. She eventually became a professional horse trainer.

A photo safari trip with her husband in Israel was the spark that ignited her passion for art with photography launching her in another career. She calls her art Flowrosophy, using the nature’s shapes and colors to create pieces that heal the spirit and arouse introspection. Moving back to her love of horses Elizabeth recently unveiled as part of her “Elizabeth Shatner Art by Nature” series the “Unbridled Collection”, a series of digitally painted photographs of horses she has encountered all around the world focusing on Kentucky and the role horses have played in history and their influence on culture.  Elizabeth celebrates these “horses in service” by donating portions of the proceeds from the sale of her artwork to equine-related charities.

WHINNY Awards to Honor Animal Rights Advocate Madeleine Pickens

The Women’s Horse Industry Network has announced that Madeleine Pickens has been selected to receive a WHINNY award. The awards dinner will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at the Radisson Hotel Opryland. It will be videotaped as part of a one hour special on HRTV.

“We are very happy to present this award to Madeleine. This woman not only works hard to help animals and horses but has put her money where her boots are and where her passion lives. People like Madeleine deserve to be recognized and applauded for their efforts.  We will do everything we can to help promote her and her efforts.  It definitely will be my pleasure to hand her this award,” states WHIN’s Executive Director, Catherine Masters.

Animal rights advocate Madeleine Pickens started her career in horse racing in 1983, a passion she shared with her late husband and Gulfstream Aerospace founder, Allen E. Paulson. They achieved enormous success in racing and had a total of 800 horses, including breeding and racing World Champion and U.S. Hall of Fame inductee, Cigar. They achieved much esteem for their successes racing many champion Thoroughbreds, breeding many brood mares, and creating three successful farms from the ground up. Together, they owned a breaking and training farm at Ocala and a breeding farm at Brookside North in Kentucky where many of their champions were raised. They also had one more facility in California. Madeleine managed all the business aspects, farm decisions, and race decisions for the entire operation. The Paulsons owned more than 115 winners of graded stakes races. To this day, they still hold the record for the leader of the most ‘Breeder’s Cup’ champion horses and earnings.

Today, she is still breeding a few racehorses, but adamantly opposes horse slaughter and the use of the drugs in these animals. Until that is cleared up, she won’t ever participate in the race world like she had once been.

The Women’s Horse Industry Network is pleased to announce a partnership with Speaking of Horses TV. Speaking of Horses TV CEO Wayne Williams has long been a supporter of the WHIN and WHIN’s CEO Catherine Masters has been a longtime supporter of Speaking of Horses.

They will both use their talents to develop and promote the equine industry on television. Williams is currently putting together a pilot using some of the exhibitors at the upcoming 3rd Annual Business Networking Expo being held in Nashville, Tennessee in October. The pilot is for a new program that is being pitched to HRTV. Williams already has one program on the network that will begin airing in the Fall.  Plans are to show the pilot at the event in Nashville. Williams will also be an exhibitor at the event in Nashville and the host of the WHINNY awards.

Williams and his production crew will tape all of the events at The 3rd Annual Business Networking Expo, including the 1st Annual WHINNY awards and produce a one hour special that will be broadcast on a delayed basis. The show will air on HRTV’s “Where in the Horse World Are We”. Broadcast dates will be posted on the WHIN’s website as soon as they are available.

“As a former TV producer, I know the value of getting the Women’s Horse Industry and its members on television. It’s the very best way to market their products and services and Wayne and I are working hard to make that happen. Wayne is a super capable broadcaster, someone who really cares about the equine industry and I am very pleased to partner with him and his company. It will be great to shine the light on so many wonderful people in the horse world,” states Masters.

Music Industry Veteran Bonnie Garner Wins WHINNY Award

Nashville, TN – August 3, 2011 – If you aren’t in the music industry, you may not know her name. But if you are, you know that Bonnie Garner is something special. With a career spanning more than 35+ years, this dynamo has credentials that are hard to match. She has managed stars’ careers, run a record company’s A & R department, booked venues and major television shows, managed various European, U.S. and Pacific Rim tours and help book several Farm Aids.

She was the program coordinator for the “Dick Cavett Show” in New York and was responsible for bringing several cutting edge talents into the show mix, including Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, Delaney and Bonnie, Black Panther leader Donald Cox, and Frank Zappa.

After booking legendary promoter Bill Graham on the Cavett Show, he hired her as his Executive Assistant at the Fillmore East. After it closed its doors, Columbia Records’ Clive Davis and Kip Cohen hired Garner as the only woman A & R (Artist & Repertoire) Executive in the label’s Pop Department. She worked with Delaney & Bonnie, Springsteen, Billy Joel, Dan Fogelberg, Eric Anderson and many others.

Garner accepted the challenge of setting up Columbia and Epic Records’ first Nashville Pop Division, working with Dan Fogelberg, John Hiatt, Tracy Nelson and others before transferring to Columbia/Epic’s Country Division as Director of A & R. In 1984, Bonnie was promoted to Vice President of A & R. She was the first woman to attain this position at CBS Records and one of the few in the entire music industry. Garner has helped manage the careers of Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Marty Stuart, The Highwaymen, Roger Miller, The O’Kanes and Emmylou Harris.
