WesternLincoln High Student Named Florida Horseman of the Year
Morgan Burns, a Lincoln High School Senior and student athlete, was recognized as the State of Florida’s 2010 4-H Horseman of the Year at the State Horse Show held in Tampa in July. Criteria for consideration of the prestigious title and award include more than just showing horses. It is to recognize and promote the total involvement and development of the 4-H member in all aspects of the Florida 4-H program. There are over 2600 youth involved in the Florida 4-H Horse program. Competitors have to be involved with community service, leadership projects, and be well rounded individuals. Besides submitting project books and an intensive application detailing all individual accomplishments, there is a personal interview at the University of Florida. Only 6 students from around the state made it to the interview stage. As winner of the Horseman of the Year award, Morgan received a plaque, cash and a college scholarship. Morgan has been the 4-H Area A Horse Show High Point All-Around Champion for the past five years and won National and Championship titles with the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA), and the Palomino Horse Breeders Association (PHBA). Wimpy was bred by the renowned King Ranch of South Texas. That’s just one example of the critical role ranchers and stock shows have played in the formation and growth of the American Quarter Horse industry. To spur the Quarter Horse market, the AQHA Executive Committee and staff went back to it roots in July and met with ranchers and stock show managers. In early July, the AQHA Executive Committee and staff met with more than 20 ranching representatives in Oklahoma City. Their talks focused on enhancing AQHA’s registration process; continuing to work with the various ranch horse competition groups – Ranch Horse Association of America, Stock Horse Of Texas, National Versatility Ranch Horse Association, American Stock Horse Association – by exploring consistency in rules and possibly co-sanctioned events; and investigating the concept of a Ranching Heritage Breeder Program, which likely could be an extension of the AQHA Breeder Referral Program. World’s Greatest Shootout Set for Inaugural Battle in the SaddleAmarillo, Texas – State Fair Park and the American Quarter Horse Association are pleased to announce an exciting new addition to Battle in the Saddle, the country’s newest equine event. The National Reined Cow Horse Association will host the World’s Greatest Horseman Shootout, a unique competition for exhibitors to experience the thrill of a prestigious competition that will award one talented competitor a paid entry into the 2011 World’s Greatest Horseman competition. The World’s Greatest Horseman Shootout will take place during the Battle in the Saddle competition at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City July 5-10. World’s Greatest Horseman is a yearly contest that has captured the imagination of the horse world since its inception in 1999. Exhibitors compete on the same horse, with the same bridle – in herd work, rein work, steer stopping and cow work over a series of days for a chance to make the top 10 finals. On finals day, each horse and rider show in all four events in one day to see who will win the title of World’s Greatest Horseman and join the horse show world’s most elite list of winners. Loxahatchee, FL – May 27, 2010 – The Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center (VTRC) recently returned from the Special Olympic State Equestrian Games, held May 21-22, where 16 of their top students had the opportunity to compete. This year’s competition was held at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa, FL. VTRC took home five gold medals, nine silver medals, nine bronze medals, five fourth place ribbons, two fifth place ribbons and one sixth place ribbon. The team representing VTRC included 16 riders who participated in 19 events. The events included English and western equitation, trail ride competition, dressage, and pole bending. VTRC had numerous riders compete in the level ‘A’ classes that requires them to walk, trot, and canter unassisted. Pole Bending proved to be one of the most successful events for VTRC as all of the athletes maneuvered exceptionally well through the poles. Fred Whitfield & Hunter Herrin to Compete for $10k at Battle in the Saddle Match RopingThe American Quarter Horse Journal, May 24, 2010 – A match roping between Texan Fred Whitfield and Oklahoman Hunter Herrin will be held July 9 at the inaugural Battle in the Saddle competition at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. In the Texas versus Oklahoma duel, accuracy will be the name of the game and more than state pride is on the line. The roper with the most catches will ride away with $10,000 and a pair of commemorative Battle in the Saddle spurs. Whitfield and Herrin, both professional tie-down ropers, will rope in five rounds for a $10,000 winner-take-all purse. State Fair Park and the American Quarter Horse Association have teamed up to present Battle in the Saddle, the first-of-its-kind equestrian event. The event is owned by Oklahoma State Fair Inc. and managed by AQHA and is a premier equine competition showcasing five western disciplines. Stacy Westfall to Perform in 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Opening CeremoniesMay 10, 2010 – LEXINGTON, KY – Champion rider and equine competitor Stacy Westfall will entertain audiences as she performs without a saddle or bridle on her champion horse, Roxy, in the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. Westfall, who has appeared on Ellen and is a YouTube sensation, will bring her champion reining horse, Whizards Baby Doll (“Roxy”), out of retirement to participate in the Opening Ceremonies for the world’s most prestigious equestrian competition. Artist Wayne Baize Creates Signature Painting for 2010 America’s Horse in ArtAmerica’s Horse, May 11, 2010 – America’s Horse in Art returns to the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in August, and a painting by renowned western artist Wayne Baize will be the signature piece for the third annual art show. The public is invited to the America’s Horse in Art opening, which will take place Saturday, August 14. Many of the talented artists will be at the opening and available to discuss the inspiration for their art work. Adequan U.S. Reining Team to Be Selected at Battle in the SaddleTop American reining riders will compete to represent host nation in September Oklahoma City, May 10, 2010 – The U.S. Equestrian Federation National Open Reining Championship and official United States Equestrian Team Selection Trial for the Adequan U.S. Reining Team will take place July 10 at Battle in the Saddle at Sate Fair Park in Oklahoma City.
