Slinkys Fortune Stands Out in Magnolia

The American Quarter Horse Racing Journal, February 11, 2010 – The super-consistent Slinkys Fortune, who has finished in the top two in each of his 13 starts, heads a full field of eight Louisiana-bred distance specialists over 870 yards in the $40,000 Magnolia Stakes on Saturday afternoon at Louisiana Downs.

The Henry Padgett-owned and -trained Slinkys Fortune (Dashs Slinky-Chasing A Fortune by Six Fortunes) did not begin his racing career until 2008 as a 4-year-old, but he has made up for lost time by earning $152,765 while never finishing below second place.

Slinkys Fortune returned after a three-month rest in the 870-yard Marathon Stakes on January 23 at Louisiana Downs. He made an impressive move going around his rivals to win by 2 lengths as the 13-10 favorite. That victory came against open company, so facing state-breds in the Magnolia Stakes may be a class drop for the impressive gelding. Mon Ti Rose Primed for Party Girl

The American Quarter Horse Racing Journal, February 4, 2010 – The veteran stakes mare Mon Ti Rose is well positioned to start her 2010 campaign with a stakes win when she heads the $50,000 Party Girl Stakes for Louisiana-bred distaffers on Saturday afternoon at Louisiana Downs.

Owned by Melba De La Cerda and Graciela Medina, Mon Ti Rose (Dashin Bye-Mon Ti Fleur by Mr Jess Perry) raced to top-three finishes in her latest seven starts stretching over the past year, and each of those starts has been against stakes company. The earner of $160,169 started that streak with a 1-length win in last year’s Party Girl Stakes at 2-1 odds. She finished well in the 350-yard test to get that victory over a sloppy racing surface.

She concluded her 2009 season with a second-place finish over 440 yards against the boys in the Louisiana Championship Day Classic (RG2). In that race for state-breds, she raced on the lead before giving way and was defeated by a half length.

The 5-year-old mare has made 20 career starts and finished on the board 15 times with seven wins for trainer Frank Cavazos.

The Henry Padgett-owned and -trained Shawnies Dasher (Rebel Dasher-Shawnies Pie by Pie In The Sky) is primed for the Party Girl after a win over allowance company at Louisiana Downs on January 16. The winner of eight of 20 career starts gained that 330-yard allowance win by racing to a one-half length advantage and then holding off her female rivals.

Shawnies Dasher defeated Mon Ti Rose in the 2009 Mothers Day Stakes at Delta Downs. Shawnies Dasher won at 7-1 odds over odds-on favorite Mon Ti Rose.

Guadalupe Garcia’s Ms Quick Patriot (Game Patriot-Spicy Quick Darr by Royal Quick Dash) moved up from the claiming ranks to finish second in the Harrah’s Distaff at nearly 20-1 odds on January 23. She was three-quarters of a length behind the proven stakes competitor XO Kate.

Ms Quick Patriot was claimed for $3,500 last May and won at the $10,000 claiming level two starts ago.

Jones Set for Another Big Day in Florida

The American Quarter Horse Racing Journal, January 28, 2010 – Eight-time defending national champion trainer Paul Jones is outfitted with the horses to sweep the $100,000 South Florida Derby and the $20,000 Sunshine State Stakes on Sunday afternoon at Hialeah Park.

In the 440-yard Derby, Jones is represented by fastest-qualifier Mr Brimmerton and El Niño Handicap winner Shakem Blue.

In the 220-yard Sunshine State Stakes, Jones is sending out the very quick One Tough Dude, the Ruidoso Downs 300-yard track record holder.

Gabriela Baltierrez’s Mr Brimmerton (Brimmerton-Zip N Streak by Barrett’s Bullet (TB)) rebounded from a horrid trip in the $163,000 Hialeah Laddie Futurity to set the fastest-qualifying time to the South Florida Derby. In his trial, he raced near the lead and then drew out to the three-quarter-length win in :21.843 for the quarter mile. After the Finish Line’s January Newsletter – Saving Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses and Broodmares

Dear After the Finish Line Supporters,

Happy New Year! What does the coming year have in store for the Thoroughbreds? Last year it was very difficult for people to support their Thoroughbreds and record numbers of horses were sent to auctions. Let’s keep a positive outlook for 2010. Your continued donations to After the Finish Line will enable us to tell the rescue organizations, “Yes, we can help your Thoroughbreds!”

Happy Birthday to the Thoroughbreds! As you may not know, racing Thoroughbreds celebrate their birthdays on January 1. I recently received an obituary of an ex-racehorse (barn) named Arthur who passed away two days shy of his 32nd birthday. Arthur lived long past his days on the racetrack and proved Thoroughbreds have the heart and desire to transition into other careers. He was a proud horse that knew he was loved and well cared for. After the Finish Line strives to ensure that the Thoroughbreds we support have the opportunity to live a fulfilling life in a safe environment. The Thoroughbreds fill our hearts with a feeling of love we can’t always describe. Let’s treat his passing as a celebration of life and hope other ex-racehorses could be this lucky to live a long life.

After the Finish Line accomplished more than we ever could have imagined in 2009. We awarded monthly emergency funds and yearly grants to 47 rescue organizations helping over 300 horses. We helped stallions, geldings, broodmares and a foal. We provided funding for surgery, critical care, farrier, dental and chiropractic expenses. Funding also paid for arthritis drugs for elderly broodmares, x-rays, supplements, hay & grain, winter blankets and boarding expenses. ATFL funded the rescue of neglected Thoroughbreds from breeding farms, auctions, a horse abandoned in the desert and the rescue of horses from once prominent New York owner and breeder Erinie Paragallo.

Rescue organizations caring for Thoroughbred ex-racehorses or broodmares may apply for a grant. Please contact dawn@afterthefinishline.org to request a grant application. Applications must be postmarked by February 6, 2010 and be received no later than February 13, 2010.

The new year starts off with funding requests for surgeries. Florida Thoroughbred Rehab & Placement needed funding for Hakamiah and Dirty During who were both injured on the racetrack. Hakamiah, a 2007 colt, earned $60 in 3 starts. He was injured during the morning workouts and required one screw to secure a lateral condylar fracture. The surgeon also removed pieces of bone that could have become arthritic in the future. He needs 3 months to recover and is expected to have a very good future doing flat work and trail riding. Dirty During, foaled in 2006, fractured his knee in his last race. He earned $4,500 racing. He also needed one screw to hold his bone together. Dirty During is expected to make a full recovery without any limitations to his future careers.

Our goals for 2010 are simple. After the Finish Line wants to continue to increase our donations so we can rescue more Thoroughbreds throughout the United States in the coming year. ATFL was created for the Thoroughbreds that have no means of support when their racing or breeding careers are over. Our donors realize the significance of the work we do to help these noble animals. We encourage you to get involved and thank you for your donations.

Sincerely,

Dawn Mellen, President/Founder

The American Quarter Horse Journal Now Includes Horse-Racing Stories and Information

jan10coverMagazines Merge: After 20 years of separation, AQHA’s Journals reunite, starting in January.

The American Quarter Horse Journal, December 16, 2009 – For more than 20 years, The American Quarter Horse Racing Journal has been a stand-alone publication serving racing owners, breeders, trainers and fans. It wasn’t always that way. Starting with the first issue of The Quarter Horse Journal in 1948, racing has always been an integral part of the American Quarter Horse and the American Quarter Horse Association.
Starting with the January 2010 issue, the Racing Journal will again be a part of The American Quarter Horse Journal. The Racing Journal section — Q-Racing — will join the other discipline sections: halter; rail and pattern; reining, cutting and cow horse; and ranching, rodeo and ropes.
“This decision was not an easy one to make, and many different scenarios were considered before the AQHA Executive Committee and Racing Council approved this change,” said Jim Bret Campbell, AQHA’s senior director of marketing and publications. “Many consumer publications have had to restructure how they do business or have gone out of business altogether. After considering all of the options, allowing this change seemed the best way to continue serving our members, subscribers and advertisers.” Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=9583

Mongol Derby Winner Secretly Paid to Ride

British Racing Association voices views over “Impossible Situation”

London Newspaper reports rise of “Chav Adventure” holidays

He was the only Mongolian rider in the Mongol Derby and, according to the original press reports, he won. Yet in an exclusive interview with the Long Riders’ Guild, the winner revealed that, unlike the other contestants, he had not been asked to pay a large fee to ride. In fact, the organizers of the race had secretly hired him to participate, so as to offset claims that the Mongol Derby was an act of equestrian colonialism.

It was supposed to be a get-rich-quick pony picnic, one which saw affluent foreigners paying to risk their lives in Mongolia in an equestrian endurance race allegedly based upon the mounted accomplishments of Genghis Khan’s relay riders.

Instead the Mongol Derby became a battleground over equestrian ethics, with an unprecedented international protest being raised about the welfare of the horses, the last minute financial involvement of a discredited foreign ruler and now the revelation that the race organizers secretly paid the only Mongolian rider to participate and – according to him – then robbed him of his victory.
