Grand PrixCelebration of Hunters – Gulf Coast 4I am not even sure where to start to tell you about the stellar week in Gulfport. It was a “celebration of hunters” for sure. The show was a WCHR event and on Thursday afternoon, Janet McCarroll hosted a USHJA Lunging Clinic in both Spanish and English. She had about 50 people attend the clinic and I was told over and over what a great job she did along with Dr. Juan Gamboa to explain the safe and proper way to lunge a horse. Great Idea Janet and congrats on the success. On Friday, The Gulf Coast Magnolia Classic hosted the USHJA International Hunter Derby with 43 exhibitors. Paul Jewel and Allen Rheinheimer along with the entire Gulf Coast Classic Company crew worked long into the night cutting brush and setting an incredible course. If you want to watch a round or 12, click here: http://equisvideo.com/winnerscircle/index44.html. The days started with a breakfast sponsored by Dr. Gamboa and Adequan. Everyone loved those home made biscuits… Thanks Juan and Caroline for your support. We then watched great class. Solem Soars! OCALA, FL (March 8, 2010) — It was starting to feel like Florida again as the warm weather arrived just in time for Callan Solem and Allison, owned by Quiet Winter Farm/BJ Maghan, to win the $50,000 Ring Power Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, for their third Grand Prix victory this winter at HITS Ocala. “She’s [Allison] a good girl,” said Solem of New Jersey, who took second in Thursday’s $25,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. “I thought the first round was really smooth – Allison just loves this sport so much, she knows when it’s Sunday and gets very excited.” Starting the class that featured 24 competitors on a course designed by Danny Foster, was Maryland native Tracy Magness and Tarco Van Ter Moude, owned by Mr. and Mrs. John Bartko. Magness set the bar high with a clean round to earn the first spot in the jump-off. Four rounds later, Aaron Vale of Morriston, Florida, and Paparazzi, who were the winning team of Thursday’s $25,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, followed Magness to the jump-off with a clean round. Without a moment to waste, Solem and Allison showed next with a clean round, as the jump-off continued to grow with the biggest names of High-Performance riders at HITS Ocala. Genn Family Dominates Jumper Rings at Gulf Coast Winter Classics Week IVGULFPORT, MS – MAR. 8, 2010 – Lebanon, OH based Wilhelm Genn commented earlier in the season that a perfect event would have three big triumphs, one for each of his sons and one of his own. Week four of the Gulf Coast Winter Series found Genn’s fondest wish coming true. In Thursday afternoon’s $5000 Lucky Sevens Open Jumper Welcome Stake it was Theo Genn riding the Thomas Bruinsma owned Paradox, a 10-year-old Zweibruecker German Warmblood gelding, who bested both the field of 23 competitors and the technical layout of course designer Allen Rheinheimer. “I feel like I got lucky. He’s [Paradox] still young and just moving into this level so there were several who could have beaten us. He’s still developing speed,” a very modest Theo said after a victory gallop. Rheinheimer had an 82 second allowance in which riders were expected to weave their way successfully from one end of the vast grass field to the other while clearing 12 obstacles [15 jumping efforts] that included a double vertical combo and a triple combo of oxer into two verticals out. “It was a snaky ride, but pretty straight forward,” Theo said of their clean 79.284 first round. Eight more horses would join Paradox in the jump off, among them Theo’s dad Wilhelm with the up and coming mount Loredo, owned by Micaela Kennedy. The abbreviated 8 fence/46 second layout had a beat the clock theme as its design was one for a quick pace and quick thinking. While speed was not an issue for most, being delicate over the plank vertical was. In total, only 3 riders had a second clear run. “You had to be careful and fast. Paradox was great!” a happy Theo said of their winning clear time of 39.332. HITS Ocala Week III Wrap-Up![]() ©ESI Photography. OCALA, FL (March 3, 2010) — HITS Post Time Farm in Ocala, Florida wrapped up its third week of AA-rated show jumping on Sunday after an exciting series of classes and special events highlighted another fantastic week on the road to the Pfizer Million. The week saw HITS Ocala’s 2009 Leading Grand Prix Rider Tracy Magness make her anticipated return to the winners’ circle when she captured Thursday’s $25,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, aboard Mr. and Mrs. John Bartko’s Tarco Van Ter Moude. Andre Thieme and Cesar on course during the $75,000 Strongid C 2X Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, at HITS Ocala. OCALA, FL (March 1, 2010) — The HITS Ocala Winter Circuit continues to see fresh faces in the winners’ circle as Andre Thieme and Cesar captured Sunday’s $75,000 Strongid C 2X Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. “It was a very tough and long course,” said Thieme of Plau Am See, Germany, which means ‘Plow on the Lake’. “There were 14 numbered elements and 17 jumps in all, so that’s a lot of jumping to do.” Thieme, 34, started off as a young dressage rider in Germany before making his way to the United States and into the jumper divisions. Now, he’s looking to add a few more Grand Prix victories to his resume during his time in the ‘Horse Capital of the World’ this winter. “This was only the third Grand Prix [Cesar] has done,” said Thieme of the 8-year-old mare which he owns. “I didn’t think I could go that fast with her, but she’s young and has a lot of potential.” Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=10415 FEI World Cup Dressage – Round 9 at Goteborg![]() The Netherlands' Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival scored a clear victory in the last qualifying leg of the FEI World Cup Dressage series at Goteborg, Sweden tonight. Photo: Kit Houghton. COOL CORNELISSEN AND PLACID PARZIVAL TOP LAST QUALIFIER AT GOTHENBURG Goteborg (SWE), 27 February 2010 – Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival kept their cool under intense pressure to win the last qualifying leg of the 2009/2010 FEI World Cup Dressage series in Gothenburg, Sweden tonight. Sweden’s Patrik Kittel produced the ride of his life with Watermill Scandic to slot into second place, but the real battle was played out between the Dutch who were vying for the two remaining places on offer to home side contenders at the Final in ’s-Hertogenbosch in The Netherlands in four weeks time. League leader Edward Gal was clearly always going to make the cut but Cornelissen, Imke Schellekens-Bartels and Anky Van Grunsven knew that tonight would decide which of them would join him. And in this battle of the giants it was winner Cornelissen and third-placed Schellekens-Bartels who earned their stripes while nine-time World Cup champion Van Grunsven just missed out when finishing fourth. $75,000 Fidelity Investments Grand Prix, CSI 2* Victory to Rodrigo Pessoa and Champ 163 at 2010 FTI Winter Equestrian FestivalLaura Kraut and Cedric, Lauren Hough and Quick Study Lead USEF WEG Trial Standings Wellington, FL – February 27, 2010 – It was a full night of show jumping and entertainment for equestrian fans as they saw some of the best horses and riders in the world compete in the $75,000 Fidelity Investments Grand Prix, CSI 2*. Tonight’s class was also the USEF World Equestrian Games (WEG) Trial #2 and led to exciting results for America’s show jumping team. The winner of the $75,000 Fidelity Investments Grand Prix, CSI 2* was Rodrigo Pessoa (BRA) on Champ 163, owned by Legacy Stables LLC. Nicolas Pizarro of Mexico finished second on Crossing Jordan, while Laura Kraut (USA) and Happy Hill Farm’s Cedric were third. Kraut, of Wellington, FL, and Cedric are on the top of the leaderboard for the USEF WEG Trials, tied with Lauren Hough of Wellington, FL, on Quick Study, owned by Laura Mateo. Sitting in third with just one fault is Hillary Dobbs of Sussex, NJ, on Quincy B. The seventh week of the FTI WEF is sponsored by Fidelity Investments and runs through Sunday, February 28. A crowd of nearly 3,500 spectators were on hand to watch the combined grand prix and USEF WEG Trial. The 2010 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival has 12 weeks of competition that conclude on April 4, 2010, and they will be awarding almost $6 million in prize money through the circuit. Guilherme Jorge of Brazil designed tonight’s challenging course, which featured a difficult opening line as well as a very careful triple combination. There were 14 numbered obstacles and 17 jumping efforts. Out of the 49 entries in the class, eight were clear in the first round. Of those eight, three were USEF WEG Trial riders who did not return for the jump-off because of horse declaration. The first to go in the jump-off was McLain Ward on Rothchild, owned by Sagamore Farms. They had a rail for four faults and finished in 40.46 seconds for fourth place. Next in was Nicolas Pizarro of Mexico, who rode his own horse Crossing Jordan to a double clear round to set the early lead in 41.13 seconds. “I went the fastest I think I could go,” Pizarro said. “My turn from one to two was probably a little bit wide. The horse doesn’t have a big stride. Normally he does nice turns, but I got a little bit late.” Pizarro and Crossing Jordan were especially impressive considering it was their first grand prix at WEF, and it was Pizarro’s first time ever showing under lights at a nighttime grand prix. Pizarro has had Crossing Jordan for a year and a half, and they started doing major grand prix classes at Spruce Meadows last year. They helped the Mexican team win the bronze medal at the BMO Nations Cup at Spruce Meadows, and next week’s FEI Nations Cup, presented by CN, is their main goal for this winter. He noted, “Today I felt he was fantastic.” This is Pizarro’s first time competing at the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival. “I think it’s incredible,” he commended. “The facility couldn’t be better.” Lauren Hough and Quick Study were next in but had an unfortunate rail at jump 11b to finish with four faults and a time of 40.64 seconds for fifth place. However, with their first round clear, they sit tied atop the leaderboard in the USEF WEG Trials standings with Kraut. “For me personally, the horse jumped the first round as good as he could jump. He’s a horse with a lot of energy. With only five in the jump-off, I wasn’t going to go full speed, but I didn’t think it would hurt to jump another round tonight. He’s a horse where the more rounds he jumps, the better he is,” Hough explained. “I’m very pleased with where we’re sitting at the moment.” Hough also praised the system that is used to determine the United States’ championship teams. “I am where I am in my career because of the idea that in America, everybody has a chance, and I think that’s important,” she remarked. “I do believe in our process, and I think we have a lot of good riders here. Everybody should have a chance to make it to Europe, and then you have to prove yourself again.” Riding Champ 163, a 1999 Holsteiner stallion by Kornblume xx Coronado, Rodrigo Pessoa would set down a clear round in a winning time of 39.41 seconds to take the lead. Pessoa felt that today’s stout, challenging course suited his horse. “He has a very big stride. There were a lot of place to open up and get going. When you open his stride, he covers a lot of ground. The overall track was really good for him,” he said. Pessoa and Champ 163 were paired together a year ago, and Pessoa has had to adapt himself to the big stallion. “He’s a larger horse that what I’m used to,” he explained. “The last couple of weeks here, we changed his way of going a little bit, and it seems to be working. We give him more room to take off. I was coming too close (to the jump) and now I ride him a little bit different, and he seems to like it.” This was their first grand prix win together. Pessoa would not be challenged by Laura Kraut and Cedric, who would take an easy clear round in 42.16 seconds to finish in third. “My goal was to jump a nice double clear,” Kraut confirmed. “I made the turn from one to two, but I did it much slower than Rodrigo. I wanted him to get back in the ring. It’s the beginning of the year for us and there’s a lot of work to do. We had to get the rust out.” It was another great day for Kraut and Cedric, who won the Olympic Games Trials at the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival in 2008. Kraut believes that this year is different, thanks to Cedric’s experience in the show ring. “I haven’t felt him better ever,” she remarked. “He’s now more seasoned; I can rely on him, whereas before I had to help him a lot. Now he’s doing most of the work and I just go along for the ride.” Kraut also feels that Cedric’s success this week is meaningful. Peter Wetherill of Happy Hill Farm, Cedric’s owner, passed away this past week. Kraut said, “I wish he was here to see this, but hopefully he knows about it. He would be very pleased.” The Fidelity Investments week of the 2010 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival concludes tomorrow with the Suncast 1.50m Classic. The USEF WEG Trials continue with the $40,000 1.60m third trial on Wednesday, March 3, at 3 p.m. at The Stadium. The $30,000 1.60m CSIO fourth trial will run on Friday, March 5, at 12 p.m. in the International Arena, while the FEI Nations Cup, presented by CN, follows that evening at 7 p.m. The fifth trial will run in conjunction with the $150,000 CN U.S. Open Grand Prix, CSIO 4*, on Sunday, March 7, at 1 p.m. For full results and more information, please visit www.shownet.biz or www.equestriansport.com. Heather Buchanan Wilhelm Genn – Laissez les Bon Temps Rouler at the Gulf Coast Winter Classics Third WeekGULFPORT, MS — FEB. 28, 2010 — Translated to English, “let the good times roll” easily sums up the series that Lebanon, OH based Wilhelm Genn continues to enjoy in Gulfport with two $25,000 Grand Prix victories this week. Riding the Laura Ryan-Barnaclo owned Chantal, on Friday Genn celebrated victory in the $25,000 EMO Insurance sponsored Grand Prix and again on Sunday in the $25,000 Nutrena Grand Prix. 2008 Beijing Olympic co-course designer Steve Stephens arrived in Gulfport with one goal in mind, to test the mettle of week three’s competitors over his infamously complicated layouts. Friday’s $25,000 EMO prix consisted of 12 fences/15 efforts, which included 3 sets of double combinations, two triple bars, and several tight rollback turns all set across the vast grass field with the expectation of completing the course cleanly in less than 90 seconds. Genn partnered with his chestnut fireball, 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare Happy Z, and was the first of 30 entries to take on Stephen’s quiz. “I thought it was a good course. Similar to last week I was concerned that it could have been a little bigger, but again it was built to be careful. And it was a very careful course!” Happy Z posted the first clean time of 86.021 and only ten others would duplicate her feat. Among them Columbus, NC resident and show jumping veteran Vick Russell piloting Creed for owner Helen Terranova with a clear round in 86.438, two slots later it was Kelsey Baker riding the Oxford Holding Company entry Lucy Lectric III coming in clear with a time of 84.710 and five rides later Genn added the 12-year-old Holsteiner Chantal’s name to the jump off list with a time of 86.054. “This was a course of keeping your horse sharp everywhere; you could have gotten a rail any place,” Genn offered an opinion to the numerous rails dropping in round one. OCALA, FL (February 26, 2010) — HITS Ocala’s 2009 Leading Grand Prix Rider Tracy Magness made her anticipated return to the winners’ circle yesterday after capturing the $25,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, aboard Mr. and Mrs. John Bartko’s Tarco Van Ter Moude, at Post Time Farm in Ocala, Florida. “I feel like we’ve been knocking on the door for the last two weeks,” said Magness who has competed in all seven of the Grand Prix classes offered in Ocala so far this season, and has placed in six of them. “In the last two Sundays, we had the lightest of rubs which caused us to drop a couple of rails, but our luck has finally changed.” International Course Designer Aki Ylanne of Riihimaki, Finland, who is in Ocala for the first time, set a wide-open course with some tricky challenges that produced four for the jump off out of a field of 21. The first of those clear rounds came from the very first rider on course, Harold Chopping of Southern Pines, North Carolina, aboard Penelope Strait and Jenna Hoy’s Little Glen’s Valentino. The duo, who placed fifth in Sunday’s $50,000 EMO Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, went clear well within the time allowed for the first round. Lexington, KY – February 23, 2010 – Kentucky Spring Horse Shows’ management company, Kentucky Horse Shows LLC, is pleased to announce that the hunter/jumper competition’s prize list is currently available online. The prize list and entry blank are posted on the internet at www.kentuckyhorseshows.com. Entries for the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows close on March 30, 2010. The Kentucky Spring Horse Show will mark the first week of competition, from May 12-16, 2010, at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. The first week is scheduled as a World Championship Hunter Rider (WCHR) recognized hunter competition. An important change to the hunter schedule this year is that all the Junior and Children’s Hunter classes will be held on Saturday and Sunday so as not to interfere with school. Hunter exhibitors will be pleased to find that the OTTO Sport footing system has been installed in the Murphy Ring to match the surfaces in the Stonelea Ring and main hunter schooling area. The top hunter riders from across the country will gather to compete during the $15,000 Chronicle of the Horse/USHJA International Hunter Derby Presented by Dietrich Insurance. This annual event will be held Saturday, May 15, in the Main Stadium. Each year the derby includes jumps reminiscent of the hunt field, such as a natural post and rail, a stonewall, a coop, an aiken, hedges, logs, banks, and ditches. |
