Memory: Sadly, Jennie Brannigan’s talented partner Cooper succumbed to his battle with laminitis, just one of the many complications after being injured in a freak accident during their Fair Hill CCI3* show jumping round. The decision was made to humanely euthanize the eight-year-old Dutch Warmbloodgelding. During the past few years, Jennie, 22, and the athletic grey gelding took the eventing world by storm, racking up a near flawless record and creating a fairytale partnership. They won an astounding nineteen events, were awarded Adequan USEA Intermediate Gold Cup Champions in 2008 and Reserve Gold Cup Champions in 2009, CCI2* individual and team gold medal winners at the 2008 NAJYRC, and were named to this year’s USEF High Performance B List. They also received the prestigious Jacqueline Mars Training Grant, allowing them the opportunity to travel to England to compete in the Bramham CCI3*. Our thoughts and prayers go out to our friend Jennie.
The American Quarter Horse Racing Journal, December 14, 2009 – Bank of America Racing Challenge enrollment numbers have remained strong in 2009, despite a downturn in the racing industry and the overall U.S. economy. With slightly more than two weeks remaining in 2009, owners have enrolled 2,476 horses, down only 240 from 2008.
“We are extremely pleased that the Challenge enrollments for 2009 are comparable to the final 2008 numbers,” said Darrell Hare, director of AQHA’s Racing Challenge. “In view of the current economy, the uncertainty of the future for racing at some tracks that have traditionally hosted Challenge races, plus the current discussions taking place about proposed changes for the Challenge program, Challenge supporters have demonstrated their continued belief in the program by enrolling their horses.”
How to get your horse to do correct lope departures with minimal cues.
December 15, 2009 – In horsemanship or equitation, a good lope or canter departure will lead to a better execution of your maneuver. A good lope departure is when a horse responds to a minimal cue from the rider with willingness and collection.
It’s important in every AQHA event. In western riding, it’s scored. In western pleasure, a lope departure sets up your lope. It’s much easier for a horse to carry himself after he has departed correctly than it is to have a bad departure and try to correct it as you go down the pen.
As a judge, when I see a horse depart to a lope from a jog, I consider it a bad departure if a horse increases his cadence of step at the jog and trots into the lope. But it is all right for that horse to take a step, collect himself and then depart. Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=9274

CHICAGO, (EWA) December 6, 2009 – The Equine Welfare Alliance (EWA), an organization representing more than 70 member organizations, strongly applauds the recent announcement from the New York Racing Association (NYRA) establishing a zero tolerance policy toward horse slaughter at its race tracks.
Chris Hayward, NYRA president and chief executive officer, stated, “We are fully committed to protecting our sport’s equine athletes.” Hayward continued, “This policy sends the message that horse slaughter will not be tolerated and that those participating in this practice, either knowingly, or for lack of due diligence, will not be welcome at Aqueduct, Belmont Park, or Saratoga.”
The three tracks represent a triple crown of respected venues serving the sport of kings.
The NYRA statement comes on the heels of the announcement from Old Friends Kentucky Thoroughbred Retirement Facility of the opening of their auxiliary farm, Old Friends at Cabin Creek: The Bobby Frankel Division, just outside Saratoga Race Course in Greenfield Center, NY. The 40 acre farm leased by Old Friends owner, Michael Blowen, has already retired three former racehorses, Moonshadow, Gigli and Thunder Rumble since its opening last month.
“Blowen and Hayward both refer to Americanrace horses as athletes – an appropriate term deserving of the horse’s contributions to the sport,” said EWA’s John Holland.
“Racing enthusiasts come to see the horses and it is the horses that bring revenues. They deserve a dignified retirement, not ending up on an elite diner’s plate in Europe,” added EWA’s, Vicki Tobin.
The NYRA zero tolerance policy states, “Any owner or trainer stabled at a New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) track found to have directly or indirectly sold a horse for slaughter will have his or her stalls permanently revoked from all NYRA tracks. NYRA requires its horsemen to conduct due diligence on those buying horses and encourages them to support rescue and adoption efforts and to find humane ways of dealing with horses unable to continue racing.”
The horse slaughter industry contributes less than 3 cents of every $100 of revenue for the horse industry. EWA is encouraged by the NYRA announcement as an indication that the industry, like the overwhelming majority of horse owners, believes that the slaughter of American horses is neither necessary nor acceptable.

Correction: When we were talking about our wonderful spotlight vaulting squad last week, who have now been picked to represent Great Britain at next year’s World Equestrian Games, we mistakenly identified Gill Barham as the chef d’equipe. Lucy Bell, is of course the chef d’equipe and Gill, is the vice chair of British Equestrian Vaulting. We do apologize for the misunderstanding.
