Hillary Dobbs at the 2010 Washington International Horse Show

Photos by Diana De Rosa.

Former CNN anchor Lou Dobbs’s daughter Hillary showed her wining style at the 2010 Washington International Horse Show in DC the last week. The 22 year old, who lives between Palm Beach, FL and Sussex, NJ, competed as “The Flash” aboard Marengo placing in second during always colorful and exciting $20,000 Gambler’s Choice Costume Class. Rodrigo Pessoa won the class, decked out in an authentic Formula One racing outfit, complete with helmet.  Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s daughter Georgina (also of Palm Beach and NYC) placed 6th, in a full nun’s habit.  The 3rd place ribbon in the costume class went to Shane Sweetnam, who partnered with Dobbs to win Saturday night’s $15,000 Open Jumper Pair Relay.

Sarah Ward Wins $2,000 A/O Handy Hunter Class Despite Torn ACL & Meniscus at WIHS

ATLANTA, GA – October 29, 2010 — Despite riding with a torn ACL and meniscus and year-long effort to earn a place to compete at the 52nd annual Washington International Horse Show in DC, the payoff was big for Sarah Ward of Atlanta, GA on Wednesday, October 27, 2010.  The 20 year old equestrian, who trains with Jack Towell and Liza Boyd of Finally Farm in SC, piloted her gelding Onassis to the victory in the $2,000 Amateur Owner Handy Hunter Stake (35 and under) putting in a flawless round against 23 other top riders; the pair also placed 7th in the 3,000 A/O Hunter Stakes during the competition.  The University of South Carolina sophomore will now have surgery on her right knee to be performed by orthopedic surgeon Dr. John Xerogeanes, head of the Emory Sports Medicine Center in Atlanta, GA.

Sarah Ward Competes at Indoors Despite Severe Injury

A/O Rider Sarah Ward Competes Despite Torn ACL & Severe Knee Injury in Open Jumpers and Year End Hunter Finals This Week

October 22, 2010 — Sarah Ward of Atlanta, GA was enjoying a game of flag football with 14 classmates back at the University of South Carolina classmates (and members of the Gamecocks  Equestrian Team including Kelsey Stangebye) when she switched directions really fast while running. She heard a snap, and as she hit the ground felt pain in her right knee.  She finished the game, but the team lost terribly.  No wonder; after a trip to the Emergency Room the next morning, the 20 year old sophomore learned she’d torn her ACL and Meniscus, and was going to need surgery.

But the injury couldn’t stop the young equestrian from riding to win, or at least trying to win! The week after her accident, Sarah walked the Open Jumper Classic course at the Aiken Fall Festival II (Sept. 16 to 20), with the help of crutches, in Aiken, SC.  This was only the second time that Sarah had competed at this level, and she did it with a severe handicap.  “The show managers kept saying, ‘The course isn’t finished yet,’ as I hobbled out on the field,” remembered Sarah, who has been getting by on Aleve and anti-inflammatory medications prescribed her orthopedic surgeon Dr. John Xerogeanes. “I said, ‘By the time I get to the other side of the ring it will be.’”  Before entering the arena against 30 other top competitors, Sarah put aside her crutches and removed her knee brace and successfully piloted her jumper Ludwig Storgaard to the 6th place ribbon.  She also competed on both of her Amateur Owner Hunters Isaac and Onassis, winning four classes and receiving the Championship ribbon for their efforts.

The tornado that slammed into the Olympic stadium may have delayed the XXI Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, but it didn’t dampen the competition or spectators’ spirits. “You can plan for almost anything,” stated Liliane Stransky, the owner of Stransky’s Mission Farm and founder of the Step by Step charity. “I have learned the hard way, there is no plan with nature.  Every day is unexpected, and thank God no people, or horses, were seriously hurt.” Stransky celebrated the finishing of the Step by Step Foundation’s new Tipa Tipa Elementary School in Haiti with her 14 year old daughter Daniela by cheering on both Hector Florentino (Dominican Republic) riding their bay Ultimo, and Diego Muyshodndt (El Salvador) on their jumper Ikarus, in the CAC show jumping competitions. 31 nations were scheduled to participate.

StepByStepMarch 23, 2010 – Wellington, FL — It was an evening of competition where everyone came out a winner, especially the international children’s charity The Step by Step Foundation (www.stepbystepfoundation.com).  The three member SBS team was giving it their all on the international field at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Festival to win funds to go to Haitian relief.

Amateur and junior riders had the thrill of a lifetime when they were able to compete side by side with Olympic champions and international show jumping icons during the first ever Great Charity Challenge on Saturday, March 20, 2010 during the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival.

Heading the riding squad for the international charity the Step by Step Foundation was long time SBS supporter, U.S. Olympian Margie Engle, who had championed the children’s organization earlier in the year when she joined founder Liliane Stransky to host the All In for Charity Poker Tournament and Benefit following the devastating earthquake in Haiti.  The one night of gaming, auctions and fun raised over $100,000 in funds went to help the devastated country of Haiti.  She added another worth while win, both for her resume and for children in need, when she and her fellow riders walked out of the grand prix arena with a $150,000 check that will be donated to the Step by Step Foundation.

Hillary Dobbs Clears Her First Hurdle towards Securing Slot at the World Equestrian Games

Harvard Senior Joins U.S. Nation’s Cup Teams in Europe to Determine Final 5-Member Squad

WELLINGTON, Fla. — March 9, 2010 — Hillary Dobbs of Wantage, NJ and Palm Beach, FL, who celebrated her 22nd birthday today, achieved her first goal toward securing a place on the U.S. show jumping team for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Ky., this fall.  After the final Grand Prix selection trial at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, Florida on Sunday, Dobbs finished sixth on the ranking list.
The Harvard senior and daughter of former CNN anchor Lou Dobbs will now represent the U.S. as a member of one of the three American teams that are going to Europe for Nations’ Cup competitions. How the candidates perform oversees will determine which of them will be on the five-member squad for the prestigious WEG in Lexington, Ky., this fall.

A total of 15 horse/rider combinations are being named to the long list from which the Cup teams will be assembled. Dobbs, who led the standings with her mount Quincy B after the second trial, had two errors in the third trial that dropped her down the list by adding 8 penalties to her score. She came back in the fourth trial with only two time penalties and was on her way to a clean round in Sunday’s final Grand Prix trial, when her jumper knocked rails at the last two fences for another 8 penalties.
