FEI Eventing Risk Management Action Plan on Target

Lausanne (SUI), 31 January 2011 – The FEI Eventing Risk Management Action Plan, which was launched in January 2010, is on target, as shown by the steady decrease in the percentage of Cross-Country falls.

National Safety Officers (NSOs) from 22 nations who attended the FEI’s annual NSO seminar in Greenwich, London (GBR) on 29-30 January were shown provisional statistics for 2010 which demonstrate that as numbers of international events and participants increase, the incidence of falls continues to decrease.

Arenus Congratulates Strong Bond Contest Winners and Their Heartfelt Success Stories

Rebekah Bilek and her Arabian, Ali, were the winners of the Arenus Strong Bonds Contest. (Photo courtesy of Arenus)

St. Louis, MO (January 31, 2011) – The strong bond between horses, dogs and humans is profound and Arenus, a premier provider of innovative health and nutritional products for pets and horses, recently held a Strong Bonds Contest to discover heartwarming stories that forever bond humans with their animals. Now that the winners have been announced, Arenus is sharing their stories with the world – but those stories come with a warning: tissues may be required while reading.

The Grand Prize winning story, “Bruised, Broken and Bonded by Love”, was written by Debbie Bilek. The story details the bond between Bilek’s daughter, Rebekah, whom the Bilek family adopted from the foster care system. As a tiny child, Rebekah had already faced abuse and abandonment. Two years ago Rebekah bonded with a beautiful Arabian horse named Ali, and the bond was immediate and deep.

“Debbie’s story about her daughter and Ali is breathtaking. It really shows the bond that can develop between a horse and a human, and it also shows how the two can heal each other,” said Simone Pophal, DVM, PhD, and Arenus’ Business Manager. “I hope everyone will go to our website and read Debbie’s story, as well as the stories belonging to the other winners. We want to thank everyone who participated in our Strong Bonds Contest. Each and every story touched the hearts of everyone at Arenus.”

Wellington, FL (January 31, 2011) – Gracious, a Dutch gelding ridden by Christopher Payne, made headlines last year at the Winter Equestrian Festival when he won the Baby Green Hunter Circuit Championship. Gracious returned to the spotlight during the second week of the 2011 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival when he took home the Draper “Best Foot Forward” Award. Sponsored by Draper Equine Therapy, makers of therapeutic horse and rider products featuring the innovative “smart fiber” Celliant, Gracious rode away with a pair of Draper Equine Therapy Recovery Wraps, a Draper Anti-Sweat Sheet and a Draper Saddle Pad as the winner of the Draper “Best Foot Forward” Award.

Payne, who rides out of New Hope Farm in Cincinnati, Ohio with trainer David Belford, is now showing Gracious in the Pre Green Division and received a pair of Draper Body Therapy Socks and a Draper Mesh Fitted T-shirt for winning the Draper “Best Foot Forward” Award. “Draper Equine Therapy sponsored many of our classes last year so we took home lots of Draper prizes and loved them all,” Belford said. “The therapeutic benefits of Celliant work wonderfully.”

Wellington, FL – January 30, 2011 – The FTI Winter Equestrian Festival, which runs through April 3, finished its third week of competition with a successful Sunday. The Coldwell Banker Children’s Hunter Horse 15-17 awarded their tricolor honors among numerous other championships today.

Isabel Portela was all smiles on Sunday afternoon when she was named the Coldwell Banker Children’s Hunter Horse 15-17 champion. Portela was aboard the James B. Pirtle Enterprises Inc entry, Millesime Du Valy, an eleven-year-old Selle Francais gelding.

The duo opted not to compete in the fifth class of the division, the under saddle, but they still had enough points over fences to secure the championship. Portela saw only blue the first day of showing when she won both of the over fences classes on Saturday. Sunday, the pair was also third in an over fences class.

Wellington, FL – January 30, 2011 – The 2011 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) concluded its third week of competition on Sunday afternoon with a $25,000 Suncast 1.50m Championship Jumper Series Classic. Held in the International Arena of the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC), the class was won by Paulo Santana (BRA) and Taloubet over a starting field of 31 entries. This win was the pair’s first WEF victory.

This week’s course designer in the International Arena was Olaf Petersen Sr. of Germany. Petersen designed a challenging course for the day’s class, which narrowed down the field to just six entries who continued to the jump-off. Santana and Taloubet, owned by Jennifer Santana, were the fastest of three double clear rounds to take home top honors. An eleven-year-old KWPN gelding by Baloubet Du Rouet x Quidam De Revel, Taloubet was smooth and confident in the jump-off and earned great praise from his rider. The pair went second over the short course and put down a clear, fast round in 34.537 seconds that would hold up for the win.

Official Licensed Jewelry 1973 Triple Crown Winner Secretariat

Secretariat, America’s champion, fondly known as Big Red, became a hero and a symbol of hope during the early 1970s.  His legacy as the greatest racehorse of all time has endured to this day. From the cover of Time magazine to his very own United States postal stamp, Secretariat’s image has been an inspiration to those that have followed his career and continue to love him even now.

“I am honored to have the license to design jewelry for Secretariat. He followed his heart with his tremendous passion for running and has been an inspiration to me to continue to follow my own heart.”  The jubilation heard in the voice of Chic Anderson from CBS television during the 1973 Belmont Stakes said it all: “He is running like a tremendous machine!”

All Secretariat designs are made and hand finished in Arizona. The styles include a large and small pendant, charm, charm bracelet, brooch, and cuff links in silver and 14k gold. Each piece is stamped with the name Secretariat on the back and arrives in a gift box with a blue satin pouch and blue and white checkered commemorative card with the inscription:

“Keep the Big Red Flame Burning!”

Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping 2010/2011 – Round 9, Zurich

EHNING MAKES IT FIVE FOR GERMANY AT ZURICH by Louise Parkes

Zurich (SUI), 30 January 2011 – Marcus Ehning brought the German tally to five wins in the 2010/2011 Rolex FEI World Cup Jumping series with a convincing victory riding Noltes Kuchengirl at the ninth leg in Zurich, Switzerland today.  In an exciting seven-way jump-off against the clock, the defending champion pipped British birthday boy, 28 year old Ben Maher riding the rejuvenated Robin Hood W, while Australia’s Edwina Alexander and Cevo Itot du Chateau finished third.

Remarkably, two Spanish riders made the cut into the jump-off and the first of these, Pilar Cordon, slotted into fourth when double-clear with Nuage Bleu while German superstars Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and Shutterfly had to settle for fifth with a single mistake against the clock.  Today’s result however has promoted Michaels-Beerbaum to runner-up spot in the Western European League standings which continue to be led by World No. 1 Kevin Staut from France whose first-round double-error proved costly today.

Tip of the Week – What Type of Personality Is Your Horse?

The Five Element Theory in Chinese medicine is based on five fundamental elements in the universe and the body that are in constant motion and change.

The first element, Wood, is associated with eyes, tendons, ligaments, hooves and nails and the season, spring.  The second one, Fire, is associated with speech, mind, blood vessels and complexion and the season, summer.  The third, Earth, is associated with muscles and digestion and late summer.  The fourth, Metal, is associated with skin and respiration and the season, fall. The fifth, Water, is associated with bones and elimination and the season, winter.

For example, a wood horse is more prone to bowed tendons, cracked hooves or conjunctivitis.  A fire horse is more prone to cardiac arrhythmias.  An earth horse is more prone to muscle atrophy and colic.  A metal horse is more prone to COPD or respiratory difficulties.  A water horse is more prone to arthritis and may get worse in the winter.
