A good friend left the barn today. I was sad to know that he wasn’t coming back. His person took a new job in another city so he had to go to a new place. I will miss his funny nicker and his terrific sense of humor.
Letting go of friends, jobs, or situations can be hard. It can hurt. But letting go is a natural part of life. Change is inevitable, so it is wise to put some perspective on the feelings and understand how to move beyond the discomfort.
Everything changes. Everything! Resistance to change can be one of the most challenging natural traits to overcome. And yet, all you have to do is relax, let go of your need for things to be a certain way, and trust that there is more going on than meets the eye. There is a plan, an order to the Universe, that we can’t possibly know. It’s that leap of faith in trusting that all is well, even when it is uncomfortable and unknown, that’s the key to letting go of our discomfort with change.
December 28, 2010 – It is said that you cannot teach someone common sense.
This is the case with the mantra of illogical statements we hear from horse slaughter supporters. The statements, spoken with such authority, in fact either lack common sense or amount to nothing more than finding a piece of jello they can nail to the wall.
The “unwanted” horse stories would lead the country to believe that millions of horses are running loose in our streets. Every sound bite and every article warns of unwanted horses. Another favorite is to start articles with “since Congress banned horse slaughter” or “because of the slaughter ban.”
When the unwanted horses are combined with the ban on horse slaughter, it provides a powerful statement in favor of horse slaughter. That is, until you look at the facts. One need not be a horse owner to see the lack of logic behind the statements of slaughter supporters. This illogic is as easily detected by a New York apartment dweller as a seasoned horse owner.

GAL REIGNS SUPREME WHILE MINDERHOUD TAKES MAXIMUM POINTS AND SALZGEBER FORGES AHEAD ON LEADERBOARD by Claartje van Andel
Mechelen (BEL), 28 December 2010 – The Netherlands’ Edward Gal and his mare Sisther de Jeu simply did what they set out to do at the sixth leg of the 2010/2011 Reem Acra FEI World Cup Dressage series in Mechelen, Belgium today when following their victory in the Grand Prix with the same result in the Freestyle. As Gal is the title defender and does not receive points in his starts, his partner, Hans Peter Minderhoud, claimed maximum points when runner-up with the mare Exquis Nadine. And Ulla Salzgeber, winner at both Kaposvar in Hungary and at Frankfurt in her native Germany this season, finished third with her chestnut mare Wakana to forge a strong lead at the top of the series leaderboard.
Gal was relieved and happy with the win. He took the rather inexperienced mare Sisther de Jeu to Olympia in London and now to Mechelen. “She is very sensitive and is not used to a lot of noise and to the crowds, but she is learning to behave better, and to relax – this definitely will be her future,” the 40 year old rider said with confidence. His Freestyle music is just like the famous Freestyle of his former ride, the stallion Totilas which has now been sold to Germany. The score was created by Dutch musician Joost Peters, who is married to Dutch dressage rider and trainer Mischa Koot, and the music cast a mysterious spell over the movements of Sisther de Jeu who began to really show what she can do during the test.

St. Charles, MO (December 27, 2010) – Arenus, a premier provider of innovative health and nutritional products for pets and horses, is proud to announce that they are continuing their sponsorship of the American Riding Instructors Association (ARIA). In addition to sponsoring the ARIA, Arenus is offering incentives to trainers who sign up for the Arenus Professional Referral Program.
“Many equine professionals have requested that Arenus develop a program that would reward them for promoting Arenus products,” said Simone Pophal, DVM, PhD, Arenus Business Manager. “They asked and we delivered. We are pleased to announce our exciting Professional Referral Program (PRP).”
The PRP rewards loyal professionals for their referrals of Arenus brand products. PRP is open to all equine and pet professionals. “We are excited to offer this program to our professionals,” said Pophal. “It is easy to use and all they have to do is go to the Arenus website and sign up under Partnerships.”
The philosophy of Arenus is to not only create unique health and nutrition products that holistically address specific issues, but to support the equestrian community as well. “Trainers all across the country use products from the Arenus family and we always appreciate it when they recommend our products to their clients, so this is one way of thanking them,” said Pophal.
Chiropractic is much more than treating bones out of place. The vertebrae that encompass the spine surround and protect the spinal cord and major nerve roots. Life force is generated in the brain and transmitted through these nerves to the organs. So, if a vertebra is subluxated, it is more than pain or facilitation that your horse feels, it is also causing diminished activity and vitality of the organs connected to that vertebral segment. Potentially, this can cause digestive, immune and glandular imbalances.
Subluxation of joints is recognized by lessened motion of the joints, by slight changes in the position of the articulating bones, and by pain. The surrounding muscles and connective tissue will splint to protect the area. This alteration of movement in the vertebral joints is known as “kinesiopathy.” Although most chiropractors adjust the spine, be sure that your chiropractor pays attention to the extremities as well.
Performance horses greatly benefit from regular chiropractic care. There are a plethora of different schools of thought in both the human and equine chiropractic fields. Watch out for excessive long lever techniques and the hammer and mallet folks with no formal training! Remember, by definition a subluxation can be a slight change in the position of bones. Sometimes you get all the adjustment you need from a subtle “network chiropractic” contact on the sacro-tuberous ligament or on the occiput. The American Veterinary Chiropractic Association certifies both DCs and vets to perform chiropractic. This is a good resource.
Introducing eventing legend from New Zealand, Andrew Nicholson, who makes his debut on the show to talk about how he got to be one of the sport’s most prolific riders.
