As USEF NSAID Rules Change, It’s Time to Go Organic

NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) may help mask lameness while reducing pain, swelling, and inflammation, but they can also be very harmful to the equine athlete.  NSAIDs can contribute to GI ulcers and colic, renal and liver toxicity, and decrease a horse’s health and performance.

The USEF now requires a “NSAID Disclosure form” to be filed with the Steward/Technical Delegate if more than one NSAID is used during a competition or in the 5 days preceding a USEF competition.  Starting December 1, 2011, the presence of only one NSAID will be allowed!  The seven NSAIDs currently allowed with quantitative restrictions are Bute, Banamine, Naproxen, Ketofen, Arquel, Equioxx, and topical Surpass.

KAM Animal Services offers FRE Choice Liquid as a safe effective NSAID alternative.  FRE Liquid has been used in show and race horses for years with great success and is veterinarian tested and endorsed.  It has none of the negative side effects or risks that the above NSAIDs are known for.

Crusader Sword Retired to Old Friends at Cabin Creek

GEORGETOWN, KY – SEPTEMBER 15, 2010 – Tinners Way, one of the most successful and only surviving sons of Triple Crown winner Secretariat, arrived yesterday at Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement Farm in Georgetown, KY.

Meanwhile, Old Friends at Cabin Creek: The Bobby Frankel Division, which is based in Greenfield Center, NY, has welcomed multiple-graded stakes winner Crusader Sword.

Michael Blowen, Old Friends founder and president, made the announcement earlier today.

Tinners Way (Secretariat–Devon Diva, by The Minstrel) was bred by Juddmonte Farms from Secretariat’s final crop. Tinner began his career with a seven-furlong maiden win on British turf in 1992 and continued to campaign in France and England as well as in the U.S. in 1993

Keep Your Horse on the Bit during Transitions, by Jane Savoie

Your horse is perfectly justified in coming off the bit if all you do is give the aid for a transition. To do transitions on the bit, you need to give two sets of aids at once: the transition aid and the aid to tell him to stay on the bit — the connecting aids. When you give these two sets of aids at once, you’re telling your horse to do a transition on the bit.

Essentially, you’ll superimpose the connecting aids over the aids for a transition. That is, you’ll give the connecting aids before, during, and after the transition.

In this case, the connecting aids last several seconds. Apply them lightly before, during, and after the transition so that you “bridge” the transition with your connecting aids.

WHIA Newsletter September 15, 2010

We are just a week away from our conference and looks like there is going to be a really wonderful group of people attending. We have people coming from all over the U.S. and Canada. Our exhibitors this year are fantastic and are going to showcase some incredible products and services. Our speakers are going to give everyone in attendance a lot to think about and learn. And, again, we have a ton of super door prizes to give away including a half share in a thoroughbred race horse (compliments of Kate Richards Wilt and Pocket Aces Racing). Thanks to everyone who is donating door prizes. A list of them is on our website.

I had a couple of cancellations this morning and so I have two FREE tickets to give away. If you are attending the event and want to bring a friend, please email me right away or better yet, call me at 615-730-7833. These reservations have already been paid for and I don’t want the lunches to go to waste!

We will also again have our OPEN NETWORKING sessions where you will get to promote your business and meet a lot of people in the room. Like last year, the dress is casual and jeans are fine. If you haven’t signed up to attend but still want to come, please call us at 615-730-7833 so we can get you registered. Everyone who attends receives a directory with contact listings all of the attendees. This is a really great resource tool. Finally, the Kentucky governor’s wife, Jane Brashear, can’t make it because of scheduling conflicts, but she is sending someone very special in her place. We will send out a press release about this exciting speaker later today or tomorrow. All I know is that you will really enjoy her luncheon speech a great deal.

FEI Releases Updated Elective Testing List

15 September 2010 – In the final countdown to the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, the FEI has published an updated version of the FEI Elective Testing List. Elective Testing allows Team Veterinarians to submit urine from FEI-registered competition horses to an FEI Reference Laboratory to test for up to four Prohibited Substances.

The Elective Testing List, approved by all the FEI Reference Laboratories, contains significantly more substances than was previously offered at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in order to provide the best service possible to the Treating Veterinarians. Only Controlled Medications (commonly-used substances with valid therapeutic uses in equine medicine) will be available for testing on this list. This is consistent with the FEI’s approach to Banned Substances not having a regular legitimate use.

Elective Testing is intended to assist Team Veterinarians in treating horses prior to competition ahead of routine in-competition testing. With this transparent approach the FEI aims to provide greater confidence for Treating Veterinarians to reduce the risk of required medication usage being above FEI levels at the time of competition.

Quarantine Facility Ready for Equine Athletes Competing at the WEG

September 15, 2010 – Lexington, KY – 9 days to go – A temporary equine quarantine facility at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport is ready to facilitate the entry of horses from around the world competing in the eight World Championships of the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, September 25 – October 10 at the Kentucky Horse Park.

The World Games 2010 Foundation worked in conjunction with officials from the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport, the US Department of Agriculture and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture to have the airport classed as a temporary port of entry for the horses coming to compete.

Almost 500 horses are anticipated to pass through this new temporary facility on their way to the Kentucky Horse Park. The horses will be coming from Europe and the Middle East through Belgium on non-stop flights. The first horses are scheduled to arrive on September 16th. Approximately 50 horses and their attendants will travel on each of these special flights into the airport.

Final Wrap-Up of 2010 Land Rover/USEA American Eventing Championships

Becky Holder and Courageous Comet on their way to the 2010 Advanced Championship. Leslie Threlkeld photo.

It was all about the upper levels today at the 2010 Land Rover/USEA American Eventing Championships. Five divisions including Advanced, Intermediate, and all three Preliminary divisions show jumped today in the beautiful arenas at Chattahoochee Hills.

Advanced

The Advanced show jumping was the first to go in the Grand Prix arena this morning. The WEG Short Listed riders who did not run cross-country yesterday show jumped both before and after the actual competition which created a different atmosphere in the arena. After the dust settled, overnight leader Becky Holder and Courageous Comet knocked only a single rail during the Marc Donovan designed course. However, they had a rail in hand over the two competitors nipping at their heels, Nate Chambers and Will Faudree, and the experienced pair remained gracefully atop the leaderboard.

“I’m so proud of him,” sighed Holder happily after her round. “The show jumping has always been rough for me. I always get rattled in there and get in a hurry… but we’ve both come a long way.”

Every mini competing at the show will be given a SuperMask Miniature Horse Fly Mask.

As a strong supporter of small equines, Farnam has produced the SuperMask Miniature Horse Fly Mask in two sizes and three styles for small equines. “The products that Farnam has developed for small equines are really beneficial, and the American Miniature Horse Registry is thrilled that Farnam will make the National Championships that much better by giving out 1,500 SuperMask Miniature Horse Fly Masks,” said Johnny Robb, Director of Marketing for the AMHR.

The AMHR National Championship is the biggest event for small equines in the country, and the show determines the nation’s top Miniature Horses during this action packed week at the Expo Square Arena in Tulsa, September 9-19th.
