West Palm Beach, FL (April 27, 2010) – Highlife Farms successful Warmblood auction, held recently at the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, proved to be a successful night that has many new horse owners rejoicing. The auction was hosted by Highlife Farms, owned by Kenny and Joan Sims, one of the country’s most prominent breeding farms and home to world-class sport horses.
The auction gave horse owners a chance to buy offspring from Highlife Farms legendary stallions, on a night that featured top names in the dressage community gathering for a European-style horse auction. Judith Twiggs, of Clemson, South Carolina, bought Highlife’s Dakarai for her daughter Jessica. “We are very grateful to Highlife Farms for making this happen,” Twiggs said. “When my daughter saw Dakarai she just fell in love. He’s the right horse for her and we are thrilled that he will be able to take her as far in her dressage career as she wants to go.”

SAUGERTIES, NY (April 27, 2010) — Definitely Devoucoux! The highly-acclaimed Devoucoux Hunter Derby will be making its debut at HITS Culpeper and HITS Saugerties for the spring and summer show season.
The Devoucoux Hunter Derby found huge success this past winter at HITS Thermal and HITS Ocala, giving away $10,000 in prize money for each class during the rated weeks of competition.
Greg Sadovic of Devoucoux witnessed the overwhelming success of this innovative event at HITS Ocala. “We are very excited about the turnout for such a fantastic class,” commented Sadovic. “We are happy to support the hunters and the level of competition they bring to the horse show.”
Kristen Bumpus of Concord, Massachusetts, won back-to-back derbies at HITS Ocala on Inspired. “There are two Grand Prix classes every week and so much prize money in the jumpers, so it’s really nice to have a prestigious hunter class with a great purse.”
The Tryon May Classic (May 28-30) will be held at Harmond Field again this year. This USEF A-Rated event will be a small show since there are only 144 stalls available and will be like the shows we used to attend before the mega shows took over our schedules. The judges will be Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Oare of Warrenton, VA. If you would like a prize list please call our office at 843 768 5503.
The Atlanta Summer Classic I, II (June 16-27) has many changes from our shows we have been producing each summer. The schedule has changed and will run like most of our shows with the non pro divisions on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Please read the schedule carefully. We have also created some new and fun classes for both the equitation and jumper riders. We will offer an Open Freestyle Charity Equitation Classic and both our Children’s / Adults and our Jr AO Jumpers will be run under a modified World Cup format which will give a cash bonus to the top 8 riders. Like I said, these shows will be fun and different. We will still be USEF AA – Rated, World Championship Hunter Rider Event, both the USHJA International Hunter Derby and the USHJA Hunter Classic will be offered along with the Annual Trainers Medal, Outback Charity Dinner, Horseless horse show, and the Atlanta Cup Equitation for both horses and ponies. Lots of fun to be had in Atlanta in June.

Ocala, FL (April 27, 2010) – Helmets are the center stage topic in equestrian safety right now, and USEF Safety Committee member Chester Weber has turned his Charles Owen helmet into a box office hit! Safety really is a movie, thanks to a camera installed on Weber’s Charles Owen helmet.
Combined Driver Weber, the eight-time USEF National Four-In-Hand Champion, uses his helmet camera as a training tool. “The helmet cam is a way to record the driver’s-eye view of a four-in-hand team. I use it as a training tool at home,” Weber said. “The helmet cam makes safety fun and acts as a training tool that can enhance future performances.”
When it comes to safety, Weber has always put his money where his mouth is. He and his team are long-time users of Charles Owen helmets, which provide safety and offer unparalleled comfort. “The importance of wearing helmets is in the spotlight right now, and as a driver I certainly recommend wearing helmets, especially in the marathon,” Weber said.
CULPEPER, VA (April 26, 2010) — Peter Leone and Nerval de la Batia, owned by The Beaupre Group, are on the road to the Pfizer Million as they took home the victory in Sunday’s $40,000 EMO Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, to highlight the Commonwealth National.
“It means a lot to me to come here and kick off the season,” said Leone of Greenwich, Connecticut, who competed in his first of eight needed Pfizer Million Grand Prix qualifiers. “Tom Struzzieri and HITS have done a fantastic thing organizing the [Pfizer] $1 Million Grand Prix as a year-end finale.”
Leone was one of 18 to compete on a course designed by Danny Foster of Canada, that only saw four horse and rider teams return for the jump-off.
“I thought the course was excellent,” said Leone. “It was a long and very challenging course.”
America’s Horse, April, 26, 2010 – The words “expo” or “clinic” really don’t capture the essence of QuarterFest: A Celebration of the Horse. Actually, “celebration” is a pretty good way to sum it up.
Sponsored by the American Quarter Horse Association, QuarterFest – April 30 – May 2 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee – is a weekend filled with top-notch clinicians, a fun area for kids, evenings of entertainment and more. Whether you bring your horse to participate or just come to watch, you’re sure to find plenty to see and do. Here are some of the highlights:
Clinicians include: Stacy Westfall (reining), Lynn Palm (English equitation and dressage), Julie Goodnight (common riding problems and solutions), Curt Pate (ranch roping and stockmanship), Tammy Pate (yoga/horsemanship and negotiating trail obstacles), Mike Major (versatility ranch horse), Ken McNabb (colt starting), Bo Winslow (horse camping), and Christy Landwehr (beginning horsemanship and youth riding lessons).
What’s a celebration without party games? The QuarterFest playday kicks off April 30 and May 1, with fun games like egg and spoon horsemanship, apple bobbing and cowboy jousting, just to name a few. The competitions will be separated into age groups, with great prizes in each division. The cost is only $5 per session, payable at the gate. Special QuarterFest certificates of achievement will be mailed to participants riding American Quarter Horses. April 26, 2010 – CHICAGO (EWA) – Montana Representative Ed Butcher’s plan of building a horse slaughter plant in Hardin, MT has ended.
The city of Hardin unanimously passed Ordinance No. 2010-01 that amends the current zoning ordinance to prohibit the slaughter of more than 25 animals in a seven day period. The action effectively bars the building of a slaughter plant in Hardin.
Mayor Kimberly A. Hammond provided the following statement to Equine Welfare Alliance (EWA).
“I have no deluded thoughts or feelings about the need for proper disposal or care of unwanted horses.
As Mayor of a small city, it is my responsibility to make information available to our public, especially when it concerns public safety, health, and how their tax dollars are being spent.
