Wellington, FL (April 13, 2010) – Diamond Creek’s Rigoletto, ridden by Nicolas Belanger and owned by Diamond Creek Stables, won the championship in the Training Jumper division at the Winter Equestrian Festival’s Spring 4 Show. The Sanctuary Equine Sports Therapy & Rehabilitation Center in Ocala sponsors the division, and Rigoletto and Belanger rode away a $100 gift certificate to the world-class therapy and rehabilitation center.

Trainer Josee Stedding, of Driftwood Stables, was pleased with Rigoletto’s performance in the Training Jumpers. “It was only his second week of showing and his first speed class,” Stedding said, who operates Driftwood Stables with her husband Jack. “Rigoletto was great. He won the first two classes and was only 4/10 of a second behind the winner in the third class.”

Stedding said that in the future the six-year-old Warmblood gelding will move up through the jumper ranks. “Rigoletto is a sale horse but we are really pleased with him,” she said, adding that they will remain at WEF for two more weeks before heading back to Pennsylvania for the summer.

Tommie Turvey to Showcase Equine Extreme Act at 2010 Games

Entertainment to Be Part of Grounds Pass Ticket Offering

April 12, 2010 – LEXINGTON, KY – As the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games approach, guests should not only be looking forward to the competition, but also to the multitude of equine entertainers and demonstrators that will be a part of the Equine Village.

Among the entertainers that are part of the Equine Village is Tommie Turvey, equine extremist. How exactly would one define an equine extremist? Well, Turvey said he demonstrates tricks and stunts that will be quite a different experience for many people.

For Turvey, entertainment came naturally. Turvey’s father was a stunt man and Turvey was labeled as the “class clown” in high school. At the same time, Turvey also loved horses and couldn’t wait to get home from school every day and ride.

Motivation from Moshi 16, by Jane Savoie

Moshi_issue16

The world sure is an interesting place. There is so much to see and to do. And there can be a lot of things to be afraid of.

I’m afraid of fire, skunks, and anything that pops out of the bushes and startles me. It’s not that I really think I’m about to be hurt, it’s just that I’m hard wired to jump when things move fast. All horses have that instinct, we just can’t help it.

Jane knows that I would never intentionally hurt her. But she also knows that I weigh about ten times more than she does, and when she’s on my back the ground is a long way away. She knows that accidents happen and there is always the possibility that she might come off. For that reason she ALWAYS wears a helmet during our training and hacking sessions, and has even started showing in her helmet instead of her top hat.

Life has its hazards. It’s just part of living. But we can take some of the risk out of those hazards by doing thoughtful little things, like wearing a helmet every time we ride.

Do you wear your helmet every time you get on a horse? Start a trend at YOUR barn!

Love, Moshi

FEI and USEF Both Initiate Charges in Abuse Case

FEI_Logo-200

Lausanne, 13 April 2010 – The FEI and the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) have both initiated charges under their respective rules against Michael Morrissey (USA), following an incident in class 101 at the Wellington CSI 2* held on 27 February 2010. The FEI will also be investigating the role of the Ground Jury in this incident.

Given the fact that both the International and National Federations will issue charges for the same set of factual circumstances, the FEI and the USEF will coordinate their existing regulatory procedures to ensure a fair process for the rider and seek the right outcome for the equestrian community.

TAX SAVINGS! You Mean I Can Deduct the Horse?

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010 | Contributors - Press, Horse Care, Miscellaneous, PMG | Comments

Wellington, Florida – April 13, 2010 – Have horses? Want to save money on your taxes? If you haven’t ever heard of Section 179 and don’t feel like reading all 1,071 pages of the Economic Stimulus Bill to find out just how much money the clause could let you save on taxes, then you might want to keep reading this article.

To avoid cutting a larger-than-necessary check to the IRS come April 15th, ask your tax professional if you qualify for a Section 179 deduction. Two key phrases to mention: 1. Expensing Allowance, 2. Bonus Depreciation. Highly qualified CPAs handle taxes for a reason – they’re highly complicated, which is why this article is not meant to explain the two aforementioned benefits, but rather bring an issue to light that you might want to look into before April 15th comes and goes.

When it comes to business asset purchases, including horses and farm equipment, Section 179 might let you save a substantial amount of money on your taxes under certain circumstances. Simply put, you could potentially write off a greater percentage of the total cost of qualified business asset purchases in 2009. There are more stipulations, caps, and circumstances than I would care to mention or you would care to read – ask your tax professional.

Tampa Equestrian Festival Week 2 Wrap-up, April 5-10, 2010, Tournament of Champions

Tampa, FL – April 12, 2010 – It was with speed and grace that Jeffery Welles was able to capture Saturday night’s victory with his top mount Armani during a three-horse jump-off. The pair raced through the finish line in 44.36 seconds after completing a clear short course during the 2010 $200,000 Gene Mische American Invitational presented by G & C Farm at Raymond James Stadium. Peter Leone tried to catch his time with Select, who also left all the rails intact, but the duo’s time of 44.87 seconds would fall just short and take second place. Mac Cone lowered the heights of three fences for a 12 fault score and third place honors.

2008 Olympic course designer Steve Stephens of Palmetto, FL, designed Saturday night’s difficult course. The 13 numbered obstacles featured three double combinations, including a double liverpool combination, an aqueduct wall, a triple bar, and a tall plank fence vertical. The most difficult fences proved to be the first part of the double liverpool combination and the plank fence.

Leslie Howard and Lennox Lewis II were one of nine riders to fall victim to the liverpool combination, but they stopped the clock at 83.01 seconds to be the fastest four-faulter and earn the fourth place award. Howard was one of six four-fault riders, which also included Nicole Shahinian-Simpson, Cara Raether, Georgina Bloomberg, Michael Morrissey, and Hugh Graham.
