WESTPORT, CT – March 20, 2010 — The Fairfield County Hunt Club June Benefit Horse Show Committee is gearing up for its annual “AA-Rated” horse show to benefit The EQUUS Foundation, Inc. to be held June 22-26, 2010 in Westport, Connecticut.
“The EQUUS Foundation is a perfect fit as the beneficiary of our show”, said Co-Chairs Alison Ashman and Catherine Herman. “Now in its 86th year, the Fairfield County Hunt Club has been dedicated to giving back to horses and the equestrian sport. We have been hard at work to make the horse show both exhibitor and spectator friendly by improving the footing on our polo field and providing state of the art footing in the Emerson Burr Ring. The show also offers boutiques throughout the five-day show for spectators.”
The Fairfield County Hunt Club June Benefit Horse Show offers free admission and welcomes the public to come watch national and local equestrians compete, especially at the show’s culminating event, the $25,000 Grand Prix on Saturday, June 26, 2010, presented by Wells Fargo Advisors and George N. Venizelos. Spectators and exhibitors are also welcome to attend the EQUUS Benefit Luncheon held in conjunction with the Grand Prix and enjoy a champagne reception, silent auction, and delicious buffet while watching world class riders and horses navigating over the highest level obstacles at racehorse speeds.
Loxahatchee, FL — March 20, 2010 — On March 16th, the calls started coming in regarding racehorses that were in trouble. When Calder Race Course received the call, Pure Thoughts Horse Rescue’s Florida Thoroughbred Rehab & Placement (FTRP) was immediately contacted. Upon discovering that one of the horses had raced at Calder, the FHBPA advised FTRP to try and get the horse.
Barbie Moline, long-time racing enthusiast and horse welfare advocate, said, “This is exactly why this program was established, to keep the horses safe after their career has ended. I am thankful that Calder Race Course and the FHBPA were so quick to act on this situation.”
The horses were at a facility owned by Brenda Hemphill in Maine. On March 8, the Boston Globe released an article regarding the Hemphill’s facility in which Brenda Hemphill admitted she is a killbuyer. Brad Gaver, cofounder of Pure Thoughts, called Ms. Hemphill who said the horses were camp horses that had been there.
The Cheltenham Gold Cup produced more drama to end a week in which only 3 clear favourites won, producing a succession of unexpected results. Crowds reached an all time high but Britain’s bookies were last night celebrating their 45-million-pound windfall after the odds-on favourite, Kauto Star and his stable companion rival, Denman, failed to win this coveted prize.
Kauto Star was bidding for a third Gold Cup victory and a second in a row but the Paul Nicholls trained 10-year-old had a crashing fall four fences from home after making a blunder early on. Denman, who won in 2008, took up the running and a battle ensued but even with champion jockey Tony McCoy on board, they couldn’t hold off an impressive challenge by younger rival, Imperial Commander (7/1). Locally trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies, this handsome son of Flemensfirth (USA) surged clear to win by seven lengths, giving trainer and jockey Paddy Brennan their first Gold Cup victories. Mon Mome who won the 2009 Grand National finished third.
A cheer of relief erupted from the crowd as Kauto Star returned unscathed. He will now have a well earned rest until next season. Mon Mome will now head to Aintree to attempt to become the first dual Grand national winner since Red Rum and Denman will likely have the Grand National as his principal target next season.
Despite his disappointment on Kauto Star, Ruby Walsh was leading jockey at the festival for the fifth time. Nicky Henderson won the top trainer award.
