January 19 2010 – Expanding the horse-owning population in Kentucky is important to the Kentucky Horse Council (KHC). Through education, the member-based non-profit encourages responsible horse ownership and management practices to build a strong and vibrant equine community.
The Kentucky Horse Council is no stranger to educating new horse owners. In 2009 they released HorseSmarts: Essential Advice for Today’s Horse Owner, an award winning DVD. The 60-minute video, which was shown on KET last summer and fall, includes information on the top 10 things new horse owners should know. The affordable DVD is available for purchase through tack and feed stores and online at www.kentuckyhorse.org/horsesmarts.
“First-time horse owners are often at a disadvantage as there are very few organized hands-on programs for adults to learn about horses and horsemanship skills,” observed KHC Board President Madelyn Millard. “There is so much information available online that it can be difficult for people to sift through and find qualified, reliable information. The Kentucky Horse Council works diligently to ensure that all the information we provide is factual, relevant, and current.” Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=9872
January 19 2010 – The American Horse Council (AHC) is pleased to announce the American Endurance Ride Conference, the American Paint Horse Association, the National Cutting Horse Association, and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association have recently endorsed the Welfare Code of Practice further broadening the industry support of a national code. The AHC drafted the Welfare Code of Practice, which outlines in generic terms what it means for an organization to be committed to the responsible breeding, training, care, use, enjoyment, transport and retirement of horses.
Many associations have undertaken studies, reviews, and initiatives that indicate their commitment to the welfare of their horses. This generic code is simply a continuation of that effort.
“The American Horse Council’s Welfare Code of Practice demonstrates the equine industry’s commitment to the welfare and safety of the horse,” said Dan Metzger, president of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association. “We wholeheartedly endorse these principles and encourage other equine organizations to do so as well.” Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=9869

Dressage Star Steffen Peters Named USEF 2009 Equestrian of the Year; Jessica Ransehousen Honored for a Lifetime of Excellence and Maxance McManamy to Carry Sport into Future
January 16 2010 – Louisville, KY – In January of 2009 Steffen Peters was honored with the USEF’s Equestrian of the Year Award for his uncanny sportsmanship and his achievements on the field of play throughout 2008. In 2010, at the USEF Pegasus Awards dinner he was bestowed the title again – this time for simply blowing the doors off the dressage world in 2009.
Made even sweeter by the fact that the beloved horse who made it all possible picked up the top honors the night before at the 2009 Farnam/Platform Horse of the Year Awards dinner, 2009 is a year that will go down in history as the year of Peters and Ravel.
In April, Peters (San Diego, CA) became only the second American to win the FEI World Cup Dressage Final, and the first to do so in the US when he stormed to victory in Las Vegas. With Ravel, the performance brought the crowd to their feet and then to tears as the 11-year-old Dutch gelding owned by Aikiko Yamazaki proved how much he had improved since his fourth place finish at the 2008 Olympic Games. He looked the very best in the eye and never wavered – putting the historically Euro-centric dressage world on notice that the game had indeed changed. Ravel and Steffen Peters winning the 2009 FEI World Cup Dressage Final.
January 15 2010 Louisville, KY – Annually, five of the USEF’s 130,000 registered horses achieve so much in a year that they are named USEF Horses of Honor and enter the running for the title of Farnam/Platform Horse of the Year.
In 2009 all five of these horses were nothing short of remarkable.
But one forever changed the face of his sport, and with that, Ravel was voted the 2009 USEF Farnam/Platform Horse of the Year.
It began in April at the FEI World Cup Dressage Final when, with the weight of a nation on his 11-year-old shoulders, Ravel trotted back into Las Vegas’ Thomas & Mack Arena after winning the Grand Prix to perform his Freestyle.
Removal of 550 horses in eastern Nevada set to begin next month
Just When We Thought It Couldn’t Get Worse – Government Claims More Than 670,000 Acres Can Only Support 100 to 200 Horses
Dear IDA Members:
We told you this was going to be a long, hard fight – thank you for sticking with us to take action on each and every unacceptable assault by the Obama Administration on our wild horses. We are up against the deeply entrenched special interests who want wild horses removed from public lands so they can conduct business as usual. That means cheap usage of our public land for their private profits at the horses’ and taxpayers’ expense.
It’s time to get public comments in on another large removal of wild horses which is planned by the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM). This time the BLM intends to remove over 500 of the estimated 645 horses living in or near the “Eagle Herd Management Area” in eastern Nevada outside of Ely. While 500 individuals is fewer than the 2,500 horses currently being rounded up and removed from the Calico Complex in northwest Nevada (click here for Calico update), the Eagle roundup is even more ludicrous because it is 125,000 acres larger than Calico, but the government will only allow 100 horses to remain! In Calico, by contrast, 500-900 horses will be left behind in the approximately 500,000-acre public land complex. Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=9858
