Unified Call for an Immediate Moratorium on Wild Horse & Burro Roundups

rounded-upCHICAGO, (EWA) – On November 18, 2009, American Citizens and partners in Canada, the United Kingdom and South Africa delivered the following letter to the President, Congress and the Department of the Interior.

A Unified Call for an Immediate Moratorium on Wild Horse & Burro Roundups

And a humane, fiscally responsible plan for preserving and protecting the iconic, free-roaming wild horses and burros of the American West

President Obama, Members of Congress and the Department of the Interior:

We, the undersigned, request major changes to the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Wild Horse and Burro program. This must begin with an immediate moratorium on all roundups. While we agree that the program is in dire need of reform, and we applaud your Administration’s commitment to avoid BLM’s suggested mass-killing of horses, the plan outlined in October by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar raises numerous concerns. An American Shetland Pony named Cornerstone’s Valiant Man, owned by Sherri Jolliff, attended the FFA National Convention.

Indianapolis, IN (November 19, 2009) – He may have been small, but that didn’t keep an American Shetland Pony named Cornerstone’s Valiant Man from making a big impact when he attended the 82nd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. The Shetland Pony, owned by Sherri Jolliff, represented the American Shetland Pony Club (ASPC) and the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and was a big hit with the horse enthusiasts attending the convention.

“We were proud to have the opportunity to support the FFA and share our small equines with them at their national convention, through our partnership with the USEF,” said Johnny Robb, Director of Marketing for the ASPC. “Our small equines are ideal for FFA projects.”

Amber Montgomery, of KM Stables in Alexandria, Indiana, brought Cornerstone’s Valiant Man to the convention, where the Shetland drew lots of attention in the USEF booth and introduced FFA horse lovers to the small but mighty breed. “The American Shetland Pony is a recognized breed through the USEF and we were pleased to have them represented at our booth,” said Lori Nelson of the USEF. Overwhelming Support for Clean Sport Campaign at FEI General Assembly

FEI_CleanSport-logo-200Copenhagen (DEN), 19 November 2009 – In a landmark moment for equestrian sport, the FEI General Assembly today voted overwhelmingly in favour of new Equine Anti-Doping and Controlled Medication Regulations which will ensure the welfare of the horse and guarantee a fair playing field. A series of far reaching recommendations – part of the Clean Sport Campaign led by the Ljungqvist and Stevens Commissions – were also adopted by a massive majority amongst the 105 National Federations represented in Copenhagen.

Delegates also approved in a close vote a new Prohibited Substances List itemising more than 1000 substances not allowed in competition. The adoption of the so-called “Progressive List” now permits in-competition use of a limited number of medications under strictly prescribed limits.

FEI President HRH Princess Haya thanked the delegates on behalf of the sport for their support of the Clean Sport Campaign. “This is a true landmark moment in the history of our sport,” HRH Princess Haya commented. “The overwhelming support of the National Federations for the Clean Sport Campaign is proof that we are moving in the right direction thanks to the incredible work done by the Ljungqvist and Stevens Commissions. This vote has given us the power to roll out Clean Sport and allow us to restore the public image of our sport as a clean and uncorrupt product.” Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=8941

Old Friends to Open Auxiliary Farm in New York

CabinCreekFarmOct2009008HGEORGETOWN, KY – NOVEMBER 18, 2009 – Michael Blowen, founder and president of Old Friends, is pleased to announce the opening of his organization’s first satellite facility for retired Thoroughbreds. Cabin Creek, a 40-acre farm just outside Saratoga in Greenfield Center, NY, will begin receiving horses immediately. An official opening and celebration is planned for July 22, 2010.

This premiere auxiliary space will be named in honor of trainer Bobby Frankel, who passed away earlier this week after a battle with leukemia. A native New Yorker, Frankel was a long supporter of the Old Friends mission and earned many of his greatest victories at New York racetracks. The farm will formally be known as “Old Friends at Cabin Creek: The Bobby Frankel Division.”

Owned by Joann and Mark Pepper, Cabin Creek features 12 stalls, two round pens, five finished paddocks, and has raw space available for development and growth. The first resident, Moonshadow Gold – a 10-year-old New York-bred gelding acquired through the efforts of several equine-welfare advocates – will arrive later this week.
