Buzz for Gulf Coast Winter Series Is All Good! Thom Brede Joins Staff

Harrodsburg, KY — October 29, 2009 — The 2010 Gulf Coast Winter Series has become the hot topic among the equestrian community from coast to coast. Under the management of Bob Bell and Janet McCarroll, the Gulf Coast Winter Series has just announced the addition of Thom Brede to assist Allen Rheinheimer this season as a Technical Director. “Thom’s been managing large horse shows for years, he’s one of the most sought after hunter judges, and brings a host of talents to our series,” Bell shared.

While it’s expected that Brede’s primary focus will be on the hunter divisions, Bell added that having Brede’s wealth of knowledge on hand would be an even greater asset to ensure exhibitors needs can be anticipated in and out of the rings. “Tom has been part of some of best horse shows in our country and working with Allen Rheinheimer, I am sure our circuit will be better for it,” Bell said.

Held at the Harrison County Equestrian Center in Gulfport, MS, 2010 will mark the 11th year of the winter series. This year’s six-week event runs February 10th through March 21st. Looking for an expression of gratitude to their many loyal exhibitors co-chairs Bob Bell and Janet McCarroll knew the perfect gift. Bell said, “With all the changes our country is going through we decided to make some changes for the good of our exhibitors. One is by maintaining the same pricing we’ve had since 2008.” Also returning will be the “U Pick UP” feed and bedding at reduced prices. There will be specific times of day, both morning and afternoon, where the exhibitors can meet show staff at the feed – bedding trailers to purchase their needs and save money by not having the goods delivered to their stalls.  If preferred the show will still offer the normal feed and bedding delivery service.  Details, prices and hours will be posted in the show office. FEI World Cup Dressage 2009/2010 – Round 2, Lyon

The Netherlands' Anky Van Grunsven and Salinero made it two-in-a-row when winning the second leg of the FEI World Cup Dressage series at Lyon, France tonight.

ANKY AND SALINERO MAKE IT TWO IN A ROW AT LYON

30 October 2009 – Triple Olympic champion Anky Van Grunsven of The Netherlands finished a long way ahead of the rest of the field when securing her second consecutive victory with Salinero in the 2009 FEI World Cup Dressage series at Lyon, France tonight.

The absence of her fellow-countryman, Edward Gal, after an unfortunate accident with Sisther de Jeu yesterday, left her clear favourite to top the scoreboard and she won with a comfortable margin of more than five percentage points over runner-up Monica Theodorescu from Germany riding Whisper.  Third place went to Denmark’s Nathalie Zu Sayn-Wittgenstein and Rigoletto whose indoor season debut on her home turf at Odense two weeks ago was spoiled by the gelding’s nervousness which led to their retirement during the Grand Prix.

Tonight however the 34 year old Danish Princess produced an excellent Freestyle to finish ahead of Dutchman Hans-Peter Minderhoud with Exquis Escapado. Read more> http://www.horsesinthesouth.com/article/article_detail.aspx?id=8722

Citizens Call for Immediate Moratorium on Wild Horse Round-Ups

CHICAGO, (EWA) – The Equine Welfare Alliance (EWA), an umbrella organization comprising over 60 member organizations, announced today it is joining the growing chorus calling for an immediate moratorium on the gathering of wild horses and burros by all government agencies. Already calling for a moratorium are The Cloud Foundation, The Animal Law Coalition and noted expert, wildlife ecologist, Craig Downer and Mustang author Deanne Stillman.

On October 7, Ken Salazar, head of the Department of Interior (DOI) and Bob Abbey, head of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), publicly admitted the deficiencies in the current management of the Wild Horse and Burro Program in announcing the development of a new plan. “The Salazar plan would simply throw the herds off of their historical Western lands set aside for them in the 1971 Wild Horse and Burro Act and put them into long term holding facilities which it renames “refuges” explains EWA’s Vicki Tobin.

In an August letter to Bob Abbey, Congressmen Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) outlined the deficiencies in the current program over the past several years. To date, none of the deficiencies have been corrected and until range studies can be completed, there is no scientific evidence justifying the removal of wild horses and burros from the land. Following a GAO report in 2008 that found that the BLM did not have adequate funding to support the estimated 37,000 horses they had in holding pens, Congress generously increased their budget. Upcoming Cowboy Christmas

The US Equine Rescue League (USERL) is planning a Cowboy Christmas event to be held Sunday, November 15, 2009 from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Wild West Town at Southern Breezes, 4126 Medlin Road, Monroe, NC 28112. There will be horse drawn wagon rides, an opportunity to meet some of the rescue horses, a petting zoo, and plenty of shopping for the cowboys and cowgirls on your Christmas list. The USERL will be selling hot chocolate, hot mulled cider and baked goods to keep everyone warm.

The proceeds from this event will benefit horses rescued from abuse and neglect in the Central Piedmont Region of North Carolina. The USERL is also looking for volunteers to help that day and for vendors to sell their wares.
