KRISTINA COOK LEADS BRITAIN TO DOUBLE EUROPEAN GOLD
Fontainebleau (FRA), 23 – 27 September 2009 – Kristina Cook (GBR), long renowned as one of the world’s best horsewomen, at last won the major international title that has eluded her thus far in her illustrious career when she headed an all-conquering British team at the HSBC FEI European Eventing Championship in Fontainebleau (FRA).
She has also set a new record, as the first mother to win an individual gold medal, and she now has the full set of individual European medals, having won silver in 1993 and bronze in 1997.
Britain easily won their 8th successive European team gold – their 21st since the European Championships started in 1953 – a task eased by the demise across country of the German team and also that of the French, whose silver medal evaporated when their cross-country hero Jean Teulère had to withdraw Espoir de la Mare before the final horse inspection. News: The Alltech FEI Dressage Championships had everyone on the edge of their seats as the Netherlands’ Edward Gal and Adelinde Cornelissen traded off for gold throughout the competition. But it was Gal who would emerge on top in the Grand Prix freestyle aboard phenom Moorlands Totilas for another world-record score of 90.70 percent. The 9-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion (Gribaldi—Lominka) had already broken one world record in the Grand Prix (84.08%) at the European Championships, but then Cornelissen earned gold in the Special aboard Parzival (84.02%) and set a world record of her own. The FEI also announced this week that, unless she appeals, German Dressage rider Isabell Werth, will be suspended from all competitions for six months. The punishment stems from a doping incident in which Werth’s horse Whisper, tested positive for a banned substance, at the Wiesbaden CDI in Germany at the end of May. Read more…

Some news just out any American show jumpers hoping to be selected for next year’s World Equestrian Games. The Selection Trials will be held at The Palm Beach International Equestrian Centre in Wellington Florida next February and March over the course of five trials during two weeks.

Blue Hors Matine, the stunning grey dressage mare, who won silver at the Aachen 2006 World Equestrian Games in the Grand Prix Freestyle, and bronze in the Grand Prix Special has been retired to stud. Ridden by Denmark’s Andreas Helgstrand, her freestyle became something of an urban legend, with the YouTube video being watched more than nine MILLION times.

A National Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement could harm family-scale farmers. Attend a hearing or submit written comments today!
The USDA is holding hearings across the country in September and October to allow the public — especially fresh vegetable growers and handlers — to comment on a proposed agreement that would authorize the development and implementation of production and handling regulations for a long list of fresh vegetables, primarily leafy greens.
The proposed marketing agreement would allow corporate leafy green handlers to attach a USDA-backed “food safety seal” to lettuce, spinach, cabbage and other vegetables. But, since the standards would be written by big industry, it would be impractical for local farmers at farmers markets, CSAs and roadside stands to use that same seal. This marketing ploy could lead many consumers to assume that vegetables from industrial-scale monoculture farms (primarily in California) are safer than the leafy greens at local farmers markets.
Although claiming to be a food safety measure, there’s no proof that these standards would actually prevent food borne illness. Standards in California, which would likely provide the basis for the national program, have not prevented contamination. To the contrary, on September 18, a signatory to the California Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement recalled 1,715 cartons of spinach due to salmonella contamination!

-On the 29th Advocates and caring citizens will meet in the capitol for “Mustangs on the Hill” to push passage of the Restore Our American Mustangs (ROAM) act (§1579) which would establish greater protections for wild horses and return some of the 19 million acres taken away from them over the past 40 years. This landmark bill is sponsored by Senator Byrd. The day will begin with a 9:30am press conference (Hope Ryden, a writer of the Wild Horse and Burro Act, along with Crow Elder and Historian, Howard Boggess, will be speaking in addition to the honorable Congressman Grijalva, a crucial supporter of the wild horses and preservation of wild lands.
