Tomorrow, after the USHJA International Hunter Derby and before the $25,000 Welcome Prix, the long-awaited Groom’s Class, sponsored by Shirley Murphy in memory of Timber Point, will take place.
“Sponsoring the Groom’s Class lets me thank all of the grooms who have shown kindness to our horses who are very much a part of our lives,” commented Murphy.
The class is open to all professional grooms working at the Gulf Coast Winter Classic. The groom must be nominated by a trainer, owner or rider. The Nomination Fee is $25.00 and may be paid at the office.
Horses must be presented as if they were heading to the show ring for the rider to mount and show. Cleanliness, condition and possession of proper equipment a groom and rider might need at the ring within reason will be evaluated by the judge. Examples are a crop, hole punch, extra spurs, number, boot polish, rub rag ad of course, Xanax (for adults, trainers and show managers).
Besides bragging rights, the winning groom will receive a $500 cash prize. Second through sixth placings will each receive $100 cash.
