WESTPORT, CT – October 1, 2012 – The EQUUS Foundation and the Fairfield County Hunt Club are proud to announce that the Club’s June Benefit Horse Show was granted the coveted designation, Heritage Competition, by the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF). The Heritage designation is an honor bestowed by the USEF, the governing body of the equestrian sport, and is the highest honor that can be achieved by a horse show in the United States. Only 14 horse shows of the more than 2,600 USEF competitions across the United States can claim this distinction.
The EQUUS Foundation has been the show beneficiary since the Foundation was first established in 2003, and has awarded over $2 million in grants to charities that ensure the well-being of horses and foster the horse-human bond, especially for those with special needs. None of this would have been possible without the patronage of Fairfield County Hunt Club June Show. “Giving Back” has been a long standing commitment of the Fairfield County Hunt Club June Horse Show, with each of the more than 250 classes sponsored by an individual or local business making a donation to the show beneficiary.
The June Benefit Horse Show has been continually operating since 1924, and is the highlight of equestrian activities at the Club. The show is a dynamic, community event with free admission that welcomes the public to experience the equestrian sport up close and personal.
2013 June Show to Celebrate Club’s 90th Anniversary & Foundation’s 10th Birthday!
“Our goal for the June Show is to preserve the traditions of the past while still changing to meet the needs and demands of the ever-evolving equestrian industry,” said Show Managers William Aguirre and J. P. Goddard.
Planning is already underway for the 2013 June Show, which will include improvements to the schedule of classes for competitors and again feature the Paddock Boutiques, Pet Parade, and Family Day – activities that were hugely popular in 2012.
The Grand Finale – the $25,000 Fairfield Grand Prix and EQUUS Foundation Benefit Luncheon – will not only recognize the Club’s 90th Anniversary; it will also celebrate the Foundation’s 10th Birthday.
“What started as a local effort is now a nationwide campaign on behalf of horses and their extraordinary ability to empower, teach and heal. This is a birthday party you won’t want to miss,” said Lynn Coakley, EQUUS Foundation President.

“We are proud of our commitment to hosting a first-class competition while also raising funds for our charitable partner, the EQUUS Foundation. We proudly accept this distinction on behalf of all Club Members, sponsors, volunteers, and competitors who over the many years have made this Show such a success,” said incoming June Show Co-Chairs Jane FitzGerald, Michele Ippolito and Jennifer Ross.
The designation of a USEF Heritage Competition is reserved for those competitions that have been in existence for a quarter century or more, promoted and grown the equestrian sport, and made a contribution to the community outside the gates of the horse show by achieving, maintaining and promoting the equestrian ideals of sportsmanship and competition.
