Elizabeth Boyd in the irons aboard Roc My World on course in the $2,500 USHJA Hunter Derby

The Classic Company’s twentieth anniversary of the Charleston Classic kicked off Wednesday with the young pony classes. The Thirsty Thursday “Come as you are” party, held and sponsored by Red’s Ice House and Bohicket Marina, was a huge success! All exhibitors were treated to a night of cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres.

Friday night, all eyes were turned toward the $2,500 USHJA International Hunter Derby sponsored by Kiara Barnet. The ringside was packed as all enjoyed complimentary cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.

Twenty-three riders negotiated the course designed by Allen Rheinheimer and Joe Carnicom. Elizabeth Boyd of Camden, SC, rode Roc My World, owned by Tequestrian Farms, LLC of Wellington, FL, to the win with a combined score of 183, just beating out her second place score of 181 aboard Marksmann, owned by Marilla Van Buerren of Middleton, RI.

The weather has been perfect and according to the forecast, it looks like those showing at Mullet Hall Equestrian Center will be in for a continued treat and break from the heat.

“The show grounds are great here because of its close location to the water and consistent breeze,” said Bob Bell, President of Classic Company.

Those showing at the Charleston Classic were greeted with the addition of another competition ring at the show grounds. “The base was installed a few months ago and we did the final dressing last week,” said Bell. “What a great way to celebrate this show’s twentieth anniversary with further growth of the Charleston shows. We’re looking forward to even more growth next year when we plan to offer a Grand Prix.”

Today’s schedule includes the Amateur Owners, big equitation classes, pony, children and adult hunter competitions. Then, all are welcome to unwind at the complimentary wine and cheese party under the Grand Pavilion. Don’t miss the morning Mimosas on Sunday – ring side, of course. And, the highly anticipated Supreme Kahuna Pony Classic will also be awarded Sunday to the leading Small, Medium and Large ponies as well as the leading Small, Medium and Large Green ponies.
