Zulu Interagro Brings Equine Chic to Allure’s December Issue

New York, NY (December 6, 2016) – Chiseled features, lustrous locks, and elegant forms are typical of any photo shoot for Allure magazine, and in the 2016 December issue an equine supermodel sported his ravishing good looks alongside 2015 Model of the Year Gigi Hadid for Allure’s feature spread. The 21-year-old Hadid posed au naturel while reclining on Zulu (who was also au naturel) in a stunning black and white image that has become the cover photo for Allure magazine’s Facebook page as of mid-November. Hadid, who is also the 2016 December issue cover girl, appears at ease on the 14-year-old Lusitano gelding, despite the lack of clothes. Zulu’s photogenic baroque appearance and laid back attitude made him the epitome of the equine supermodel.

Bred by Interagro Lusitanos of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Zulu Interagro (Profano Interagro x Trovoada Interagro) was imported to the US in 2008 as part of the Lusitano Collection International Horse Auction held in Wellington, Florida. Zulu’s owner, Athene von Hirschberg, came to the Auction looking for a versatile, compact, athletic horse and found what she was looking for in Zulu. Over the years she and Zulu have competed up to the FEI levels in dressage, working equitation, 15-mile rides, hunter paces, and eventually began his career as an equine supermodel. Zulu’s photogenic qualities were first utilized by Italian fashion designer Emilio Pucci, who featured the black horse in a spread at the International Polo Club Palm Beach, posing with two models in Pucci’s flagrant designs on the polo fields. Von Hirschberg’s friendship with Cari Swanson of Cari Swanson Productions, which has provided horses for major motion pictures such as Hidalgo, Winter’s Tale, and The Horse Whisperer, served as the catalyst to launch Zulu’s modeling career into the big leagues. Swanson received the casting call for a horse of Zulu’s temperament and appearance for the major international fashion magazine, and von Hirschberg was more than happy to oblige.

“He handled the entire ordeal like a pro,” said von Hirschberg. “Obviously he was required to stand and remain calm for a long period of time, with people in various positions and bright camera flashes, but he took it all in stride and even got bored and began nibbling on his handlers. His personality and athleticism set him apart, and he really does anything I ask of him.”

In addition to competing through the Prix St. Georges level in dressage, Zulu has also been a champion competitor in working equitation, a discipline mirroring the techniques utilized by working horse and rider pairs and requiring a diverse range of talents. For Zulu’s breeder, his combination of beauty, athleticism, trainability, and an exceptional temperament are a reflection of their breeding program, which has spent over 40 years carefully developing the modern Lusitano sporthorse. Zulu’s sire, Profano Interagro, is a son of the famous Legendario do Mirante. Legendario’s sire, Novilheiro MV, made history in some of the most prestigious show jumping arenas of Europe under the guidance of Olympic Silver Medalist John Whitaker. The Lusitano stallion was an international show jumping champion and one of the most famous Lusitanos of all time, with a career that included winning the British Showjumping Championship and leading the European rankings for prize money earned. Profano’s influence in many Interagro pedigrees has yielded top performing dressage, driving, and equitation horses, including a 2016 Rio Paralympic mount in Zizifo Interagro.

But despite their accomplishments in the show ring, Zulu’s ancestors probably never had a nude supermodel lounging on their backs, a unique and impressive addition to the resume of Interagro’s progeny.

With over 40 years of experience breeding, training, and exporting Lusitanos, Interagro’s mission is to preserve the exceptional bloodlines and qualities of the breed while showcasing their talent, beauty, and intelligence, especially in the FEI and sport horse disciplines. Established in 1975 by Dr. Paulo Gavião Gonzaga, Interagro’s initial vision was to preserve and restore the original foundational Lusitano bloodlines and lineages, many of which were in danger of extinction following the Portuguese Revolution of 1974. Through meticulous breeding, exceptional care, and world-class training, the Interagro Lusitanos of today continue that legacy as they compete across four continents.

Katherine Bateson-Chandler Featured on Horses in the Morning Radio Show

Wellington, FL (December 1, 2016) — With the winter dressage show season fast approaching in south Florida and the World Equestrian Games scheduled to be held on the United States east coast less than two years from now, top U.S. dressage riders are filled with anticipation. Horse Radio Network’s talk show Horses in the Morning invited one of these riders, Grand Prix competitor Katherine Bateson-Chandler, to the broadcast’s “Omega Alpha Equine Monday Edition” to give the inside scoop on what it’s like to prepare for the show ring as the gaze of international dressage turns to the U.S.

An online podcast of Bateson-Chandler’s interview is now available on Horses in the Morning’s website, in which Bateson-Chandler shares her thoughts on planning for the World Equestrian Games (WEG), the upcoming Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida, her bond with her superstar mount Alcazar, and the invaluable boost she gains from training with British Olympian Carl Hester.

The road to the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) will offer triumphs and inevitable challenges for standout horse-and-rider pairs who hope to compete in the Tryon, North Carolina event. Bateson-Chandler is already working hard to prepare for the WEG – one of the biggest events on the global sporting calendar – and spent this past summer competing in Europe and training with Carl Hester.

The radio show was quick to get right to the question on most riders’ minds – one that Bateson-Chandler was happy to answer – which was whether or not she has actually ridden Valegro while at Hester’s facility. “I have!” she said. “Carl and Charlotte Dujardin both are very open with their horses, so pretty much everybody rides everything. That’s great fun!  And Valegro truly is what he seems to be – he is the most special horse in the world, and I have been around a lot of special horses, international and otherwise. There is something about him that is so gentle. He is such an old soul.”

Despite Valegro’s allure, there is another horse that fills Bateson-Chandler’s heart. “One hundred percent I believe horses have a ‘person,’” she explained. “Alcazar is my special boy.” The Dutch-bred gelding affectionately known as “Lonzie,” owned by Jane Clark, has trained up the levels to Grand Prix with Bateson-Chandler. “When you spend every day with a horse, there is a bond you can’t describe; you have to feel it. We know each other so well. He has a lot of character and tries really hard, with enough spice that keeps every day interesting. He is back up and running after colic surgery last summer, and he feels better than ever.”

It takes years to develop the superior strength needed for international competition. Muscle development, plus the best feeding and supplement regimen, is crucial. Bateson-Chandler uses several different all-natural Omega Alpha products to keep Alcazar and her other equine partners in top shape. “Across the board, the horses like the Omega Alpha Gastra-FX. Omega Alpha’s philosophy is to create healthy horses by starting with the gut, and I totally agree. Every vet I speak to says to start with the intestines, the inside of the horse.” Bateson-Chandler’s supplement of choice for equine pain relief is Omega Alpha’s Antiflam. “Antiflam is amazing for my high performance horses working at the international level. I Iove the thought of taking inflammation out of their muscles in a completely natural way.”

As plans for the 2018 World Equestrian Games begin to form, Bateson-Chandler is first intent on the Wellington show series at hand. With her personal and professional mentor Olympian Debbie McDonald, she will choose Florida shows to compete in and will look toward next summer in Europe, as well. She will project backwards from the WEG, planning her qualifying period and where she needs to be month-by-month, season-by-season. “I always have a greater idea in mind of what I want to do, but again, you learn that things can change. If you wait until the year of the championships to plan, you are behind the eight ball. Everyone is planning now, to be honest, even towards the Tokyo Olympics. Absolutely, this is a very important season.”

Equus Film Festival Welcomes “Protect the Harvest” as Its 2016 Title Sponsor

New York, NY (October 25, 2016): EQUUS Film Festival, the only horse focused movie, art and literary gathering in America, is proud to name “Protect the Harvest” as the title sponsor of its annual event to be held in New York City on November 17-20. Protect the Harvest is a non-profit organization that focuses on the betterment of life for all animals, including horses.

Protect the Harvest is a national pro-agriculture coalition founded by Lucas Oil Products, Inc. CEO, Forrest Lucas.

“One of the major concerns of Protect the Harvest is how to protect horses living in the wild,” said Lucas.  “While not everyone agrees on how to do that, many horse lovers agree that we don’t want our wild horses dying from starvation or dehydration and that something must be done.”

“We believe that smaller herds will help preserve their freedoms and their health. Opening up a dialogue on how to best solve these issues and protect Range Lands is something that needs to be discussed by ranchers and horse lovers.”

“The Wild Horse issue is only one of the many areas that EQUUS Film Festival focuses on and now with the help of Protect the Harvest, we will be able to continue to give the many filmmakers a place to showcase their hard work that has resulted in wonderful films that need to be seen and shared,” commented EFF Founder, Lisa Diersen.

The EQUUS Film Festival also takes a selection of its films to various “Tour Stops” throughout the year. “Our goal is to showcase our filmmakers, and this title sponsorship is going to allow a selection of these horse films to be shown at more locations,” added co-organizer Diana De Rosa.

This year’s EQUUS Film Festival begins on Thursday night, November 17 with a Welcome Reception where the horse loving public is invited to meet the many filmmakers, authors and artists (you must reserve your free ticket by going to Eventbrite via the website). November 18-19 will feature films from 12:00 noon to 11:00 p.m. at the Village East Cinema (and will include the Li’l Herc two-hour free children’s screening).

On Sunday, November 20, the WINNIE Awards will be given out at The Wild Horses of Sable Island Gallery. For more information, a time schedule about this year’s EQUUS Film Festival, and a link to purchasing and/or reserving tickets, visit the website at www.equusfilmfestival.net.

ABOUT THE EQUUS FILM FESTIVAL: The annual EQUUS Film Festival, founded in 2013 by Lisa Diersen, is the first event of its kind to offer a home to the storytellers of the horse world, with films, documentaries, videos, commercials and shorts from around the world and also cultural elements of fine equestrian art and literature.

This year’s EQUUS Film Festival will take place November 17-20 in New York City. For more about the EQUUS Film Festival films, contact Lisa Diersen at lisa@EQUUSfilmfestival.net or 630-272-3077, and for sponsorships and press, contact Diana De Rosa, dderosa1@optonline.net, 516-848-4867. www.EQUUSfilmfestival.net.

Exclusive showing of Sundance and Toronto Film Festival winning film Dark Horse

Lexington, KY. October 7, 2016 — Maker’s Mark Secretariat Center (MMSC), a premier non-profit re-schooling facility for adoptable Thoroughbreds located at the Kentucky Horse Park, hosted a movie night featuring the award-winning documentary, Dark Horse.

The Dark Horse Movie Night took place on Thursday, October 6th at the historic Kentucky Theater at 214 East Main Street. The money raised from ticket proceeds will benefit MMSC’s initiatives to find a second career and future homes for off the track Thoroughbreds. Each horse is taught new skill sets through their re-schooling program while embracing the breed’s physical and emotional strengths and limitations.

Dark Horse is a documentary based on a true story about Dream Alliance, a horse born and bred by a syndicate in a depressed South Wales mining village. This horse performed against all odds and conquered the world of racing.

“We wanted to switch into fall gear by inviting the Lexington community to a fun, family friendly evening that we hope will bring both Lexington community members as well as the equestrian world together,” said Director of Maker’s Mark Secretariat Center, Susanna Thomas. “With the constant support of our community members, we are capable of sharing our story and mission, which is able to leave an indelible mark in our hearts and transform the lives of Thoroughbreds.”

The event had open seating; VIP tickets provided patrons with access to the complimentary wine bar.

Horse Radio Network Hits 5,000 Episodes

Horse Radio Network Hits Record Episode Milestone

Ocala, FL (October 1, 2016) – The Horse Radio Network announced today that they’ve reached a record 5,000 published podcast episodes since the company’s launch in August of 2008 when the network began with just one show, The Stable Scoop Radio Show.

Not long after Stable Scoop was born, however, a second show was produced. This one, titled “The 2010 Radio Show” covered all things related to the World Equestrian Games held in Lexington, Kentucky that year. The early success of these two shows became the leverage (and inspiration) for eight more shows produced by HRN, including the wildly popular daily show, Horses in the Morning.

Starting with just two hosts and one adventurous sponsor, the Horse Radio Network now features 27 hosts, over six thousand guest segments, dozens of media partners, and some of the biggest sponsors in the equestrian industry.  HRN shows cover a variety of interests like carriage driving, eventing, dressage, horsemanship, and life!

HRN founder and CEO, Glenn the Geek, says, “I am so proud of my team, who has worked endless hours to make this happen. We are highly respected in the podcasting world because of our dedication to making this technology the leading new media platform in the world.”

“Most of all,” Glenn says, “having a partner you can trust and rely on is invaluable for the success of any small business. In this case, it is my wife, Jennifer, who has devoted her time, energy, and incredible knowledge to this endeavor. For that, I am truly grateful.”

“As Glenn’s first co-host at HRN, I had no idea what kind of adventure we were embarking on,” says Helena Bee, host of the Stable Scoop show. “Neither of us knew where this journey would take us, but we had big visions for where it could go. Our listeners have been a huge part of our success.  We cannot thank them enough for joining us on this journey, and for being such great traveling companions!”

Listening to shows on the Horse Radio Network is very easy. Listeners can stream or download episodes at their convenience on iTunes, any podcast player, the HRN website, or by downloading the FREE Horse Radio app for iOS or Android.
