Legacy Horse Statue Dedication at the Kentucky Horse Park

March 16, 2011 — Lexington, KY — The Lexington Convention and Visitors Bureau (LCVB) officially dedicated a life-size statue of Big Lex to the International Museum of the Horse. This version of the Lexington Convention and Visitors Bureau’s “blue horse” was signed by all gold medal winning athletes during the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

The signed statue along with a display describing the eight disciplines featured at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games is now housed as a permanent exhibit in the Sport Horse Gallery at the International Museum of the Horse. Big Lex will serve as a permanent reminder of the tremendous success of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

Big Lex was inspired by Lexington, the great stallion from the late 1800s who was named in honor of the city of his birth. The greatest sire of his time, Lexington helped to solidify the title of “Horse Capital of the World” for the city. Lexington still holds the record for number of years he lead America’s sire list with 14 consecutive years and two additional years. On permanent loan from the Smithsonian, the bones of Lexington are now on display at the International Museum of the Horse.

DEATH OF AN IRISH LEGEND, By Louise Parkes

Iris Kellett, one of the most influential figures in the history of Irish equestrian sport, died last Friday aged 85. She leaves behind a long legacy of excellence as a competitor, trainer, breeder and horse producer but will be best remembered for her own hugely successful career and for her mentoring of many of Ireland’s greatest Jumping riders including Eddie Macken.

In 1935 at the age of nine, Iris walked her pony, Sparklet, from her home at Mespil Road in Ballsbridge to win her first rosette at the RDS – and she never looked back. She placed herself firmly on the map when clinching the British Ladies National Championship in 1947 and, that same year, was a member of Ireland’s very first civilian Jumping side that competed in Nations Cups at Newport and Blackpool against teams from England, Sweden and Italy. Until then the sport of Nations Cup Jumping had been restricted to members of the military. She already had 150 wins at national level under her belt.

She was always ahead of her time. At the age of 12 she was already teaching large numbers of pupils at her father, Harry Kellett’s, riding school in Mespil Road. She carried a confidence and competence into everything in which she would become involved.

NO SECRET SO CLOSE excerpt #10, by Claire Dorotik

NO SECRET SO CLOSE is the story of a the most unthinkable betrayal humanly possible — at only 24 years old, Claire Dorotik’s father has been murdered, her mother arrested, and now, in a sinister twist of fate, Claire’s mother points the finger at Claire, accusing her of killing her own father. Battling the feelings of loss, abandonment, terror, and dissociation, and also learning about them, Claire struggles to stay in her master’s program for psychotherapy. However, when Claire’s brothers also betray her and side with her mother, Claire is left all alone to care for the 18 horses she and her mother owned. As the story unfolds, what is revealed is the horses’ amazing capacity for empathy in the face of human trauma, and the almost psychic ability to provide the author with what had been taken from her. Arising from these horrifying circumstances, the most unthinkable heroes — the horses — show Claire that life is still worth living.

“Hi Claire”, she said, in her bubbly, if somewhat tense voice.

Trying to disguise my shock, I replied, “Oh hi Debbie.” It was a big horse show, and as far as I knew, she had only been showing at the smaller shows.

“Yeah”, I responded. This again, I thought to myself.

Darragh Kenny Leads the Fun & Games at Fete Cheval for The EQUUS Foundation

Wellington, FL – March 15, 2011 – This year’s Fete Cheval was a huge hit that featured fantastic riders performing games on rescue horses on Friday, March 11, 2011. The beautiful night, presented by Foundation Farm, benefitted The EQUUS Foundation, which helps equestrian and horse related charities across the United States. There was a beautiful dinner for guests, catered by White Horse Tavern Catering on the grounds of the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center at their Special Events Tent.

The evening’s events got underway at 6:00 p.m. with cocktails and a silent auction, which were followed by a dinner buffet. The main event, the Gymkhana Games, got underway at 8:00 p.m., with horses provided by Pure Thoughts Horse Rescue and a group of world class riders. This year’s riders included Max Amaya, Derek Braun, Nick Dello Joio, Sandy Ferrell, Patricia Griffith, Charlie Jayne, Darragh Kenny, Kate Oliver, Kim Prince, Havens Schatt, Louise Serio, Shane Sweetnam, Jimmy Torano, and McLain Ward. As part of the silent auction, guests could bid to become a guest rider, which went to junior rider Alex Crown. The judges for the night were Ralph Caristo and Leo Conroy, along with special guest judge Kim Jacobs, with emcee David Distler.

National Federations Request More Time for Consultation on Restructuring

Lausanne (SUI), 14 March 2011 – Following requests from National Federations, the FEI Bureau has agreed to extend the period of consultation on new FEI Statutes that would allow for restructuring of the current FEI governance model. The vote on restructuring had originally been scheduled to take place at an Extraordinary General Assembly at the FEI’s new headquarters in Lausanne (SUI) on 6 May 2011.

The consultation process, which started on 18 January, sought input from the National Federations and the Bureau on the restructuring proposal. Following this input, a first draft of the revised Statutes was sent to the National Federations on 11 February, with a deadline of 25 March for receipt of further comments.

However, a number of National Federations have requested an extended timeframe for the consultative process and the Bureau has acceded to this request.

The Extraordinary General Assembly will still take place on 6 May as scheduled and the agenda will include a vote on statutory changes relating to FEI Development, a session on the format of an annual Sports Forum, and a debate on the restructuring process, ensuring the input of National Federations.

The official opening of the new FEI Headquarters in Lausanne will also take place on 6 May after the Extraordinary General Assembly.

Japan Equine Relief

The WHIA is collecting supplies and cash for equine businesses in Japan following the massive earthquake. We are working with the U.S. state department and Japanese associations. Details will follow soon!

Executive Director Catherine Masters lived in Japan for five years and her heart is broken by the horrible natural disaster in Japan. She is asking all of the WHIA members to help her raise money and supplies for the victims and the horses.

As soon as we are confident that our money and supplies will get to the proper authorities, we will contact you again. As you know, the breeders, the riding clubs and the horse owners will need everything. CASH is probably the best thing we can send. Due to massive destruction it may take us a little while to get the proper channels working with us.

Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center Acknowledged on CBS12 for the Success of Recovering Olympic Dressage Rider Courtney King Dye

Loxahatchee, FL – March 10, 2011 – Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center has played a part in the recovery of Olympic Dressage rider, Courtney King Dye. Last March a tragic accident left King Dye with a brain injury unable to remember, walk, or speak. After months of therapy and with the help of the program and horses at Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center, King Dye is on the road to success. Vinceremos, however, is only one part of the incredible team that has helped with her recovery as Arlene White and Stacey Brown have also played tremendous roles in this remarkable story.

CBS12 acknowledged Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center on February 25, 2011 for their part in the success of King Dye’s recovery. The segment featured Vinceremos’ work with King Dye including statements from King Dye about her recovery. Since she was able to start therapy King Dye has devoted hours a day to her recovery. She is determined to return as a champion and her goal is to once again compete. She is counting on the animal she loves to help her make a full recovery. Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center has been helping her achieve these results and hopes to see her achieve these goals. King Dye uses all her strength for hippotherapy at Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center.
