The EQUUS Foundation and the USEF Launch America’s Favorite Equestrian

WESTPORT, CT – December 17, 2010 – America’s Favorite Equestrian is an interactive fundraising effort presented jointly in partnership by The EQUUS Foundation and The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) to raise funds to advance the equestrian sport on an annual basis.

Using mobile texting, you can vote to select America’s Favorite Equestrians and support The EQUUS Foundation with a $5 gift. 100% of all donations will be used to support charitable causes. A minimum of $10,000 in “sport welfare” grants will be awarded, with an additional $5,000 grant awarded to the equestrian discipline generating the most votes.

The objective is for the America’s Favorite Equestrians to be an ongoing program with all equestrian disciplines/breeds represented and the winners recognized in a permanent “Hall of Fame”. The original intent was to launch the inaugural program in conjunction with the World Equestrian Games, which is why initially the eight disciplines of dressage, driving, endurance, eventing, jumping, para-dressage, reining, and vaulting were selected. The affiliates of the United States Equestrian Federation representing these disciplines selected the equestrians.  But, there were some logistics involved in establishing the mobile texting system and developing the website, which delayed the launch until December.

FEI Championships 2010 – World Jumping Challenge Final

Santiago Diaz Ortega from Colombia claimed gold at the 2010 FEI World Jumping Challenge Final in Guatemala last weekend.

COLOMBIA’S ORTEGA CLINCHES VICTORY IN GUATEMALA

Guatemala City (GUA), 17 December – Colombia’s Santiago Diaz Ortega claimed gold at the 2010 FEI World Jumping Challenge Final staged in Guatemala City, Guatemala last weekend.  Kenya’s Karen Mousley took silver while the host nation’s Wylder Rodriguez took bronze.

A total of 17 riders from 11 countries – Venezuela, Kenya, Colombia, Guatemala, Bermuda, Ecuador, Chile, Republic of South Africa, Algeria, Malaysia and Indonesia – were selected to compete in this event which is open to 20 Category “A” riders from 10 regional zones.

Competitors ride borrowed horses in this Challenge which was created in 2001, and there is a “change-horse” format in the Final Four competition which decides the medals on the last day.

BREYER Releases GG Valentine & Heartbreaker Model Horses

Buffalo, NY – December 16, 2010 – Legendary mare GG Valentine has done it again.  This time not in the show ring, as she was retired from showing in 2007, but as a mother after having another legendary baby. Due to her incredible success both as a championship hunter and a fantastic broodmare, BREYER has released a new model horse of GG Valentine with the colt Heartbreaker. GG Valentine and her rider Jennifer Alfano were one of the leading hunter combinations in the nation from 2001 to 2007. Holiday HorseFest Deemed a Great Success at the Meyer Amphitheatre

West Palm Beach, FL – December 13, 2010 – The Holiday HorseFest, presented by Fidelity Investments and staged by Equestrian Sport Productions, was held on Sunday, December 12, at The Meyer Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach, FL. The waterfront equestrian event was a great success, drawing over 4,000 spectators to see show jumping in a new venue, spreading the word about the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival and the 2011 FTI Great Charity Challenge presented by Fidelity Investments to a wider audience.

“We owe a big thank you to our sponsors and to the City of West Palm Beach for their support in making this event a reality and a huge success,” said Mark Bellissimo, CEO of Equestrian Sport Productions. “We hope this will be the first of many events in Palm Beach County that will broaden the reach of equestrian sport here.”

Jacksonville Winter Series 2011

December 14, 2010 – Time is flying by again…. If you are anything like me, I am running from one activity to another getting ready for the Christmas. This message is just to remind you that the Jacksonville Winter Series (Jan 12-30) is coming up soon. Please call for your stall reservations so we know how many stalls to erect.

This year the series will run three weeks with lots of exciting classes including the $100,000 FEI World Cup, $20,000 USHJA Hunter Derby and Gamblers Choice.

If you need a prize list they are online on both the Classic Company (www.classiccompany.com) website and the North Florida Hunter Jumper website (www.nfhja.com).

One more thing – the FEI has changed the prize money for the Welcome Class during week one.  This is due to the exchange rate of the dollar.  The $25,000 class will now be $31,250 and the entry fee will go up from $450 to $475. The payout will now be $9375, $6875, $4062.50, $2500, $1875, $1562.50, $1250, $937, $937, $625, $625, and $625.

In Memoriam: Lt. Col Ronnie MacMahon (IRL)

Ronnie MacMahon and San Carlos on their way to finishing second at Badminton Horse Trials in 1970. Lt Col MacMahon passed away last Saturday following a short illness.

Lt Col Ronnie MacMahon, Olympic event rider, international coach and advisor and former Officer Commanding at the Irish Army Equitation School, passed away on 11 December.

Born in Dublin in 1941, he became a commissioned officer in Ireland’s elite military establishment in 1962 at the age of 21, and competed in jumping throughout the early years of his army career.  However in 1969 he joined forces with a horse called San Carlos which would take him to the very top echelons in the sport of eventing. Within weeks of his new mount’s arrival at McKee Barracks, the new partnership finished third at the Punchestown International Three-day Event, and from there they went from strength to strength. In 1970 they finished second at the Badminton Horse Trials and the following year reigned supreme on their home turf at Punchestown. They competed at the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 and at the Montreal Olympic Games in 1976 and, riding Bothar Bui, Lt Col MacMahon was also fifth at Burghley in 1974.

He nurtured the career of the late Capt David Foster who was a linchpin of the Irish eventing squad for many years. Under his senior officer’s guidance, Capt Foster helped Ireland win team gold for the very first time at the European Eventing Championships at Luhmühlen in 1979 riding Inis Meain, and the same horse claimed individual bronze at the Europeans in Horsens, Denmark two years later with Capt Brian MacSweeney on board. Lt Col MacMahon was also instrumental in the development of the career of Comdt Gerry Flynn who has been successful both as an eventing and jumping rider.

Steve Guerdat Celebrates the Rolex IJRC Top 10 Final, Lake Geneva

Steve Guerdat celebrates winning the Rolex IJRC Top 10 Final with the Trophy in front of Lake Geneva, the morning after having won the competition in the Geneva Palexpo on Friday 10th December 2010.

Riding Jalisca Solier, Guerdat won the two-round event featuring the World’s Top 10 riders as based on the Rolex Rankings, ahead of 2nd place Denis Lynch (IRL) riding Lantinus and 3rd place Eric Lamaze (CAN) riding Hickstead.
