SAUGERTIES, NY (September 3, 2012) – Canadian Olympian and show jumping star and HITS Thermal regular John Pearce brought his talents to the East Coast once again as he pursues the coveted Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix. Pearce arrived for HITS-on-the-Hudson VII and easily gained his footing in the Strongid C 2X Grand Prix Stadium with a win in the $50,000 HITS Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, on Sunday aboard Allison Moore’s Chianto.

Sunday’s course was designed by Jerry Dougherty of Bokeelia, Florida and 27 horse-and-rider combinations attempted to challenge the track. At the end of the first round, the playing field was trimmed to five, and set up an exciting jump-off with a mix of some of the best athletes coast-to-coast.

“I thought today’s course was good – it had some different lines and the jump-off was quite a challenge. I pretty much had to throw all caution to the wind to leave out the strides and go fast enough to win,” said Pearce. “Chianto jumped great today and he is in perfect condition for the [Pfizer] Million.”

SAUGERTIES, NY (September 3, 2012) – Despite already being qualified for the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final, Therese Peck and her own MTM Off the Cuff sealed the deal after they rode to victory in Saturday’s $5,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix Wild Card at HITS Saugerties. Peck, who hails from Flower Mound, Texas, rides under the direction of Michael McCormick and is more than ready to make her second appearance at HITS Championship Weekend.

“Last year I rode a four-year-old in the final and I am really excited to ride him [MTM Off the Cuff]this year,” said Peck about the 10-year-old Warmblood gelding. “He is a real trooper and basically ready for anything.”

Peck’s win this weekend served as her 2012 Saugerties debut and first Devoucoux Hunter Prix victory of the year. She pocketed the win, however, on unfamiliar territory as it was her first time to see the new Outside Course at HITS-on-the-Hudson.

“The course was great,” she said. “We don’t get so see a lot of hills and banks and we had so much fun with it. I am really excited for next weekend.”

Huge Win at Hampton Classic for Emanuel Andrade and Tiny Tim

September 3, 2012 – Bridgehampton, New York – Only 15 years of age, Venezuela’s Emanuel Andrade scored an impressive win at the CSI4*-W Hampton Classic in Bridgehampton, New York, taking victory in the $15,000 North Star Junior/Amateur-Owner Classic on September 1 riding Tiny Tim.

Only three entries from the 39-horse starting field qualified for the jump-off over the 1.40m track set by internationally renowned course designer Guilherme Jorge of Brazil.  Two of those horses belonged to Andrade, who got the jump-off underway by posting a fast time of 36.83 seconds, but at the expense of two rails down with La Fe Forli.  Jean Sheptoff was next in, posting a clear round in 40.55 seconds to take over the lead riding Ami des Gemmes.  As the final challenger, Andrade knew exactly what he had to do to win.  Shaving more than three full seconds off the leading time, Andrade and Tiny Tim left all the rails in place, stopping the clock in 37.28 seconds to claim victory.

“He made a couple of mistakes in the jump-off with his first horse, which he analyzed for his ride with Tiny Tim,” explained trainer Angel Karolyi, a Venezuelan Show Jumping Team veteran.  “He knew what he needed to do in order to win the class.  He didn’t need to go too fast and risk making a mistake, but he knew that he had to do just enough to beat the time.”

Halpin and Springer Produce Top Ten Finishes at Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials

Sinead Halpin and Manoir De Carneville (Shannon Brinkman)

Stamford, England – The Land Rover U.S. Eventing Team showed that the future is bright claiming two spots within the top ten at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. Sunday proved to be an influential day of Show Jumping as the leaderboard saw a huge shake-up from top to bottom. Sinead Halpin and Allison Springer put a summer’s worth of training in England, thanks to Land Rover Competition and Training Grants, to the test producing classy efforts throughout the week to claim second and sixth places respectively.

Halpin (Oldwick, NJ) entered Burghley’s main arena as the overnight leader with Carriag LLC’s Manoir De Carneville but three unfortunate rails left them in runner-up position. The 12-year-old Selle Francais gelding collected twelve faults after lowering the oxer at three, the third element of the triple and the out of the double to finish on a score of 48.3.

“He warmed up beautifully and certainly was a bit tired but I feel like we were as prepared as we could have been going into that situation,” said Halpin following her round. “So it was disappointing but I’m still proud of him.”

Thoroughbred Sporthorse Legend Coconut Grove Has Died

Hudson Oaks, Texas — The Thoroughbred sporthorse legend Coconut Grove has died.  The exceptional, successful sire and veteran of major show jumping events was humanely euthanized on August 14, 2012, following a colic surgery at the Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery hospital in Weatherford, Texas.

Shown to incomparable successes by his owner, the Colombian show jumping rider German Camargo, Coconut Grove was one of showjumping’s most prominent Thoroughbred stars.  The South American-bred stallion’s show ring accomplishments began in 1993 and continued with great success at the Grand Prix level from 1996 through the remainder of his career.  In 1997, he was the Champion of the Bolivarianos Games in Peru.  Coconut Grove was Champion in the Toyota Cup World Cup Qualifier, Reserve Champion in the Centro American and Caribbean Games, and Reserve Champion in the World Cup qualifier in Caracas, Venezuela, all in 1998.  In 1999, he was ranked Best South American Horse and Team Fifth at the Pan American Games in Canada and participated in the Canadian World Cup qualifiers, securing a spot in the World Cup event in Gothenburg, Sweden.  He was National Champion Jumper for Colombia from 1997 through 1999.  The Camargos brought Coconut Grove to the United States for competition in 2000, when he won third in the $100,000 U.S. Open Jumper Championships in Miami and fifth in the $25,000 WEF Grand Prix of Tampa.  These placings and others earned the stallion a ticket to the Sydney Olympics representing Colombia, but a lack of funding kept the stallion at home.  Capping that outstanding year, Coconut Grove qualified for the AGA Championships, the American Invitational, and was ranked third in the AGA Rookie of the Year standings based on only six starts.  In 2001, he placed fifth in the $25,000 Wellington Grand Prix and was retired shortly after.

Ukraine Wins FEI Nations Cup European Promotional League 2012

Lausanne (SUI), 2 September 2012 – The Ukraine won the FEI Nations Cup European Promotional League 2012 title when finishing fourth at Gijon in Spain yesterday.  Out in front going into this last leg, the team of Cassio Rivetti, Fereno Szentirmai, Bjorn Nagel and Katharina Offel pinned their nearest rivals from Denmark into runner-up spot on the series table, while Italy finished the season in third ahead of Spain in fourth.

The Italian team enjoyed an encouraging day when, leading yesterday’s competition at the halfway stage, they dropped just one place to slot in behind the winners from France.  But their 17-fault second-round result was indicative of the toughness of the high-scoring class which produced plenty of surprises.  There were no double-clears throughout the entire competition, and only six single clear rounds from the starting field of 52 horse-and-rider combinations.

Anniversary Fixture

A total of 13 countries – Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Ukraine and the USA – lined out for the FEI Nations Cup at this 70th anniversary fixture in the coastal town located on the far north of the Iberian Peninsula, and it was a hard-fought affair.  The leading FEI European Promotional League contenders from Ukraine, Denmark, Italy and Spain had to take on the might of many of the top-league nations, and the Danes were in with a chance of taking the title if they could clinch the maximum 10 points.

Laura Chapot on Her Way to Another Streak at HITS Saugerties

©ESI Photography. Laura Chapot and Umberto cruise to a victory in today’s $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix.

SAUGERTIES, NY (August 31, 2012) – After winning four in a row during Weeks V and VI at HITS Saugerties this summer, Laura Chapot is off to another great start as she and Mary Chapot’s Umberto rode to a win in today’s $25,000 SmartPak Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health. They topped a field of 30 horses who rode over Jerry Dougherty’s track and pocketed the last $25,000 grand prix before HITS Championship Weekend arrives September 7-9.

Dougherty of Bokeelia, Florida set a 13-obstacle course, which included 16 jumping efforts. He tripped up most riders with a one-stride to a two-stride triple combination at fence eight and a tight one-stride double at fence eleven. The two combinations alone ruined all hope for clear rounds for nine riders, while eleven persevered to the jump-off.

“You never know what you are going to get on Friday because the field is so mixed – there are a lot of young horses here and there are a lot of horses who are in it to prepare for Sunday’s grand prix,” said Chapot of Neshanic Station, New Jersey. “But, all-in-all, I think the course was really nice and I was very pleased with how my horses jumped it.”
