WHINNY Awards to Honor Animal Rights Advocate Madeleine Pickens

The Women’s Horse Industry Network has announced that Madeleine Pickens has been selected to receive a WHINNY award. The awards dinner will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at the Radisson Hotel Opryland. It will be videotaped as part of a one hour special on HRTV.

“We are very happy to present this award to Madeleine. This woman not only works hard to help animals and horses but has put her money where her boots are and where her passion lives. People like Madeleine deserve to be recognized and applauded for their efforts.  We will do everything we can to help promote her and her efforts.  It definitely will be my pleasure to hand her this award,” states WHIN’s Executive Director, Catherine Masters.

Animal rights advocate Madeleine Pickens started her career in horse racing in 1983, a passion she shared with her late husband and Gulfstream Aerospace founder, Allen E. Paulson. They achieved enormous success in racing and had a total of 800 horses, including breeding and racing World Champion and U.S. Hall of Fame inductee, Cigar. They achieved much esteem for their successes racing many champion Thoroughbreds, breeding many brood mares, and creating three successful farms from the ground up. Together, they owned a breaking and training farm at Ocala and a breeding farm at Brookside North in Kentucky where many of their champions were raised. They also had one more facility in California. Madeleine managed all the business aspects, farm decisions, and race decisions for the entire operation. The Paulsons owned more than 115 winners of graded stakes races. To this day, they still hold the record for the leader of the most ‘Breeder’s Cup’ champion horses and earnings.

Today, she is still breeding a few racehorses, but adamantly opposes horse slaughter and the use of the drugs in these animals. Until that is cleared up, she won’t ever participate in the race world like she had once been.

Madalyn Ward, DVM Partners with Tallgrass Animal Acupressure Institute to Offer a Ground Breaking Online Course

Denver, CO – Madalyn Ward, DVM, a pioneer and author in holistic veterinary horse care, has partnered with Tallgrass Animal Acupressure Institute to create a new, unique online course: Understanding Horse Types & Temperaments. This course is an invaluable resource for every horse guardian, trainer, and stable manager. Since each horse is an individual, knowing the type provides practical management tools leading to their optimal performance.

Understanding Horse Types & Temperaments is based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine Five Element Theory and teaches people how to recognize equine “personalities” within this context. For instance, an affectionate horse who loves attention is demonstrating a Fire Element nature. Another example is a horse with a Water constitution will tend to have a dense body, shiny coat, enjoys working, but needs to feel safe and secure. By identifying the horse’s traits within the Five Elements people will be able to find the best way to work with each horse including: discipline/sport, training style, diet, exercise level, plus identify health issues that may arise.

Dr. Madalyn Ward is one of the first and foremost veterinarians in the United States to research and implement more natural and holistic approaches to horse management. She is the author of the renowned book HorseHarmony: Understanding Horse Types and Temperaments. Horse people completing the Tallgrass online course will have achieved the Level 1 Typing Certification with Dr. Ward’s Horse Harmony Program. Tallgrass Animal Acupressure Institute participants will receive 20-elective credit hours upon completion of Understanding Horse Types & Temperaments.

Nancy Zidonis, Co-founder of Tallgrass, comments: “This is a ground-breaking course – it brings Dr. Ward’s extensive natural horse management work to a broader audience of people who really want to take the best care of their horses. There’s no other course like it. Riders and equine professionals need to understand how to work with their horses for mutual enjoyment and top performance.”

Tallgrass Animal Acupressure Institute offers on-line and hands-on training including a Practitioner Certification Program in equine and small animal acupressure worldwide. Tallgrass is also the developer of several iApps for the equine and canine industries. Well Known Country Music Icon, Lacy J. Dalton, Wins Whinny Award

Nashville, TN – July 13, 2011 – Well known country music icon, Lacy J. Dalton, has been awarded a “Whinny” award for her efforts to save and preserve lands for wild horses. The award will be presented by the Women’s Horse Industry at their annual meeting October 6-8 at the Radisson Hotel Opryland in Nashville, Tennessee.

Dalton, whose credentials in music are substantial, has put her energy, money and name behind the Let ’em Run Foundation.

The Let ’em Run Foundation is working with other organizations to begin to set aside huge tracts of land for these horses, to help manage the herds and to fence off areas where they should not roam. The group’s dream is to create the “Comstock Wild Horse Sanctuary” where these horses can be preserved, protected and allowed to run free for our children and our children’s children.

“We are very pleased to award Lacy a Whinny for her efforts. More and more people are starting to understand the need to preserve areas for our wild horses and organizations like this and people like Lacy are making this happen. She is to be applauded for her efforts by everyone who cares about wild horses,” states WHIA Executive Director, Catherine Masters.

Lacy is presently recording 2 new CDs. The first, called “Songs of the New West”, is a collection of Outlaw Country songs which include many as yet unrecorded songs by Lacy and friends, along with classics like “Wild Horses” by the Rolling Stones and “Friend of the Devil” by the Grateful Dead. In addition, fueled by feelings generated by what Lacy describes as a “Thermonuclear Divorce” from longtime husband and partner Aaron Anderson, she is working on a CD called “What Don’t Kill You Makes You Strong” after its title track.

The awards will be given out on October 6 in Nashville, Tennessee at the Rhythm and Hooves benefit to save horses. The event will raise funds for three equine charities: The Cloud Foundation, The Equestrian Aid Foundation and NetPosse.com. The benefit will be a part of the WHIA’s Annual conference (October 6-8 at the Radisson Hotel Opryland) where women from around the world will gather to exchange information and business.
