Wellington, FL – June 25, 2015 – The United States Equestrian Team Foundation is pleased to announce that it will be hosting an Olympic Games benefit event on Friday, January 22, 2016 in Wellington, FL. “Rockin Rio,” with honorary chairs Patti Scialfa and Bruce Springsteen, will help raise funds for the USET Foundation to further support the United States Equestrian Team horses and riders as they prepare to compete at the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Scialfa, a USET Foundation Trustee, and husband Bruce Springsteen are the parents of Jessica Springsteen, a young rider who has successfully competed at the highest levels of show jumping and has represented the United States on nations cup teams internationally. The family believes strongly in supporting the athletes and the United States’ goal to bring home medals.

“Helping this country’s equestrian athletes and supporting the United States Equestrian Teams has been a family affair for us. USET Foundation Celebrates Joan and Corwith Hamill Rotunda Dedication

Brownlee O. Currey, Jr., Nancy Winter, Jonathan Hamill, Elizabeth (Betsy) Bramsen and Philip Richter.

Gladstone, NJ – June 1, 2015 – On Saturday, May 30, the dedication of the Joan and Corwith Hamill Rotunda at the United States Equestrian Team Foundation’s Hamilton Farm stables honored the family’s commitment to equestrian sport, in recognition of their remarkable $1.5 million gift to the organization.

The Illinois couple’s devotion to the cause began six decades ago, when they helped lay the groundwork for a fledgling group to fill the post-World War II gap after the U.S. Army stopped supporting U.S. equestrian teams that competed internationally.

Foundation Chairman Brownlee Currey noted that it was a special day not only for the Foundation and members of the Hamill family, but also for the “horses and riders as they train to prepare to represent the country in international competition.” In addition, he cited the benefits of the contribution for other groups that use the facility, including the Somerset Hills Pony Club. Many of the riders who have gone on to be part of U.S. teams at major competitions around the world have gotten their start in Pony Club.

Foundation trustee and treasurer Philip Richter called the gift “transformational.” He noted that many of the people on hand for the ceremony “have a special tie to this sacred place. This facility means so much to our sport.” In 2017, the foundation’s landmark stable headquarters will mark its 100th anniversary. “While the structure has remained remarkably solid, there are capital expenditures that are necessary to update and maintain this facility to the standards it deserves. This gift gets us a long way to achieving that goal,” said Richter. His grandfather, Philip Hofmann, served as a trustee of the U.S. Equestrian Team with the late Joan Hamill, whose husband, known as Corky, was a member of the finance committee.

The improvement projects the gift will help finance include rebuilding the stalls, as well as modernizing the heating and air conditioning system, starting with replacing the 100-year-old boiler.

Joan Hamill competed for the Wofford Cup with her daughter, Nancy, in the 1957 National Eventing Championships at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. That experience stimulated Joan’s interest in getting involved with the USET, which she served as a trustee from 1976 to 1984, after which she became an honorary trustee.

Another link between the past and the present was the presence of Olympic and world championships multi-medalist Jimmy Wofford, who spoke about the early years of the USET and the impact Joan Hamill had, and thanked Nancy Hamill Winter; her sister, Betsy Bramsen, and their brother, Jon Hamill, for their continuing support and involvement with the USET Foundation.

The Hamill family was squarely behind the 1959 Pan American Games when they were held in Chicago, doing everything from setting up the dressage ring to arranging social events and selling USET souvenirs. Michael Page, the individual gold medalist from those Games, also was on hand at Gladstone to renew his acquaintance with the Hamills.

Nancy Winter trained at Gladstone when she was long-listed for the 1986 World Championships, and the place means a great deal to her personally, as well as because of her parents’ efforts on the USET’s behalf. She noted her mother, who had “always been a team player” vowed to do “whatever she could for the team.”

Her parents “would be so proud to be here and see this wonderful farm and to know how well the organization has survived,” she said, before a plaque commemorating their contribution was unveiled.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the stable, the USET Foundation established “The Gladstone Fund” to preserve the legacy and the historic facility. The Hamilton Farm Stable is central to supporting the Foundation’s mission through providing a world-class facility for Olympic, Pan American and World Championship selection trials, national Championships, training sessions and special equestrian events and exhibitions.

“I cannot express enough how grateful we are to Jon, Nancy and Betsy for their generous gift from the Hamill Family Foundation in honor of their parents Joan and Corwith. They were true leaders of the USET, and it is so fitting that their legacy will be a permanent part of this iconic facility, which continues to train and prepare our riders and horses for international competition. We are proud to name the rotunda the “Joan and Corwith Hamill Rotunda,” said Bonnie B. Jenkins, Executive Director.

Announcing 2016 Karen Stives European Developing Tour for Eventing

Gladstone, NJ – June 1, 2015 – The United States Equestrian Team (USET) Foundation and the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) are pleased to announce the establishment of the 2016 Karen Stives European Developing Tour for Eventing.

In 2014, Karen Stives made generous gift of $1 million to the USET Foundation to establish the Karen Stives Endowment Fund for High Performance Eventing. This fund allows for grants to be awarded annually for an Eventing High Performance activity, which will have a direct impact on the United States’ ability to win medals at International Championship CCI competitions. For 2016, the Karen Stives European Developing Tour is that program activity that will provide the international experience necessary for talented developing athletes to step up and be ready to represent this country in international championships, strengthening the pipeline of qualified riders capable of winning medals for the future.

In 2016, selected members of the USEF’s Developing Rider Program (Eventing 18 and Eventing 25) will be able to use the Karen Stives European Developing Tour to gain international experience and achieve results at European events, in an effort to develop future team riders in a team environment. The U.S. Under 25 athlete/horse combinations selected will compete at the Rockingham CIC and Bramham International CCI3*-U25 in Great Britain in 2016.

In addition to competing at Rockingham CIC and Brahman CCI3*, riders will have the opportunity to explore other areas that will help further their education and experience as an athlete while in Great Britain. Applicants will be asked to explain how they think they will benefit from the tour and what other learning experiences (apart from the competitions) they would like included during the tour and how they feel they would benefit from them.

Stives was a championship Eventing rider who was named the USCTA Rider of Year in 1981, 1987 and 1988. In 1982, she represented the United States at the Luhmuhlen World Championships, and in 1984 she anchored the U.S. Eventing Team that won the Team Gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics, while also winning Individual Silver. Stives also earned the Leading Lady Rider title in 1981, the Mercedes-Benz Horsewoman of the Year in 1984, and the prestigious Wofford Cup. Following her retirement from international competition, Stives became an FEI judge and was the Chairman of the USET Three-Day Event Selectors’ Committee for many years.

“Through the generosity and true understanding of Karen in terms of knowing what it takes to win on the world stage, many more developing eventing riders will have the opportunity to compete in Europe among the world’s best, honing their skills and gaining valuable experience in the hopes that they too will have the chance to win Olympic Gold,” said Bonnie B. Jenkins, USET Foundation Executive Director.

USET Foundation Presents 2015 Maxine Beard Award to Michael Hughes

Michael Hughes and Luxina. By: Shannon Bower/PMG.

Wellington, FL – March 28, 2015 – The United States Equestrian Team Foundation is pleased to announce that 18-year-old Michael Hughes of Allendale, NJ has been selected as the 2015 recipient of the Maxine Beard Show Jumping Rider Award. Hughes was presented with the Maxine Beard Award trophy at the Winter Equestrian Festival Finale on March 28, 2015 at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, FL.

The selection was based on Hughes’s competitive record and potential to represent the United States in international competition. Winning his first grand prix at just 16 years old, Hughes went on to win the 2013 USEF Show Jumping Talent Search Finals – East, as well as the 2014 Washington International Horse Show Equitation Championship. He claimed the 2014 Individual Young Rider Silver medal at the North American Junior and Young Riders Championship, and was most recently a member of the winning Young Riders team for the second year in a row at the CSIO Wellington Nations Cup.

“It means so much to win this,” said Hughes. “Looking at all of the past winners and where they are today is amazing, so it’s an honor to just be acknowledged for this award. I am really lucky to have the year I had and to have the horses that I am riding.”

The award provides Hughes the opportunity to be credentialed and travel with the U.S. delegation to the 2015 FEI World Cup Finals in Las Vegas, Nevada from April 15-19. He will observe the operations of an international championship, including the stabling area, veterinary inspections and schooling, and will walk the courses with the U.S. Show Jumping Chef d’Equipe, Robert Ridland.

U.S. Show Jumping Young Rider Chef d’Equipe DiAnn Langer has worked closely with Hughes over the last two years, and is thrilled to see his talent recognized with this award. “Michael Hughes is the real deal,” stated Langer. “He is incredibly effective on many types of horses, he is personable, he is serious about his work, and he’s successful in the equitation and the jumpers. I feel that he has a huge international future in front of him.”

Hughes noted, “I think it’s a going to be a lot of fun and be a great experience to be with Robert and DiAnn during World Cup Finals and get to watching an amazing competition.”

Hughes trains with his father Eamonn Hughes at their family’s Drumnacross Farm, as well as Missy Clark and John Brennan of North Run. This summer, he hopes to compete in Europe and also travel to Spruce Meadows. His goal is to one day represent the United States on a Senior Team internationally. With the talent, drive and determination to be a top-notch competitor, Hughes has proven that he will be a part of the future for show jumping in the United States.

USET Foundation Announces Launch of “The Dressage Challenge”

Fritz and Claudine Kundrun with U.S. Dressage Chef d’Equipe Robert Dover. Photo by Alexandra Lynch.

Wellington, FL – March 26, 2015 – Top U.S. dressage riders and owners gathered with United States Equestrian Team (USET) Foundation trustees Wednesday evening at the Global Dressage Festival pavilion for a champagne toast to celebrate the establishment of “The Dressage Challenge” and to recognize Claudine and Fritz Kundrun for their generosity.

The Dressage Challenge is an exciting new fundraising effort launched by the USET Foundation specifically for U.S. High Performance Dressage Programs. The Kundruns, longtime horse owners and supporters of U.S. dressage, have made a significant contribution to initiate The Challenge: they will match $1 for every $2 in gift commitments made by Dec. 31, 2015, up to a total of $500,000.

The goal of The Dressage Challenge is to raise $1,500,000 over the next four years to support a world-class program that will put the U.S. on top of the podium at international championships. Gifts are all tax-deductible. Commitments of $25,000 or more made by Dec. 31 are eligible for The Challenge and may be paid over a multi-year period.

USET Foundation Executive Director Bonnie Jenkins announced that donors have already stepped up to join The Dressage Challenge. Patsy and Leet Denton and Rowan O’Riley have made gift commitments to support the new program.

“This is a very exciting opportunity that has the potential to take the United States High Performance Dressage Program to the next level,” Jenkins said. “We are so grateful to the Kundruns for their vision and most generous commitment in helping achieve this goal.”

The champagne toast was held at the conclusion of the first day of the Stillpoint Farm Nations Cup CDIO3*, and there was plenty to celebrate, as both U.S. teams performed well to sit first and third in the team competition going into the final day.

“I think proof of our interest in being financially supportive was this afternoon: when you see someone like Laura [Graves] come into the arena with her horse, it’s all worth it,” Fritz Kundrun said. “We wanted to give a chance to gifted people with a passion and help the United States get a little more recognition for the sport.”

To learn more about getting involved in The Dressage Challenge, please contact Bonnie Jenkins at bjenkins@uset.org or (908) 234-1251.

Brian Lookabill Lights Up American Equestrians Got Talent Finale

Brian Lookabill with Josh Young. Photo by Mary Adelaide Brakenridge.

Wellington, FL – March 17, 2015 – The international arena at the Global Dressage Festival facility in Wellington, Florida, usually host to top-class dressage horses and riders, showcased a different kind of talent on Sunday night. A spectacular stage replaced judges’ boxes and dressage letters, and 13 finalists selected through a series of auditions showed off their diverse talents at the American Equestrians Got Talent (AEGT) Finale. After two very competitive rounds, singer Brian Lookabill came away with the AEGT victory.

The finalists, all of whom are part of the equestrian community, put on acts ranging from dancing and singing to fire baton twirling and stand-up comedy for an appreciative audience watching from the VIP tent and bleachers as well as from all over the country via the Chronicle of the Horse live stream.

Both attendees of the event and those watching on the live stream could make an impact on the outcome by voting on their smartphones, making donations to the United States Equestrian Team (USET) Foundation for each vote. Funds raised at the event, along with the $35,000 raised by The Grille Fashion Cuisine at the nine auditions leading up to the Finale, support USEF High Performance Programs through the USET Foundation.

The event is dedicated to supporting dressage but has a wider influence as well: 10 percent of funds is split between all of the other FEI disciplines, and 10 percent goes to show jumping since the winner, Lookabill, was competing on behalf of that sport.

After the first round, featuring performances from all of the contestants, the top four returned for a final round to determine the winner. Six judges – Mark Bellissimo, Carmine Gialanella, Tami Hoag, P. J. Rizvi, Leslie Streeter and Chrystine Tauber – were on hand to critique the performances, and their selections counted for 50 percent of the result in both rounds. The other 50 percent was determined by audience voting.

Lookabill, Taylor Hughes, Teaghan James and Ki-Juan Minors were the front-runners after the first round and squared off against each other in the second round. All four qualified for the Finale as solo singers, and while they made various use of back-up singers, dancers or instrumentalists, the focus was on their vocal skill and power.

Several of them opted to show off their range by choosing two very different songs as their first and second numbers. Lookabill started things off with an upbeat rendition of Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” and then brought guitarist Josh Young into the mix for a stripped-down performance of Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.”

“I thought that it would be smart to show some different facets of my ability,” Lookabill said. “The first song was to get the audience up and into it and have fun, and then I wanted to do a song that is timeless yet still very popular. I could put a twist on it as a man doing it because it’s a woman’s song with a lot of range.

“I’d like to salute Robert Dover, Sara Ike of the USET Foundation, and Annie Cizadlo, who did a fantastic job of getting everything organized,” he added. “Thank you to everyone for their support, including my son Cole, who called to cheer me on several times during the night. And a special thanks to Rock Star Dry Cleaners in Wellington for going out of their way to help me on the day of the show.”

Lookabill took home the $5,000 top prize sponsored by Robert Ross, P.A., Luxury Equestrian Realtor for Keller Williams, clinching the win over Minors in a tight race. Minors earned the $2,500 second prize courtesy of Visse Wedell, and On Course Consignment sponsored the $1,000 third prize, which James won. The fourth place prize of $500, sponsored by Oded Shimoni Dressage, went to Hughes.

A live auction was held between the performances and featured several incredible items: luxury trips offering up-close experiences at the 2015 Central Park Horse Show in New York City, Pan American Games in Toronto and FEI World Breeding Dressage Championships for Young Horses in Verden, Germany; a four-day cruise to the Bahamas on a 115′ yacht; a head-to-toe outfit for horse and rider including an exclusive Hèrmes coat and Custom Saddlery saddle; and a day with each of the Team USA dressage coaches.

“I am completely thrilled with the event last night,” said Robert Dover, Chef d’Equipe of the U.S. dressage team and organizer of AEGT. “I am so appreciative to everyone: all of the sponsors, the volunteers, the people who came out to support the event and those who watched it live at Chronicle of the Horse online. I’m really excited about the large amount of money raised for the USET Foundation and our athletes and programs.”

George H. Morris “Gladstone Program” Intensive Training for Show Jumping Riders Returns in 2015

Gladstone, NJ – March 12, 2015 – The USET Foundation is pleased to announce that the George H. Morris “Gladstone Program” for this country’s talented show jumping riders will feature two returning programs in 2015. The first will be held May 18-24, 2015 at the United States Equestrian Team Foundation’s headquarters “Hamilton Farm” in Gladstone, New Jersey, and the second program will run June 15-20, 2015, organized by Diane Carney and held at Annali-Brookwood Farm in Antioch, IL.

The “Gladstone Program” is an intensive week of training and education for exceptionally dedicated and talented show jumping riders who are serious about their interest and desire to pursue a path that will prepare them for international competition.

The program is open to riders 18+ years of age, who are currently competing successfully at 1.45 meters or above. A maximum of 10 riders for each clinic will be personally selected by Morris.

The purpose of the program is to continue to educate, support and guide riders on the overall knowledge and expertise required to succeed at the top level of show jumping internationally. In addition to daily training sessions with Morris, the riders will participate in hands-on sessions with top industry professionals.

This year, one of the clinicians during the Gladstone Program at Hamilton Farms will be Dr. Gerhard Heuschmann, renowned expert in the field of biomechanics of the horse, and how it relates to the training and overall wellbeing of the horse.

The Gladstone Program, held at Annali-Brookwood Farm in Antioch, IL, will incorporate natural obstacles on a large grand prix field, designed to prepare riders for outdoor venues like Spruce Meadows. Dr. Marvin Beeman DVM from Littleton Equine Medical Center in Colorado will be the presenting veterinarian.

Each rider will meet one-on-one with Morris during the week to discuss their current and future plans and Morris will help guide them in putting together a program that will continue their preparation for international competition. Morris will also remain available after the program to follow up and monitor each rider’s progress.

“George’s continued involvement in the High Performance program is critical to providing the path, and establishing a pool of riders that are prepared and ready in every respect to represent the U.S. on Nations Cup teams. Gladstone is the perfect setting to host this important program as it is the place where the ‘team’ lived, trained and competed under the watchful eye of legendary coach Bert DeNemethy, producing some of our most successful and iconic show jumping riders, Bill Steinkraus, Frank Chapot and George, to name a few. I am most grateful to George for helping me increase the depth of talent available for Nations Cup competitions, and instilling the Gladstone ethic in these riders, which is what this program is all about,” remarked Robert Ridland, USEF Show Jumping Chef d’Equipe.

USET Foundation Executive Director Bonnie B. Jenkins said, “This program has been realized through the generosity of USET Foundation supporters Suzanne and B. G. Porter and Diane Carney who recognize the enormous potential of the U.S. Show Jumping program and the opportunity we have with George to mentor and guide the next generation of team riders as they progress up the ranks.”

Riders interested in participating should complete an application and submit to the USEF, P.O. Box 83, Gladstone, NJ 07934, or fax: 908-234-9417, no later than April 17th. Selected riders will be notified on or about April 24th. A Lucky Winner Will “Dress for Success” at America’s Equestrians Got Talent Finale

At the “America’s Equestrians Got Talent” Finale at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival, The Horse of Course will auction off this “Dress for Success” outfit, worth approximately $4,000 (Photo courtesy of JRPR)

Wellington, FL (March 12, 2015) – “I live my life for dressage,” said Beth Haist, the CEO of The Horse of Course. “I can’t imagine a better cause than to get our riders to the Olympics, to the Pan American games, and to everywhere else where they can compete for the U.S.” The Horse of Course’s next endeavor to help its beloved dressage riders succeed is to provide a generous donation — worth approximately $4,000 — to “America’s Equestrians Got Talent,” a competition presented by the United States Equestrian Team Foundation (USET Foundation). The unique, exciting competition serves as a fundraiser to send riders to the world’s prestigious show rings. The finale of America’s Equestrians Got Talent will take place at the Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida at the VIP tent and in the international arena, on March 15. This marks the event’s third year.

The Horse of Course’s donation to America’s Equestrians Got Talent takes the form of a “Dress for Success” package that will be available for auction. The package includes a helmet, a shadbelly, a show shirt, britches, an Otto Schumacker belt, boots, and a stock tie. “It’s the perfect outfit from head to toe,” said Haist. This fabulous prize package will help the USET Foundation support dressage riders, as well as provide one lucky rider with an incredible show outfit. “The money raised will benefit the High Performance riders and teams for the upcoming International events, the World Cup, and the Pan American Games,” explains Anne Cizadlo from the USET Foundation. “If the winner of the Talent show is from a discipline other than dressage, then 10% of the money raised will go to that performers sport. Additionally, a percentage of the proceeds from this event will be distributed among the eight International disciplines sponsored by USET.”

The “America’s Equestrians Got Talent” competition is a fun, interactive event that allows the audience to get in on the action by voting for their favorite talented performer. “Everyone on site will be able to vote from their phones for a $5 donation to help pick the winner of the night,” said Cizadlo. “General admission tickets are available in the bleachers and for standing room so that everyone can attend and watch the show from the sidelines. It will also be live streamed so that folks can watch at home.” The Wellington community may be accustomed to seeing these top riders competing on horseback in the winter show series, but this is a unique opportunity to see them competing with a song and a microphone, instead! Everyone is encouraged to get a ticket to watch these equestrian superstars become stars of the stage, as well.

The Horse of Course is a full-service tack shop located in the historic downtown of Claremore, Oklahoma. The shop carries tack and show clothing for the English rider, creating a one-stop location for tack and apparel for both dressage and hunter/jumper equestrians. The Horse of Course also has an online shop so that even more riders can benefit from the quality items and attentive customer service that the store has to offer. Currently, the store’s mobile tack shop is at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival to show its continued support of dressage and provide equestrians with everything they could need before entering the show ring.
