New European-Style Developing Sport Horse Division to Premier at the 2013 Southeast Medal Finals

Jacksonville, FL – August 7, 2013 – The Southeast Medal Finals management is pleased to announce the addition of a new and exciting young jumper division – the Developing Sport Horse. The competition is based on European-style classes where the horses are judged on their athletic potential to be top contenders in the future of the sport.

At the popular Jacksonville show, to be held on September 19-22, the Developing Sport Horse Division was added to showcase young jumper talent. Developing Sport Horses will be judged on style, presentation, rideability, and their potential to eventually compete at the grand prix level and represent the U.S. in international competition.

“I saw these young jumper classes in Europe and I thought they made a lot of sense,” said James Lala, who partners with Bob Bell and Classic Company to produce the Southeast Medal Finals. “It is an opportunity to compete a young jumper while nurturing their development.”

Here’s how the division will work:

All competitors begin each class with 60 points. The judge and course designer will designate the course’s optimal time.  The time allowance will be set at eight seconds below and eight seconds above the optimal time.

The judge will award points:

1-10 points for Style – Jumping technique
1-10 points for Presentation – Fitness, condition and expression
1-10 points for Rideability – Smoothness, leads and appropriate striding
1-10 points for Potential – Talent to one day compete at grand prix level or to represent the U.S. in International competition

The judge will subtract points for the following faults:

-5 points per knock down
-20 points for first refusal
-2 points for each second above and below the time allowance

Developing Sport Horse courses may offer options which provide competitors the opportunity to showcase their horses’ strengths.

The Developing Sport Horse format will encourage good horsemanship for young jumpers. The horses in the division should demonstrate talent, potential, be in good health and be both physically and mentally ready for the competition.

The entries with the highest points will be named champion and reserve champion of each section. The Developing Sport Horse with the most points in all four sections will awarded Best Developing Sport Horse.

SECTIONS:

4 yr old, Fence height 1.0
5 yr old, Fence height 1.10
6 yr old, Fence height 1.20
Horses in their First or Second Year of Showing, Fence height 1.10

To compete in the Developing Sport Horse Division, competitors must show proof of age, bloodlines, country of origin and breeder, and a brief bio.

Judges Named for 2013 Southeast Medal Finals

Jacksonville, FL – August 1, 2013 – Southeast Medal Finals management is pleased to announce the judging panel for this year’s show, to be held September 19-22, 2013 at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center. The 2013 judges will include Linda Andrisani, Molly Flaherty, Tony Sgarlata and Jennifer Drahan.

Andrisani has previously judged seven of the eight ASPCA Maclay Regional Finals, missing only Region 3 – the Southeast Region. So this year’s she thrilled to be able judge the Maclay Regional Finals at the Southeast Medal Finals.

“I have always really enjoyed being part of the Maclay Regionals. I have done all of the regionals in my judging career, but this one. This is the only one that was missing, so I’m really looking forward to it,” shared Andrisani. “It’s also a very new show and event being put on there, so it’s exciting to be a part of something new and up and coming.”

Andrisani brings to the Southeast Medal Finals over 25 years of hunter seat equitation judging experience, having made her mark as one of the most well-respected judges in the country judging at such show as the Hampton Classic and countless others. In addition to her time on the judge’s stand, Andrisani ran her own successful horse-show operation until 2006, during which time her students and horses racked up numerous accolades across the country. Andrisani also produced the popular DVD The Judge’s Eye.

Flaherty also adds years of judging, riding and coaching experience to this year’s judges line-up. Since 1987, Flaherty has co-owned and trained out of Arcadia Farm in Westchester County, NY, training riders to top awards up and down the east coast, earning accolades at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show and the Alltech National Horse Show.

“Being involved with medal finals such as this one you get to see some of the area’s best equitation riders,” said Flaherty. “I’m really looking forward to judging this group and being a part of such an exciting new event.”

A fellow New York based trainer and judge, Sgarlata joins this year’s impressive South East Medal Finals judging panel. Sgarlata has been showing and training hunters and jumpers for over 25 years, and he currently operates Tony Sgarlata Sales. As a USEF ‘R’ registered judge, Sgarlata has judged across the country in all aspects of the hunter and equitation rings including the International Hunter Futurity, numerous World Champion Hunter Rider events and several USHJA hunter derbies. Sgarlata also writes a monthly column titled Ask the Judge for Horse Bits Magazine.

“I was there last year for the first Southeast Medal Finals, and you get to see some of the best riders in the country,” Sgarlata said. “I was certainly impressed with the quality of the riders and trainers that are there, so I am really looking forward to judging this year.”

The judges will preside over the numerous feature classes held at the 2013 Southeast Medal Finals, including the Phelps Media Group Southeast Junior Medal Final, ASPCA Maclay Regional Finals, the $7,500 Children’s/Adult Southeast Championship, which is open to all riders, the Southeast Adult Medal Finals and more.

Joining the panel specifically for the Southeast Junior Medal Final and the Southeast Adult Medal Final is judge Jennifer Drahan. Drahan hails from Wellington, FL with an extensive background in the hunter/jumper industry. Modeled after the New England Medal Finals, the four judges on the panel will score the classes using open numerical scoring, allowing for particularly fair and subjective scoring of these headlining hunter seat equitation classes.

“When James (Lala) and I were at Ox Ridge, the New England Medal Finals was one of our favorite shows,” said Drahan. “This show has brought so much to the Southeast as a venue for up-and-coming equitation riders. As a judge, it is always exciting to see new talent. I strongly believe in equitation as the basis for all good riding. That is something that we offer in our country that is not offered in other countries.”

In the jumper ring, highlights include the $5,000 Welcome Stake on Thursday and the $25,000 Land Rover of Jacksonville Grand Prix, held Friday night to allow trainers and riders to focus on the equitation classes on Saturday and Sunday.

The Southeast Medal Finals is held at one of the premier equestrian facilities on the east coast, the Jacksonville Equestrian Center, which is centrally located. The complex includes a network of adjacent trails, available to explore and enjoy for a casual hack during horse show down times. With some of the top junior riders in the country competing, Southeast Medal Finals is the perfect preparation for the fall indoor circuit. Southeast Medal Finals Aids Unbridled Warriors Inc.

Unbridled Warriors Inc.’s mission is to provide equine assisted personal growth, equine experiential growth and services to military personnel and veterans.

Jacksonville, FL – July 9, 2013 – The Southeast Medal Finals brings some of the country’s top competitors and trainers to Jacksonville, FL, and this year the show is also bringing support of a new nonprofit, Unbridled Warriors Inc. All proceeds from live and silent auctions held during the show, September 19-22, 2013, will be donated to support the worthy organization.

Based in Green Cove Springs, FL, Unbridled Warriors Inc. provides equine assisted programs and equine interactive learning to military personnel, veterans, first responders and the families of these service men and women.

“Unbridled Warriors is a nonprofit created because we were seeing more and more military and first responders as participants in equine assisted programs, and most of them are limited in their ability to access that type of programming,” Unbridled Warriors founder StarrLee Heady shared. “This programming provides equine interactive learning or equine assisted programs that can help them deal with post-traumatic stress disorder, combat stress, relationship problems, intimacy issues – just about anything that comes up.”

Heady has worked with military personnel in similar programming pro-bono since July 2011, but as the need for the equine assisted services continued to grow, Unbridled Warriors came to fruition and received its 501(c)3 nonprofit status in January 2013. Now, Heady is thrilled with the opportunity that the Southeast Medal Finals has presented the growing organization.

“It just means so much,” she said. “It’s good exposure to the rest of the horse world. There are so many people in the horse industry who understand how much of a difference it’s made in their own lives to work with horses, but they aren’t aware that horses are being utilized to do this sort of service in our community. It’s just tremendous that another horse industry group would support us in this way.”

Southeast Medal Finals features the ASPCA Maclay Regionals, the Phelps Media Group Southeast Junior 3′ Medal Finals, the $25,000 Land Rover of Jacksonville Grand Prix, the $10,000 Children’s/Adult Southeast Championship and more. The four-day show is held at one of the premier equestrian facilities on the east coast, the Jacksonville Equestrian Center, centrally located for USHJA Zone 4 and Region 3 competitors. The complex includes a network of adjacent trails, available to explore and enjoy for a casual hack during horse show down times. With excellent footing and some of the top junior riders in the country, Southeast Medal Finals is the perfect preparation for the fall indoor circuit. Phelps Media Group International Donates Perpetual Trophy for Southeast Medal Finals

Jacksonville, FL – October 1, 2012 – From the moment show organizer James Lala contacted Mason Phelps about his idea for the new Southeast Medal Finals, Phelps was on board to lend his support.

Lala was inspired by the New England Equitation Finals, founded by Phelps and other New England professionals, whose goal was to boost equitation in New England.

“Some years back, I founded and created the New England Horsemen’s Association Hunt Seat Medal along with some other professionals, and I served as president of the New England Horseman’s Council,” said Phelps. “As a Floridian, I feel it is important to support the Southeast Medal Finals, and we did so wholeheartedly.”

Lala partnered with Classic Company’s veteran show manager, Bob Bell, and created the new show. It was a resounding success and has become a significant contribution to the horse show offerings in the area. To top it off, the Southeast Medal Finals was chosen to host the ASPCA Maclay Regionals.

Meg O'Mara wins Region 3 ASPCA Maclay Regionals. ESI Photography/The Digital Place

September 25, 2012 – It was a full weekend for junior riders as the final four regions concluded their ASPCA Maclay Regionals. The anticipation was tangible as the nation’s top riders competed for the chance to attend the prestigious ASPCA Alfred B. Maclay Finals during the Alltech National Horse Show this fall at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. Michael Hughes captured the first place honors for Region 1, with Lillie Keenan riding to the top of the ranks for Region 2. Meg O’Mara took the championship in the ASPCA Maclay Regionals for Region 3, while Taylor Schmidt rode to the top of the standings for Region 4.

The ASPCA Maclay Horsemanship class has been held since 1933, and it is one of the most prestigious competitions for junior riders in the United States. Its winners are some of the biggest names in the equestrian sport. Previous winners include: William Steinkraus in 1941, Frank Chapot (1948), George Morris (1952), Leslie Burr Howard (1972), and Nicole Shahinian Simpson in 1992. The 2010 ASPCA winner was Hayley Barnhill, and Sarah Milliren took the title during the 2012 Alltech National Horse Show.

Meg O’Mara Finesses the Course to Secure the ASPCA Maclay Regionals at Southeast Medal Finals

Meg O'Mara and Vancouver

Jacksonville, FL – September 23, 2012 – The highly-anticipated third and final day of the first Southeast Medal Finals featured the ASPCA Maclay Region Three Finals. A group of 37 skilled riders determined to master Alan Rheinheimer’s course competed for today’s top prize.

Traveling away from the in gate, the course opened with a bold oxer to oxer line. The track turned to the left and over a vertical on the far short end of the arena. From here the riders were asked to rollback to fence #4, a vertical on the diagonal, followed by two options for fence #5 and fence #6. With a turn to the right to fence #7, an oxer, the acuteness of which was determined by the options chosen, the route continued with a bending line to an oxer/vertical two stride. Then, a turn to the right took the riders over a vertical on the far short end, followed by an rollback to fence #10 and a bending line to a combination − a pair of natural verticals, then another bending line to the left to a single oxer headed toward the in gate. A turn to the right and through the center of the arena on the diagonal took the track to the final fence of the course, an oxer.
