2016 SEMF to Benefit Kids’ Cancer Foundation

2-year-old Kinleigh in Lead Line Class.

James Lala, creator and founder of the Southeast Medal Finals, is proud to announce that the Kids’ Cancer Foundation will be the charitable beneficiary of the 2016 Southeast Medal Finals.

Lala is an advocate of the charity that works as a support system for children battling cancer and their families. The 2016 Southeast Medal Finals will include silent and live auctions to benefit Kids’ Cancer Foundation.

“Kids’ Cancer Foundation is a wonderful organization that provides resources and emotional support for kids with cancer and for their families. I’m very proud that the Southeast Medal Finals will be supporting the organization and families this year,” Lala said. “It’s amazing what they do for those kids and their families.”

Children with cancer or blood disorders typically undergo 2½ to 3½ years of treatment, and five years of follow-up. Chemotherapy treatments, doctor visits and trips to the hospital consume the majority of their time and significantly impact the entire family.

Kids’ Cancer Foundation provides numerous programs, including a pediatric oncology patient care navigator, arts and health programs, tutoring and homework club for patients and siblings, family socials, and more. Under the leadership of founder and Executive Director Michelle O’Boyle, Kids’ Cancer Foundation has contributed upwards of $400,000 in financial assistance to families, given away more than $200,000 in gifts and toys, and most importantly, celebrated more than 50 “end of treatment” parties.

Equestrian donors have made it possible in the past for children under Kids’ Cancer Foundation care to attend horseback riding camps. And the kids have participated in “fun shows” as part of James Lala’s horse shows.

“He has a big heart,” O’Boyle said of Lala. “Something resonated in him seeing these kids. And the kids’ riding programs have been one of the best opportunities for them,” she added.

In addition to the Southeast Medal Finals naming Kids’ Cancer Foundation as its charitable partner, James Lala’s Wellington Quarantine has a long-term program of support for Kids’ Cancer Foundation. Lala is making a $25 donation for each horse whose owner chooses Wellington Quarantine and is inviting the clients to match it. Lala recently delivered the first donation check to Kids’ Cancer Foundation.

Auction items for the Southeast Medal Finals silent and live auctions are now being accepted. Please call 561-906-6668 if you are interested in supporting through an auction contribution or other donation. WTHJA Shows Named as 2016 SEMF Sanctioned Events

The West Tennessee Horse Show Association will continue its affiliation with the Southeast Medal Finals for the 2016 season, with all its shows serving as sanctioned events for the 2016 Medal Finals.

Based in Germantown, Tennessee, just outside of Memphis, the West Tennessee Horse Show Association has promoted excellence in horsemanship, riding, training and competition in the hunter and jumper industry since 1980. Its National (A) and Regional (C) rated USEF/USHJA horse shows attract participants from across the South, Central and Midwestern United States. Horse Show Manager Barney Mallace will be joining the staff of the 2016 Southeast Medal Finals, slated for September 16-18, 2016.

“We’re delighted to have the West Tennessee Horse Show Association with us again this year, and especially pleased that Horse Show Manager Barney Mallace will be working with us,” said James Lala, SEMF founder. “He brings a great deal of knowledge and professionalism and will be a great asset to the Medal Finals.”

Mallace said he believes having the West Tennessee shows as sanctioned events will promote their growth as well as that of the Southeast Medal Finals.

“We’re always looking for new ways to boost entries here, and we believe the affiliation with the Medal Finals will boost entries for both,” Mallace said. “We’re committed to it this year and into the future.”

The West Tennessee Horse Show Association hosts six shows, all of which are held at the Germantown Charity Horse Show Grounds. In addition, the Germantown Charity Horse Show hosted by the Germantown Charity Association, one of the largest multi-breed shows in the country, will be a sanctioned event for the SEMF, Mallace said.

SEMF Announces 2016 Dates

It is with great excitement that the SEMF Management Team announces its 2016 dates. The Southeast Medal Finals will be held September 15-18, 2016. We are also pleased to announce that the SEMF management has added The Southeast Fall Festival, a National rated horse show immediately following the SEMF, on September 21-25, 2016.

SEMF is planning to return to the Jacksonville Equestrian Center for the 5th year in a row. Expect some major changes to the format, schedule and the facility! Week 1 will be Southeast Medal Finals, where top riders and mounts will compete for top honors in their respective Medal, Hunter and Jumper Section. Week 2 will be Southeast Fall Festival, a USEF National and Level 3 Jumper Show. SE Fall Festival will maximize use of the Coliseum for a fantastic indoor prep. Plenty of Professional, Junior and Amateur divisions will be offered. Things exhibitors should look forward to in 2016 at both shows are shorter days, better footing, team competitions and additional prize money. “The decision to return to Jacksonville was a difficult one that was not taken lightly,” said James Lala, the show’s founder. “I researched tons of facilities in the southeast, visited and spoke to facility management and truly weighed all of the options, but the simple fact remains that the indoor at Jacksonville is unlike any other at any facility in the southeast and most closely resembles that at Indoors.” So be on the lookout for plenty of opportunities to show indoors, under the lights, and be sure to add 2016 SEMF & Southeast Fall Festival to your show schedule!

SEMF would like to extend its deepest gratitude to National Horse Show, for allowing it to be the host of the prestigious Maclay Regional Finals for the past 4 years. SEMF would likewise like to extend its deepest gratitude to Bob Bell and Stadium Jumping, for providing excellent management services during that time. It is truly bittersweet to no longer host the Maclay Regional Finals; however, SEMF is excited for the future and new opportunities for growth in the coming years. By moving the SEMF forward a week, it offers Maclay Regional Riders an ideal prep while freeing up the coliseum to offer riders an experience like no other. In addition, the Southeast Fall Festival offers horses and riders a chance to compete in a coliseum before heading to the indoor finals. Exhibitors can unpack, set up and stay at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center for 2 weeks of competition.

The Benefits of Being a SEMF Show in 2016

Southeast Medal Finals, in its 4th year of existence, “has gained popularity and its growth has surpassed my wildest of expectations,” said show creator and manager James Lala. “This past year, we had an incredible 92 competitors in the Phelps Medial Group Southeast Junior Medal Finals, which left me beyond words excited.” One thing is for sure: the staggering growth and participation is a true testament to the need for an event like this. Exhibitors can qualify at any show in the US or Canada and need not be USEF or CEF sanctioned. The criteria for qualification are significantly easier at SEMF Member Events (Sanctioned Shows).

From a managerial standpoint, there are only benefits to being a SEMF Member Event:

  • There is no sanctioning fee to apply to become a member event
  • Riders and trainers are given an obtainable & prestigious finals
  • Our finals are geared towards EVERYONE
  • Helps expand the local & grass roots industry
  • Classes fit easily into a busy schedule
  • All SEMF classes can be combined with other similar classes, or run separately
  • No fee is required to run SEMF classes
  • Increase in your show’s entries
  • Advertising by SEMF including links and logos on the SEMF Website
  • Application is simple and can be done fully online at the SEMF Website

Riders, Trainers & Parents, be sure to ask your favorite show organization, manager or series to become a SEMF Member Event!

Southeast Medal Finals Finish Successfully with Record Number of Competitors

Jacksonville, Florida (September 25, 2015) – From seasoned trainers to young riders making their first trip around the hunter ring, 2015 Southeast Medal Finals competitors filled the Jacksonville Equestrian Center on September 17-20 for their chance to win blue ribbons. The Jacksonville Equestrian Center was proud to host the Southeast Medal Finals for the second year in a row. With a record number of entries this year, the competition offered some riders a way to wrap up the summer show season, while the Jacksonville Equestrian Center’s indoor coliseum arena provided others with excellent preparation for the upcoming indoor National competition in Kentucky. The Southeast Medal Finals included classes for equitation riders, hunters, and jumpers.

“We’ve had a very good week with lots of numbers, and a lot of big classes,” said Philip DeVita, the 2015 Southeast Medal Finals show manager.

Trainer Jane Fennessy of Carriage Hill Farms in Delray Beach, Florida was one of the many contributors to the 300+ entries that the show received this year. Fennessy brought 17 horses and five young riders to the Jacksonville Equestrian Center to compete. As her excited students compiled an impressive collection of ribbons, Fennessy said, “I’ve been working with these girls since they were six or seven years old. I really like bringing them to the Jacksonville Equestrian Center. The coliseum is great.”

Carriage Hill riders Siena Easen, Phoebe Alwine, and Erika Jakobson were thrilled with their first and second places rides throughout the competition. “My favorite part of my ride was the jump-off,” said Jackobson about her winning round in the High Children’s Jumper Finals. “There was one line where we took out a stride and then we made this tight inside turn after, so we lost a lot of time there!”

“Everyone seems to be enjoying the show and pleased with the new improvements we’ve put in at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center,” said Dr. Peggy Fuller, the attending veterinarian at the Southeast Medal Finals and vice president of the Northeast Florida Equestrian Society, which is the management group for the Jacksonville Equestrian Center.

Show manager DeVita agreed that the facility improvements helped make an even better competition this year. “The indoor arena itself is all new footing. That’s been huge,” he said. “Good footing is one of the key ingredients to success.”

Camryn Halley, a young rider who won the LJ Enterprises Pony Medal Finals on the new footing in the 150 x 300 foot indoor coliseum, was all smiles as she made her victory lap on her mother’s horse Calache. Halley was quick to give credit to her equine partner for their win. “Calache is a really good girl,” Halley said. “I love how she’s always willing to do whatever I ask her to do, with a good attitude. She’s game for anything! I’m so proud of her.”

In addition to the Southeast Medal Finals, The Jacksonville Equestrian Center plays host to numerous shows and events for a range of equestrian disciplines. This is great news for veterinarian Dr. Cara Oliver and her daughter Casey, 12, who loves to jump through the hunter ring as much as she loves to barrel race. This year was Casey’s first year at the Southeast Medal Finals, and she rode her pony Flower Girl in the small pony division.

“Casey loves to show. She loves to jump,” said Cara Oliver, of Ocala, Florida. “She thinks that it’s neat that she gets to come to the Jacksonville Equestrian Center and show her hunter ponies and then she also gets to come back in November and barrel race.”

Now that the excitement of the Southeast Medal Finals has ended for another year at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center, it’s time to gear up for upcoming events right around the corner. The facility features an enormous indoor arena, outdoor turf arena, outdoor show rings, and more than 400 permanent stalls. Ample RV hookups and vendor spaces ensure exhibitor comfort and convenience. The Jacksonville Equestrian Center, located at 13611 Normandy Blvd. in Jacksonville, Florida, has amenities to host not only equestrian events, but also recreational, sporting, and community events.
