Aachen (GER), 4 July 2012 – The Swedish team will be pathfinders around Frank Rothenberger’s daunting course as the fifth leg of the FEI Nations Cup 2012 gets underway at the prestigious Soers Arena in Aachen, Germany tomorrow night.

The draw took place this afternoon, and the order-of-go is as follows:  1, Sweden; 2, Switzerland; 3, Germany; 4, France; 5, Belgium; 6, Netherlands; 7, Great Britain; 8, Ireland.

With mounting tension ahead of the London Olympic Games which are now only a few short weeks away, some team managers will be fine-tuning their Olympic decision-making over the next few days, so there is little room for error on the part of riders.

And as the 2012 series moves past the halfway stage, the countries lying at the bottom of the league table are acutely aware of the need for improvement.

KEEN

Ireland is lying last, in eighth place, so Chef d’Equipe, Robert Splaine, is keen to register a good result this time out.  “We were quite good here last year, but we could do with a good score at this stage as we haven’t excelled ourselves so far in this year’s series!” he said.

Ukraine Leads FEI Nations Cup European Promotional League 2012

Lausanne (SUI), 27 June 2012 – The Ukraine galloped to the top of the FEI Nations Cup European Promotional League 2012 leaderboard following victory at the fifth leg in Drammen, Norway on Saturday 23 June.  Denmark had been out in front following the previous round on home turf in Copenhagen last month, but an impressive performance at the Norwegian fixture from Bjorn Nagel, Katharina Offel, Cassio Rivetti and Aleksander Onishchenko, has relegated the Danes to second spot ahead of the last leg at Gijon, Spain in early September.

This was the second Ukrainian success of the 2012 series, following their top placing at Linz-Ebelsberg, Austria in May where the same four riders completed with just six faults to take the honours.  Double-clears from both Rivetti, riding Verdi, and Nagel with Niack de L’Abbaye put them in a position of strength at the Austrian fixture, and they only had to add five faults from Onishchenko and Comte D’Arsouilles in round one, and a single time fault from the anchor partnership of Offel and Vivant in the second round.

Germans Rule in Rotterdam

Rotterdam (NED), 22 June 2012 – With pre-Olympic tension reaching boiling point, Germany grabbed maximum points in the fourth leg of the FEI Nations Cup 2012 series at Rotterdam, The Netherlands today.  But the eventual winners were pushed all the way to the finish line by the super-cool Swedes who piled on the pressure with four clear performances in the second round.

The French, at last, provided Chef d’Equipe Henk Nooren with an encouraging third-place result, while the Irish slotted into fourth ahead of Switzerland in fifth.  The British were hampered by a difficult day for pathfinder, Tim Stockdale, to take sixth, while the Dutch finished a disappointing seventh ahead of Belgium in eighth place.

It was like a pressure-cooker in the Rotterdam ring, with Olympic selection hanging in the balance for so many of the horses and riders.  And as German team-member, Ludger Beerbaum, pointed out, “It was a really exciting competition because until the last rider went in it wasn’t clear who would be the winner!” Olympic hopes were raised and dashed throughout the afternoon, but for German Chef d’Equipe, Otto Becker, there was simply confirmation that he has a wealth of talent to choose from ahead of London 2012.

Rotterdam (NED), 21 June 2012 – The Swiss team will be first to test the track set by Louis Konickx when the fourth leg of the FEI Nations Cup 2012 gets underway at the Kralingsbos in Rotterdam, The Netherlands tomorrow afternoon.  The Dutch course designer is recognised for his innovation and style, and the eight competing nations can expect a strong challenge as the eight-leg series moves to the halfway stage.

The order-of-go for the competition which begins at 16.00 local time is as follows:

1, Switzerland; 2, The Netherlands; 3, France; 4, Great Britain; 5, Germany; 6, Belgium; 7, Sweden; 8, Ireland.

The British hold the record for most wins in the Dutch Nations Cup – 14 in total since it was first held in 1948.  But the Germans are close behind, with 13 victories including their latest success in 2011, and they could well draw level with the British tomorrow afternoon.

Caracas (VEN), 18 June 2012 – Colombia’s Juan Manuel Gallego claimed gold at the 2012 FEI World Jumping Challenge Final in Caracas, Venezuela yesterday.  The silver medal went to Ecuador’s Rodrigo Bermeo Andrade, while Zimbabwe’s Charley Crockart pipped the host nation’s Emanuel Andrade for the bronze.

The event began at the Lagunita Country Club last Wednesday with the opening ceremony followed by a draw for the pool of horses, and Gallego’s first stroke of good fortune came when he was partnered with Carnida Z, who rounded up a superb week by claiming the special award for Best Horse of the tournament.

Competitors from 15 countries – Colombia, Ecuador, Syria, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Algeria, Iran, South Africa, India, Chile, Bermuda, Jamaica, Indonesia, Mauritius and Costa Rica – lined out in the battle for the coveted title.

FIRST STAGED

The FEI World Jumping Challenge Final was first staged in 2001 by PSI, the company created by German champion rider, trainer and businessman Paul Schockemohle who has been instrumental in providing horses for, and developing the skills of, many of today’s top equestrian athletes.

Vakin Roars to Victory at Minsk

Lausanne (SUI), 18 June 2012 – Russian rider Maksim Vakin, 32, riding the 11-year-old Harley Davidson, led from the start to win at Minsk (BLR), the second leg of the FEI World Cup Eventing 2012. Vakin now moves into second place in the series standings behind Germany’s Sandra Auffarth, winner of the inaugural competition at Strzegom (POL).

Last year’s winner Alena Tseliapushkina (BLR), a regular participant in this FEI World Cup Eventing series, finished second and third on Goliaf and Elga, but as her results did not meet the minimum eligibility requirements, the Belarusian did not earn any World Cup points.

Boris Vasilev (RUS) was lying third after Cross Country on Naftenat, but had a less than happy time in the final Jumping phase, picking up 33 faults to drop to fifth. He was also sixth on Osoka, but he too does not earn any FEI World Cup Eventing points for his efforts.

The Jumping phases proved influential: there were five clear Cross Country rounds but none in the Jumping. Six riders were eliminated for three Cross Country refusals, including Tseliapushkina on her most experienced horse, Passat, her ride at the 2008 Olympic Games, and Aliaksandr Faminou (BLR), who finished third on last year’s FEI World Cup Eventing leaderboard.

Michael Jung Thrills Home Crowds with Another Luhmühlen Triumph

Lausanne (SUI), 17 June 2012 – Michael Jung (GER), riding Leopin FST, added yet another accolade to his glittering career when he won the CCI4* at Luhmühlen (GER), the penultimate leg of the HSBC FEI Classics, much to the delight of a loudly cheering home crowd.

Earlier in the day he had won the German national title with Weidezaunprofi’s River of Joy, and his assured performance over the weekend will make him an obvious favourite to win gold at the London Olympic Games in six weeks’ time – the Jumping phase even takes place on Jung’s 30th birthday, July 31.

“It’s very nice to be sitting here,” said Jung. “I have some wonderful horses that are in great form. Leopin was fantastic on the Cross Country and it is nice to know that he can do everything. I just made a little mistake in the Jumping, coming in too fast to the combination, where we had four faults.”

The Jumping phase at Luhmühlen, on an all-weather surface in the revamped main arena, proved influential, with a tight time, and there was some re-arranging of the top 10 placings.

Michael Jung Takes Control at Luhmühlen Again

Lausanne (SUI), 16 June 2012 – Michael Jung (GER) rode a copybook Cross Country round on Leopin FST at Luhmühlen (GER), the penultimate leg of the HSBC FEI Classics, and is now in line for a third major victory at the venue which launched his stellar career.

He won here in 2009, his first attempt at CCI4* level, on La Biosthetique Sam, the horse he is likely to partner at the Olympics, and the pair went on to capture the FEI World Cup Eventing final and the European bronze medal that year, before becoming world champions in 2010 and European champions in 2011 at Luhmühlen.

“I had a little problem at the first water complex when Leopin landed steeply over the boat fence, but apart from that he was really good,” said Jung. “We are more together as a partnership than we used to be. I’ve been riding him across country in a double bridle and that has been much better.”

Lausanne (SUI), 15 June 2012 – Lucinda Fredericks (AUS) produced a brilliant Dressage test on Flying Finish, a newcomer at CCI4* level, to head the field of 44 after the first day at Luhmühlen (GER), penultimate leg of the HSBC FEI Classics.

The Ground Jury of Jennie Loriston-Clarke (GBR), Christina Klingspor (SWE) and Christoph Hess (GER) awarded her the excellent score of 31.8, one of six to come in under the 40 barrier.

Fredericks has a one-penalty lead over the 2009 winner and current world and European champion Michael Jung (GER), best of the home side on CCI4* first-timer Leopin. Andrew Nicholson (NZL), the only rider who can overtake HSBC FEI Classics leader William Fox-Pitt at this stage, is in close contention in third place with Mr Cruise Control.

Andrew Hoy (AUS) on Rutherglen, last year’s winner Andreas Dibowski (GER), on FRH Butts Avedon, and Oliver Townend (GBR), who conjured a best ever CCI4* mark from new ride Armada, a horse that can be explosive in this phase, also scored sub-40 marks.

Top Riders Chase Fox-Pitt’s Target at Luhmühlen

Many of the world’s top riders are heading to Luhmühlen in Germany for the penultimate leg of the HSBC FEI Classics, where they will be trying to reduce the significant lead established by William Fox-Pitt (GBR), winner of Pau last year and Kentucky in April.

Fox-Pitt misses Luhmühlen after a double of wins in Bramham last weekend. The Briton has as a 14-point lead over New Zealander Andrew Nicholson, the only rider that can overhaul Fox-Pitt this weekend before the 2012 series ends in a fiercely contested finale at Burghley (August 30 – September 2).

The other rider who can come close at Luhmühlen is the highly successful American Boyd Martin, who is travelling over from the USA with Remington XXV, the 16-year-old Hanoverian. Martin is currently sixth in the HSBC FEI Classics rankings after a great Rolex Kentucky performance for third place on Otis Barbotiere.
