A Long-awaited Event – Indy Finally Had Her Foal in the Paddock in Broad Daylight!

March 10, 2008 - Finally! The long awaited event arrived. This is my last baby - I am not breeding any more. Mom and baby girl are doing great.  Born at 11:30 am; placenta expelled 12:30; baby nursed at 1 pm and pooped at 1:30 - text book birth. Look at those long legs.... All I could see was legs - legs- legs...

Gen's Independent Delight (Indy) DNA color is:  (EE) (aa)  Sire is Goldust's Royal Chance DNA color is:(e/e), (A/a) (Cr/Cr)  I assume with the DNA calculations I have, Indy has given me a gorgeous Smoky Black girl.

DSCF0031-200.jpgIndy pulled one on me  -- for weeks on end now I have had my clock set to wake me up every 30 minutes to look at the monitor to make sure all was okay. We did a foal predict kit this morning and no color changed. Her milk went from gold last evening to milky white this morning. I expected a birth tonight and dreaded another sleepless night. I put her in a small paddock in front of the barn to get a little leg stretch. She was not out there much more than 10 minutes, she lay down and whamo - began hard labor and began straining like crazy - the legs and nose crowned great, but nothing else happened and she was straining and trying to roll and straining.

DSCF0032-200.jpgI gently gave a little tug downward on the legs and whoosh – out came the baby. Indy gave such a loud sigh of relief.  Vet came on out and checked her over. The straining birth showed in the right eye a little red, but should clear up within a day or two. Other than that she is in perfect

health. I always stay on my toes with Royal's babies he tends to throw very large babies. I am going to truly miss this wonderful event in birthing and being able to witness a miracle with each birth. Is this not a perfect way to start off a Monday???? Now what to name this beauty????

We are having a herd dispersal - too many horses to keep - sigh...
