March 8, 2007 - Three of New York racing’s top trainers; Kiaran McLaughlin, Gary Contessa and John Kimmel, are the latest horsemen to sign up for the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation’s (TRF) Pony-Up Program. The Kentucky Equine Education Project (KEEP) has designated February as its fundraising and membership month. The organization hopes to receive funds or pledges totaling $850,000 during the month as well as renew its current memberships of more than 10,000. Read more>

Jan. 29, 2007 -- Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, who suffered a severe left leg injury in the Preakness Stakes, was euthanized Monday at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine hospital. Already suffering from complications from laminitis, he then developed a deep subsolar abscess on his right hind hoof. Although the veterinary doctors placed pins in the right cannon bone, the concern was that the injury was in a weight-bearing bone; recovery was deemed hopeless. March 19, 2007 - HB 1711, the Illinois bill to ban horse slaughter, is scheduled for a hearing before the Illinois House Executive Committee on Wednesday, March 21st at 8:30 am in room 118 of the Capitol Building. Immediate action is needed in support of this bill, which will ban both the slaughter of horses for human consumption as well as the trade of horse meat in Illinois. Read more>
March 13, 2007 - Habitat for Horses Action Alert - In light of the recent U.S. Fifth Circuit Court Decision upholding current Texas law banning the slaughtering of horses for human consumption, the horse slaughter plants and their supporters have introduced companion bills in the Texas Legislature to legalize horse slaughter in Texas. The bill number in the House of Representatives is HB 2674 and the Senate companion bill is SB 1742. These bills are the horse slaughter plants absolute last chance to keep operating in Texas and they will do everything possible to pass these bills. We must be prepared for an all out fight to kill these bills and make sure that horse slaughter stays banned in Texas. Read more>

HB 2328 (the Animal Cruelty Bill) has been set for hearing before the House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 20, 2007 in Austin. rejection of a petition from two foreign-owned horse slaughterhouses in Texas seeking to remain open, a Texas lawmaker has already introduced a bill to repeal the 1949 state law banning the sale and possession of horse meat for human consumption. Animal welfare groups called H.B.

WASHINGTON (March 7, 2007) – Legislation to outlaw the commercial sale and slaughter of America’s wild horses was passed today out of the House Natural Resources Committee. Rick Silvia Selected as Demo Rider for 2006 Adequan/USDF Symposium - Twenty-two year old, Rick Silvia, of Jacksonville, FL and a well-known competitor on the Southeast dressage circuit, has been selected as a demo rider for the 2006 Adequan/USDF Symposium. The USDF Symposium will be held in conjunction with the Adequan /USDF Convention to be held in Kansas City, Missouri, November 29th –December 3rd. Freehold, NJ – August 19, 2006 – Marc Latsko, who has worked on the equestrian show circuit for the last 12 years, sustained a life threatening injury while unloading shavings at the Monmouth County Horse Show. He has been hospitalized and in critical care for over a week and will remain in the hospital for at least another four days. Unfortunately, Latsko was not carrying health insurance at the time. Hurricane Pony Receives Prosthetic Limb, Helps Kids - Molly, a 15-year-old Appaloosa pony, survived Hurricane Katrina when it hit Louisiana. She was rescued from her pasture near New Orleans after the storm and given a new home with Pony Paradise. However, Molly's storm tragedy didn't end there; a rescued pit bull that had shown no previous aggressive tendencies attacked her and several other ponies, severely damaging her right front leg.
