The Distant Horse

It is amazing what a horse will do for you when you earn its trust, and it is equally amazing what one will do to you when you abuse its trust.

The Distant Horse program is for horses who have been the victim of neglect and abuse by their owners, handlers or trainers who often times are the ones who ‘train horses' thru force & fear. This also includes horses that are the victims of unacceptable training methods for any certain or particular activity or gait, horses learn primarily thru repetition or, doing things over and over again, be it learning to eat at a certain time of day at a spot in the barn or learning to run away from those humans who they have learned by doing things over and over again to them, that they know hurts them or causes discomfort. In most cases horses that are constantly forced to perform or do things that create an atmosphere of contempt will and do, develop habits that are beyond the abilities of many trainers and clinicians to correct who train or work with normal horses. Behavioral Correction is a specialized training aspect and should never be attempted by anyone who does not have the appropriate training to perform it. Now with that being said, there will always be those who think they know how but remember this, an aggressive horse can rear up before you have time to pull the slack out of a halter regardless if you have been training for 1000 years and strike you into the dirt in about 3 seconds and looking up at a 13foot tall equine isn't natural for anyone!

All horse owners want the best for their horses but sometimes they get caught up in a fad or hype of the activity they are involved with and find themselves and their horses in situations that are dangerous and unpredictable. Regardless of what you think you know about horses, either from reading books or watching videos on them, there is a side of the horse that most horse owners never see and for the ones who do witness this side of them, they never forget it. Horses are social animals classified as prey animals meaning they have a fight or flight instinct that helps them survive. When pushed or stressed due to training thru force or just being cornered in a stall even, any horse is capable of attacking and more so, horses that are forced to constantly perform stemming from abusive training or handling to include neglect, are the horses that cause the most problems and damage.

This is no fault of their own in the majority of instances, humans are the number 1 cause of horse related behavioral issues and while most are minor annoyances such as the horse walking off while the rider is stepping into the saddle or the horse who has to be bribed with treats and feed just to load onto a trailer, the major problems manifest as aggressive horses or horses that become unmanageable under saddle. Most problems begin to develop while the horse is young and allowed to be handled and or trained by those who do not know or understand how to properly develop a prey animal and work with it's natural instincts. Most trainers approach the young horse thru manipulation of the physical horse and continue on in this manner without ever training the mind of the horse. Any human who thinks they know all there is to know about horses and training them, hasn't trained very many!

If you own a horse that you believe qualifies for this type of specialized training, give us a call but be aware that we will not tell you that it will only take xx number of days as this is the answer you will get from those trainers who place unrealistic timelines on producing anything of value for your horse and you. Time and patience is the key to all horse training and sometimes you, the owner will need to learn either with your horse or thru positive based instruction. Results aren't gained overnight, they are developed over time.
